I saw something a lot like this at the beach once - still a fairly transcendent memory

The amazing thing is they never bump into each other. In contrast, the murder of crows in my backyard - the members seem to be tangling with each other over food.

mildcat, in my head, you now sound just like Kripke from The Big Bang Theory. I'm sure you're just as smart as him, but much, much nicer.

if you timed it right, you'd be able to see a smaller version of this over the cathedral in Birmingham city centre, when I was training to be an auditor. people looked on them as a pest - and now they're not there any more, not because the city council figured out how to discourage them. They're just not there. you probably couldn't get funding to figure out why, either. Not as sexy as penguins. Can't help thinking we're much more like starlings than penguins, though...

Helen, we just spent 15 minutes watching a murmuration of starlings over the Tiber River from our hotel room. Absolutely fascinating and mesmerizing. As I was watching it, I remembered your post. I would not have know what it was called if it wasn't for you. Thank you.

Collective nouns are fun and not much used. I expected Snowy to weigh in more on this topic. We need a collective noun for a group of Freecell players.

That's an easy one. It's a "consternation" of Freecell players.

A rather salient description of the said type of interplay was given by Capt. Larsen, of Sea-Wolf fame. Of course it was nicely bilious, just like that fabulous antagonist.

Crows are one of the most intelligent animals, they're tool makers, up there with apes. I love starlings but here in the US they are frowned on because they're European, non-native birds here. I saw this clip on TV, mesmerized by murmuration of starlings. (spell-check is baffled)

Hey firenze, re: the "we" in "we just spent 15 minutes watching..." I usually get annoyed with my mother after 15 minutes but you seem to really enjoy your mother's company, good for you. Did you take her for a boat ride on the Tiber? Your mother's a lucky gal.

He said something to me about taking her on a boat ride halfway across the Tiber. (Or was it the Mediterranean?) But she wouldn't tell him where she hid the beer stash.

Judging by the length of this and some other threads, may it should be a confabulation of Freecell players. But for those who post to the P&R board the term argument might be more apt.

In recognition of the seeming contradiction of the notion of a competition centered around a game played exclusively by oneself, perhaps this: a solitaire of freecell players.

I like it! Much better than mine. Considering the obscure nature of Freecell, we could take soliloquy one step further: A Strange Interlude of Freecell Players. (Eugene O'Neill reference, given a tweak-of-the-nose by Groucho Marx in "Animal Crackers." We'd probably better stick with soliloquy.)

I'd call it a collaboration, since they have the same root and yours made me think of mine. Soliloquy does have a nice ring to it, tyvm. "Obsesson" is good too.

That's *mildly* cool and all, that someone would actually do that, but why? I'm just curious who would have the thought "I think I'm gonna make me a Bernado". Since that exists, there must be all sorts of Bernie- animals and Bernie- physical phenomena, like "Bernie-hail", or "Bernie-rays". Unfortunately, I can't quickly come up with a word for "Berniemurmuration". Nothing remotely like that seems to roll off the tongue. [And while I think it's obvious that this is apolitical, feel free to delete this, Denny, if you disagree.] (No Bernies were disparaged in the making of this post.)
