Yep, Detectorists! I thought it was hilarious. Peep Show is probably one of my all time faves for British Comedy. Still Game is based in Scotland and focuses on 2 pensioners and their daily life, kind of old, but I thought it was funny too. I'm a netflix fiend, have been for many years, way before netflix was a household name, and way before the streaming option was even available. I remember having to explain to people at work what the heck netflix was!

ix and calico kid, Believe me: you MUST watch "Doc Martin" starting with Episode 1 of Series 1. You can skip episodes after the first series, but not before. Doc Martin has real staying power (I believe its seventh series was broadcast in 2015). "W1A" hasn't stood the same test of time, but I haven't laughed out loud though its two seasons as I have since "Fawlty Towers." Do check them both out.

FairMay, I've watched quite a bit of Doc Martin, at least through Series 5, I have been meaning to catch up, but have been kind of going through more of the Brit Drama, and cop shows. Doc Martin is quite good. I tried to watch W1A, but can't remember what I thought, perhaps I will go back and try again on your recommendation.

We really enjoyed the show Shetland (we were watching that on Prime, not sure if it's on other services). It's a relatively slower-paced crime drama set on the Shetland Islands north of Scottland. So the accents are a bit heavy and we had to watch with captions. But very pleasant characters and long, tangly kinda plots as opposed to the "DNA evidence quick confession and we're outta here" shows. Anything come to mind like that? Denny

If you like Shetland, you might like The Bridge (mostly in Danish and Swedish so captions needed). Not sure where it might be streaming these days. It's a season long investigation. If you prefer shorter investigations, Dicte (first 2 seasons ). Also in Danish. :)

Btw, wrt to that show Shetland... just for grins I looked at real estate on the Shetland Islands. Looks like for the price of a modest house in Scottsdale you can get a seafront villa. Now it's funny all the real estate photos show blue skies and my understanding is the Shetlands usually are pretty gray and overcast.

If you want to laugh, try Schitts' Creek. Canadian series with Daniel Levy and Catherine O'Hara. I started it about a year ago and didn't like the first two episodes. I have family and friends that told me to give it a try and I did and got hooked on it. It is on Netflix, except for the final season. That is only on Amazon Prime and they charge to watch. I am frugal and patient so I will wait until it comes on Nerflix.

errr.... yes, kinda sorta. It's not like HBO as a premium cable channel. But, yes, you need a subscription and you can watch it on your tv if you have the proper gear. Netflix was a DVD rental subscription service ONLY, and that is still available. It then added streaming capabilities, usually as part of something else or straight to your computer. Then, it created its own app for smartphones and tablets, and started expanding the viewing options. Smart devices (like DVRs, AppleTV, Chromecast, etc. and now smart televisions) have the Netflix app available, either pre-installed or ready for download. Each subscription allows 4 different users at one time and no limit on the devices being used. You can now download content for offline viewing (e.g., on an airplane).

Since I don't allow "apps" on my phone, and don't have (or want to have) a google or Apple account for my tv, would that exclude me from using it? Just curious.

Ok. Assuming you have a computer of some sort, you can go to Netflix.com and watch their content on your comp. Or, run a cable (HDMI or whatever) from your computer to your tv. An alternative (that's gonna cost between $40 and $200, depending on your champagne taste) is to get a FireStick, ChromeCast, Roku, AppleTV (multiple generations available) that work nicely (I had a chromecast a million years ago). I'm assuming you have some form on Internet in your Stone Aged home -- you'll need that for all of them. Each requires a subscription. Google and Apple haters can eliminate ChromeCast and AppleTV from the list; Amazon has the FireStick. Roku is its own thing (as far as I know).

Ok, thanks. That's about what I thought. I watch so little TV that I likely will not go down that road. I do have a computer, but it and TV are on different levels, so running a cable between them is not feasible. I suppose there's a wifi way of doing it. It just intrigues me that 'everyone', including many on this board, just talk about it like it's nothing. And to you all maybe it is........ I'm just an unfrozen caveman freecell player. Your world frightens and confuses me.

If you have WiFi, you're good to go, even with the cheaper options. I started with ChromeCast and loved it ... but there's that anti-Google gene in your DNA. One of my kids uses Roku and loves it -- it's the only signal into their tv. Another is a major fan of YouTube TV -- he casts it directly from his phone to his smart tv. (Many DVRs are set up to receive signals cast from a smart phone.) I am now totally sold on the quality of the later generations of AppleTV .... but, yeah. Read some reviews, find one that meets all your criteria, and go all in. Installation will be simple.
