I had the pleasure of seeing this gentleman in concert last night. He's aged a bit, but when he plays his Christmas song, the crowd still sings, and most of them had not been born when Robert wrote it.

I mostly post now to bump up this thread, altho I, or somebody, should have done so a few days ago, I guess. But while I'm here.................. (Only the first half is Christmas-themed.) And while this isn't what I'd call great music, I think 40 years on it's obscure - but I actually heard it on the radio yesterday.

from Wikipedia: ".....[Casablancas] also recorded "I Wish It Was Christmas Today", a festive song based on a Saturday Night Live skit made popular by Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan and Tracy Morgan. Casablancas performed the song live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on December 21, 2009, together with The Roots, Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon." And of course the one james posted is from Christmas 2000. Without going back and looking, I think that's the same version I posted in this thread in 2014 (now unavailable from that link). I **think** they did it a least five times, but am far from sure - and that's not counting the 2009 time noted above - which wasn't on SNL. Update before posting.................see link below with those 5(+) versions. At 7:53 Sanz says to Kermit "....my Christmas song", for what that's worth.

Casablancas is a prolific writer, and he seldom releases covers. I spent about 10 minutes trying to find credit for this song anywhere and couldn't. So I gave up and included a hedge in my post. In my searching, I found one more Casablancas version (as part of the Voidz) and a total of about 5 SNL versions. I am actually quite happy to see solid attribution for this song. ( btw: I settled on the conclusion that Casablancas probably wrote it when I found some blogger who claimed that Casablancas recorded the version I posted in 2000 but never released it. That is clearly nonsense)

This *may* not qualify as obscure, but I bet many here aren't familiar with it. While only somewhat Christmas-related, it sure seems to fit this point in time. Not to mention it's quite superb.

I guess it's not obscure in any way, but didn't wanna open a new thread for it: For the last couple of days this Christmas song kept looping in my head, without me knowing its name, the words or who performed it. Only knew it was an African-American female singer. Attempt to find it with Shazam failed miserably. Then I remembered there was a "ding-a-ling" in the background, and a few google searches later, found it. I love the Ronettes, and the music video is just as adorable as the song itself.

Heard this song earlier this evening - I think for the first time - but it was the Commander Cody version. This one, altho more countrified, is decent, with Marty Stuart - and some quality pedal steel and fiddle licks - is moderately interesting.

Not exactly, but I guess partly. Have never been much of a fan, although I don't dislike them. Had just heard it on the radio, so hadn't seen it written, and so just made a mental note with that spelling, to look it up. I was in severe sleep deprivation, too. But thanks for finally asking, now that another, more important musical news item has occurred. On another side of that coin............I was astonished you didn't know she was black or mixed-race. I didn't think otherwise, even as a kid. And since you brought up spelling..........as I suspect you know now............it's "Spector", as in Phil. S. :)

Well if you could spell it, you would see it at youtube. And to me it's unbelievable you didn't know the spelling after like 30 years of phish. Astonishing really.

User: TNmountainman
Message:
Well......ok. Of course I knew how to spell it, historically, but I didn't track it down from the spelling of the name of the band. I went from the song title, and notice on the video I posted, that "Phish" is not there. Nowhere. It was 4 AM Christmas morning. I was tired from baking Santa's cookies, and worn out from continually checking for reindeer. I didn't spend 3 minutes on it, I don't guess. Don't even think I finished listening to the whole cut. Just enough to add the mild profanity warning. Spent more time on the preceding one, trying to find a good Commander Cody version. Then came across the Kinks one "by accident". .shrug

This wasn't about the video you posted, which you said was not by fish, but the fish one you heard on the radio, you couldn't find at youtube. Because you forgot the spelling.

User: TNmountainman
Message:
Well, like I said, partly. I didn't "forget" the spelling. I didn't think or try to think of it. Wasn't even remotely an "issue". In fact, the more I think about it.....................the more it seems like less of a senior moment. From "what I've heard" about them............aren't they when you try to remember something and can't? This was definitely not a case of that. And..........not that it matters...........but I don't think I've ever searched for, or played intentionally, a Phish song. Why does it matter so much to you? And really............as famous as Phil Spector and Ronnie were, with all the various MAJOR MAJOR publicity..............HOW could you forget how to spell his and Ronnie's last name?? Astonishing, really. But I somehow didn't feel the need to bring that up earlier. Curious that.
