Midnight Oil's "Beds are Burning" popped up on the radio the other day and I thought that it might be my favorite rock-n-roll song from Australia. But, there's been lots of great bands from Oz. That can't be what most people think. I'm not even sure it's my favorite Australian RNR song because I'm sure there's a bunch of bands from Oz most people in the states tink are from the U.K.. But, that got me pondering what about other countries? What is the top rock and roll song from each nation? My list likely has: USA: Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen Scotland, Sultans of Swing, Dire Straights Germany, Ode to Joy, Beethoven England, Go to the Mirror, The Who Ireland, Pride, U2 Australia, Beds are Burning, Midnight Oil Mexico, La Bamba, Ritchie Valens Canada, My My, Hey Hey, Neil Young

Depending on your taste, Oz seems to be out-performing some other nations based on population. It's hard to find many bands from Canada and easy from Australia and I think that Canada has half again as many people. Maybe they are just too nice in Canada for R&R? Arcade Fire seems to be the only really big Canadian band. On the flip side, I went along for 20 years or so thinking that the best selling hard rock album ever was from an American band only to final find out that AC/DC is from down under.

As a Canadian I'd like to mention the Guess Who, Neil Young, April Wine, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Rush, Triumph, Steppenwolf, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bryan Adams, Chilliwack, The Five man Electrical Band, A Foot in Cold Water, Prism, Crowbar, Harlequin, Streetheart, Max Webster, Loverboy, Trooper, Rough Trade, Teenage Head, Tom Cochrane with and without Red Rider, Corey Hart, Alannah Myles, Platinum Blonde, Helix, The Box, Michel Pagliaro, Roch Voisine, Blue Rodeo, Colin James, Jeff Healy (although the last 2 would fall under the Blues category, really, I suppose), Annihilator, The Tea Party, Matthew Good Band, Our Lady Peace, Moist, Alannis Morissette, I Mother Earth, Avril Lavigne, Sam Roberts (from my home town), Nickleback, The Tragically Hip and of course, William Shatner.

Although not Canadian, I was surprised to read Kaos's assertion that "it's hard to find many bands from Canada", and almost posted at that time about Guess Who, Rush, BTO, etc., etc. But I would certainly agree that Oz "out-proportions" most countries with their output. And while "Beds are Burning" is a great song, I personally would have gone with Men at Work's "Down Under" or any number of AC/DC choices. Those items mentioned, I'm not gonna take time to answer Kaos's full challenge, due to time constraints, I guess. But surely, any number of Who songs other than "Go To the Mirror" would rate higher, such as about 4 or 5 from "Who's Next", and "My Generation". But just my opinion, of course.

Wasn't sure where to put this. I almost put it in the "Old Music" thread, where we have posted several other passings, but it seems more appropriate here, as AC/DC was prominent towards the (previous) end of this thread. Although brother Angus (rightfully) gets more of the credit for his gunslinging, Malcolm was no slouch, and the band wouldn't have made it without both of them (imo).

Best British (London) band pretending to be a Japanese electro-pop band/j-pop: Kero Kero Bonito This group popped up in another music thread as being one of the most annoying groups ever. Shockingly, at all the gigantic festivals (e.g., Coachella), they pack their venues with adoring fans.

Well, in my once-a-year-or-so quest to see what's 'new', I checked out Kero Kero Bonito. I watched 6 or 7 of their videos, and preferred the one you linked ("Break"), and maybe "Trampoline" after that. I feel quite sure there's less than a 1% chance I'd have encountered them without you posting the link above. Certainly not my cup of tea, but moderately listenable. Could never listen to a whole album of their music, but their videos are somewhat inventive and interesting. I won't say they're a one-trick idea, but they kinda are. Yet they make the most of that one trick. What is it with all the synthesizer these days? Didn't we go thru that phase in the disco era?

Denny's MOTF about Jim Breuer channeling Bon Scott led me to this effort from 2009 at River Plate in Buenos Aires. It's closing drags on quite too long, but there's lots of serious shredding and noodling. Don't give up on it too soon - try to watch it all the way through. Or.....skip over some of the early vocals, and the dragging stuff in the middle-ish parts, but there's some great stuff scattered all throughout. I'm pretty sure this is what Angus Young was born to do. Oh, what Orville Gibson hath wrought......

Ick. No personal offense, but re-read the title of the thread, please. No way on earth can that surpass any of the top, oh, 200 of Neil Young's songs, just for one example. Not likely it can surpass any, or many, of the *bottom* 200. And that's just using Neil for a simple proxy for all the great Canadian songwriters.

Dire Straits were English, not Scots. On the loose definition of "Rock n Roll" being applied here, The Undertones' "Teenage kicks" is the best Irish contender.

For Irish, I gotta go with Van the Man. "Beside You" as any song but it's not very rock, so maybe St. Dominic's Preview or Mystic Eyes for garagey rock.
