I awoke to some sad news this morning. My friend and collaborator on Netcell tourament ratings, known around here as Slowpoker, died on January 10, 2017 after a series of strokes. I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Kay, and daughter, Serena. Thank you for reaching out to his Netcell friends to let us know, Kay. I had the pleasure of getting to know SP starting with the "Ratings Crew" collaboration that also included WRAC and ElGuapo. He wasn't the fastest netceller around - which he poked fun at with his name choice - but he was sure one of the smartest that I ever knew. Did you know that he was literally a brain surgeon? I'd known him for a while before learning that, but by then it didn't surprise me at all. Besides being smart, he was also a voice of calm and reason, but with a creative bent. When ratings controversies would be raging on the board, he had a way of staying above the fray that I envied and couldn't match. He described brain surgeries as "moon walks" and shared some of his improvisational piano playing with us. (Have a listen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRb51RC3Gj0 .) He enjoyed waxing philosophical and made it a point to appreciate the uniqueness of the collaboration we stumbled into. He even tried to get a new crew project going a few times but our respective lives and priorities couldn't line up to take on a new collaboration. I feel regret today that I didn't try harder to stay in more frequent touch, but I'm glad to have known him as a friend and will miss him. Laffman

Thank you Laffman for those beautiful words. Although I did not get to know him as well as you guys did, I always appreciated his calm warm humor. His nick said he was slow, but of course that's a relative term: he was faster than me and plenty of other people. I wish we could have figured out how to keep the ratings going because it did very much enhance the community of this site, which has gone down a lot since they stopped. I don't think SlowPoker had posted anything here for five years or so. Or you either, for that matter. Sigh.

Thanks, Laffman, for your well-deserved tribute to SlowPoker. He was not only a brilliant thinker, but a true friend. People like that don't come around often, and it is very sad to see them go.

It's been a bit difficult to post about SlowPoker since we shared the same first name; the same age; many of the same obsessions (starting with netcell); and we both spent a great deal of time exchanging notes as part of the Ratings Committee that Laffman initiated at Hotel Netcell many moons ago. My heart goes out to WifeOfBruceMayes. If Bruce in real life was anything like the Bruce we knew though his exchanges here, we lost a good man too soon.

wow. A warm farewell to SP. I, too am thankful for his contributions to the ratings team, and all of his philosophical musings. Not surprised he was a brain surgeon, either! Hugs and condolences to the family.

Very beautiful music and more-so in the context of his departure. And now to him will be revealed the magnificence of the brain upon which he built his career. Just try to imagine the music he will now play. Take care SP; enter into your rest. To his family; I am extremely sorry for your loss; and this is a tremendous loss. May your souls be comforted by your memories and his music.

Thinking through these ratings conundrums again has me really missing my friend. SlowPoker was publicly the least vocal part of the Ratings Crew, but his contribution was what anchored us. His enthusiasm for the project and his confidence in the work we did was infectious, but he was also wise and open and thoughtful. We were "internet friends," but he shared personal and poignant things about his life, caring for his father through cancer and his mom, who in her final days wanted him to sit so she could brush his hair and feel like a mom again. I was lucky to know him and think of him often.
