Subject: 12-sum streak rankings

This is a list of all players who have current streaks in a least 4 of the 9 12-sum variants. The score is calculated as the product of log-to-the-base-2 (streakLen+1) for the streak columns, and a 'penalty' multiplier of 0.5 for the blank columns. (The actual log value is, of course, zero but that would be a dull scoreboard with everyone at zero unless you have all 9 variants covered.) I consider log( ) an even better adjustment function than sqrt( ), which is what free_at_last used in his multiplier ratings, since it rewards even more the spreading of efforts among as many streaks as possible.

Instead of penalty multiplier how about this? product of log-to-the-base-2 (streakLen+2) (empty columns make x1) So for example now we would have: G_G_G: 1024705.74 joegray: 66212.42 ... ListeningtoGod: 58.85

But... the intent here is to promote an overall 12sum leadership, and so the penalties for completely skipping some of the variants thereof are intentional. I did try a log (streak plus 1.5) last week when I wrote the vba code, maybe I'll move back to that. I will run it again tonight around midnight and see if it has caught some people's interest. If folks are interested it's easy enough to run it often. I'm thinking about how the middle variants - 8x4, 9x3, 10x2 - are intrinsically easier than the outer ones and how to reflect that in the metric. Ideas?

I see by looking at the 4x8 all-time list that you have a streak there some three years old. Maybe if one day you feel lucky... (well, do ya punk?) (I can sure understand not wanting to mess with it though.)

joeygray, yes, if midnight is the cutoff time, my 10x2 would have been cut off last night at that time. I keep a log in an excel spreadsheet so I know what is coming up but it sometimes seems to be a day off. Re 4x8, I stopped playing it because my win % was so low - 41.46%, and somewhere I found that the winnable % should only be 38%. I'll have a shot at it sometime if you're giving prize money! Generally, I play a total of 31 variants that have a win % of at least 70% but that require some thought, that have some chance of getting in the leading group without playing 10 hours a day for the next 20 years! That's all the winnables, all the sum 12's and 11's except 4x7 and 4x8, plus some 6x, 5x and 4x. Frankly, that's too many, it's hard to keep up. Big time waster.

Once a week? I have given some thought to penalty multipliers. multiplying by 0.5 is equal to log2(sqrt(2)) that's about log2(1.414). product of log-to-the-base-2 (streakLen+1.5) is worth thinking about. so now an empty column makes 0.585 multiplier. and winning one game makes 1,322 multiplier instead of 1.585. How about that?

is the current formula product of log₂(streakLen+1) for streak columns and .5 for empty ones? (not sure if the subscript of 2 will print out correctly, i just had to try it though) thanks for doing this joey, i think its going to be very popular!

Again, I don't think there should be any penalty for an empty column. Let there be a reward for even a streak of 1 but no penalty for zero's. Not playing a variant, or being a day or two late keeping a streak current shouldn't take away from good streaks in other variants. I don't see any logic to that.

Yep. We agreed, and changed it to log(streaklen+2) as of April 10th, which means any zero columns get a 1 multiplier. Dang these old threads! Lemme post this to the two ongoing threads which my autoposter is updating, which I guess I should have done in the first place.

In English instead of math, this formula rewards breadth over depth. Having a streak of (3 in each of the 9) "12 sum" games will give you roughly the same score as having (4 streaks of 100 and 5 streaks of 0). Not running into an unwinnable 4x8 game is one key to a a higher score.
