Followed by, the Rolling Stones. To me, this is a rather intense performance, and rather amazing to see how fully-formed they seem to be already in 1964. Supposedly, they were very sorry to have to follow Brown, and also supposedly, Brown inspired Mick's dancing antics, kicks, style, etc. Not hard to see that here. Also, some nice early lead solos by Richards. It's not hard to believe that these guys just completely found their calling early on.

Ok, here's the whole thing. Ever seen Chuck Berry morph into Gerry & The Pacemakers? And back? And then back again? Did they borrow the dancers from "Shindig!"? I haven't watched the entire movie, but a lot of it. Some really great stuff. What a time capsule from 50 years ago. Amazing to realize that only 3 years later, just up the coast, was the Monterrey Pop Festival, a 'big bang' of great import. By the way, I saw Jan & Dean (the hosts of this) at an outdoor show in Toronto in '84, and they were extremely impressive. Enjoy.

Yeppers. Violent Femmes' music has been in at least two commercials: HP laptop and Wendy's. Violent Femmes still can get a crowd going -- even a young crowd, if it's the right crowd: A warehouse concert venue full of late teens and early twenty somethings listening to some grunge knockoff band. The bassist hits the opening riff of Blister in the Sun, and the crowd perfectly responds with the required hand claps. On the other hand, Penn Jillette gives the same tease before one of his shows in Las Vegas, and the audience sits frozen with the exception of my son, who does response alone, and later receives a Tweet of gratitude.

Re: "in (of course) much better health".... I struggled with how to word that. That concert had been discussed on this board previously, especially the Queen set, and Bowie seemed so vibrant in that "Heroes" clip, I was trying to point out the contrast, without being maudlin, pseudo-snarky, or anything along either of those lines. And that's where the "Life is short....." came in, too. Although I was never the world's biggest fan, I always admired his creativity and lack of fear in his art. We're losing so many of those artists we grew up with, as each one leaves us, it seems (for me at least) to somehow help pave that pathway to the other side, and so this, along with far too many funerals in my personal life the last couple of years, put me in sort of a nostalgic mood. I certainly wasn't "playing" it, or trying to be clever. (Although I was aware that the way I phrased that was awkward, or quirky, or whatever. None of those things were my intent, but I didn't want to belabor each word at 3 AM.) (And I'm in no way the slightest bit offended by your observation/characterization.)

Well, it's been awhile since we've delved into some serious blues.... Somebody named "RochestersEarl" has been posting some exceedingly excellent long (as in whole show), high-quality videos of many of the masters on gootube. I could post a dozen or more, but I'll limit it, at least for the moment, to 3 giants, John Lee, Wolf, and Lightnin'. There's much, much more relatively recent stuff from them, so follow your noses if you're so inclined. I'll start with this. Although ain't nuthin' wrong with Memphis boy Furry Lewis, I post this mostly for the stark, spartan, unadulterated setting and style of John Lee here. 1978. Powerful stuff. John Lee would be 99 right now.

Although he's not playing guitar here, his stage presence is just mesmerizing. Approximately equal in interest is the searing licks of Hubert Sumlin (with Sunnyland Slim on piano). I know most of you won't have the patience to watch and listen to the whole thing, but spend some time moving ahead through the whole thing just to see some of his antics. He talks about how he developed the "howlin'" (from Jimmie Rogers yodeling! Who knew?!) This is from 1970. Wolf would be 106 now. Since his heyday was before my time, I never got the experience of seeing him in person, sadly.

Back on page 2 of this thread (Fri Jul 4 05:17:50 2014), I posted a version of this song filmed in Boston. So here now is another really, really good version of the same song, with similarly high sound quality, but on a considerably(?) earlier tour. And considerably different - which is interesting and worthy of "discuss amongst yourselves". I once again hesitate to put this into an "old music" thread, but it's shockingly 29 years since this performance. The Edge and Mullen could hardly sound better together in such a booming yet tight groove. This is what rock 'n' roll is supposed to be. Recommend on full screen. And don't spare the volume.

That song was especially meaningful. Tx, TN for a great clip.

This song doesn't fit any of the current music threads, and I am not starting another (when this might be the only post in that thread). This song fits the not-so-broad genre of "what would it be like if a guy resembling Randy Newman decided to make a tribute song to Bruce Springsteen about living in Minnesota?" This isn't exactly a cover; it's more of an homage. And it isn't new, because it came out 11 years ago. Anyway, The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based indie band that has been putting out music for a decade or so. This song crawled through the airwaves last night, and I stopped everything to give it a good listen. I decided that it kinda fits the structure and sorta fits the sound of a couple of Bruce's more upbeat rock songs (e.g., Rosalita), but it's more muted. And the lyrics are fascinating. I'll put these guys on my list of bands to see if they happen to be playing in the area.
