Trolling? Uh, yeah. Quite familiar with the term, and I used it quite properly in context. This thread has degraded to its usual state when a certain troll arrives. I'll leave it to those who seem to be enjoying it most.

NO, YOU DIDN'T USE IT CORRECTLY. YOU BLATANTLY ABUSED THE TERM. But, in attempt to restore this discussion to its proper context, I'll add another sport oddity, and hope that nobody attempts to use it as an attempt to verbally bludgeon another poster. Does anyone remember the game where the Vikings set a record of seven field goals in regulation? Tied the score 21-21, then went on to become the first team in NFL history to win an overtime game with a safety.

):o A "sockpuppet" is an alternate username. Often, posters will "masquerade" as a different user, with a different name. Most message boards prohibit this. This message board does not. A few years ago, it became a common practice here, with people trying to figure out which sockpuppets belonged to which primary user. We even had fun guessing who was who. MOST OF THE TIME, it was done in fun, but sometimes not. Eventually, Denny started a thread to sort it all out, and some posters unmasked themselves. I exposed all my sockpuppets, because I'd had my fun, so most experienced members should know that The_Longhorn, Colt_McCoy, St._Louis_Rams, The_Pope, and a few others not used in this thread, are all me. (Los_Angeles_Rams was added yesterday.) I have no clue who Sam_Bradford is, but (s)he is also Sarah_Palin. The owner of that nick has never unmasked himself, or if he did, I missed it. ):o All of my nicks, except for Longhorn_iPhone (started because the game is slower on an iPhone, and I didn't want my playing time stats affected) and Los_Angeles_Rams can be found in the all-time 8x3 list, «mostly» on page one.

That was helpful, The_Longhorn. Here's a complete definition from Wikipedia: "A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. The term, a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock, originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an Internet community who spoke to, or about, themselves while pretending to be another person. The term now includes other misleading uses of online identities, such as those created to praise, defend or support a person or organization, to manipulate public opinion, or to circumvent a suspension or ban from a website. A significant difference between the use of a pseudonym and the creation of a sockpuppet is that the sockpuppet poses as an independent third-party unaffiliated with the puppeteer. Many online communities attempt to block sockpuppets." I would say your cast of identities would not qualify as sockpuppets because you often reveal them: no deception intended. Here's the definition of an internet troll: "In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion, often for the troll's amusement." The definition's inclusion of intent makes the application of "troll" speculative. Only you know your intent, but many people subscribe to the famous Supreme Court decision: I know a troll when I see one. It hardly seems worthy of debate.

I fully agree. No sense living in the past, But, sometimes the mind wanders. Is it getting warm in here? ======== My apologies for the digression. Is a safety similar to a "safe word"? Something one player says to another when things are going too far?

Well, they were really good in college, too. I think for both of them, they came into an almost tailor-made situation for them. Although not a fan of Jerry Jones (to put it mildly; OR the Cowboys), he got it right with both of them. Loved Prescott in his role as leader of the Miss. St. Bulldogs in the top-heavy SEC West. Admired, Elliott, too, although he played for the dreaded Buckeyes. Tangents: 1. Jones was *awfully* friendly and close with the teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa way back when. 2. Rather extraordinary the number of top coaches who were on Frank Broyles's staff for that (National Champion) team Jones was on in Fayetteville.

I noticed, in checking on this thread, that the Pitt-Cuse game was already mentioned. One item I found interesting was the 20 TD's with 0 FG's. (Zero!) I suspect that a lot of the points (47 in the fourth quarter alone) came from defenses beat to death. I didn't see either water boy out there playing D, but they may have slipped him a uniform...

Two quite remarkable happenings in the NBA last night: 1. James Harden: 53 pts.; 16 boards; 17 assists. One just doesn't see 17 assists in games all that often. Read the article for how impressive that stat line is. For one thing, his 53 tied only Wilt Chamberlain for points scored while getting a triple double. 2. Russell Westbrook also had a triple double............in the first half. Which gives him a quite ridiculous 16 triple doubles already this season.

NBA teams leading by at least 19 points going into the fourth quarter had won their games the last 662 times. Until last night, when Memphis came back on - of all teams - the Warriors, to win in overtime. Golden State didn't have a field goal in the fourth quarter until only 3:14 remained. Now that's an el foldo.

The Pirates, and MLB, just had an interesting/historic week, although I am pretty sure it went unnoticed in most of the country. They brought up the first Eastern European--from Lithuania, a pitcher with some real promise. And then they sent him back down to bring up the first African, from South Africa, because they needed infield help. A damn good fielder, still working on his bat. In any case, two players, first time in MLB, from too different huge areas where baseball is not exactly a prominent sport. (You may remember that baseball contracts with the Pirates was the prize for winners of a fastball contract in India, the topic of many stories and a movie.) One guy is still in organized American baseball.

Just a few of the superlatives of tonight's game 2: The Warriors' 14th consecutive playoff win. To be 14-0 this year. Crazy. And a record. LeBron's 8th career triple double in the NBA finals, tying him with Magic for the most. The next most player has, I think, 2. The Warriors turned it over only 4 times in game 1, an absurd number. Tonight, they turn it over a more mortal 20 - so they lose, right? Not hardly; they still win by 19. Two beastly performances in a row, and yet last year they were also up 2-0, and 3-1. But that was without KD. It's a rather astonishing thing of beauty to watch the Warriors when they're rollin' right now.

True dat - and their 49 pts. in that quarter set a record for an NBA finals game. Not to mention an NBA finals record of 86 in a half (previous record: 81 by the '76ers vs. Lakers in '82); AND....an all-time NBA postseason half (previous record 83 by the Mavs vs. the Kings in '03). And remember, the Cavs only scored 91 in the whole first GAME. *AND* an NBA finals record of 24 3-pointers. Oh, and LeBron got yet another triple double, giving him sole possession of that record (9) for career postseason. The Warriors quest for a 16-0 postseason run is over, but 15-0 is a record - and this writer thinks that will be hard to beat (duh). Shocking stat: Cleveland hit more than 100 more 3-pointers during the regular season than Golden St. Who knew?

The pitcher can strike out as many as he wants in an inning depending on how many thumbs the catcher has. BTW, when there is a strikeout, the catcher is credited with the out.
