It's hard to believe (at least for me) that it has been fifty years since the release of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. Rolling Stone has it listed as the best rock-n-roll Album of all time. PBS has just aired an excellent special on the making of the album. With a more visceral than technical appreciation of rock-n-roll, I prefer Revolver and Rubber Soul over Sgt. Pepper but after watching the PBS special, it would be hard for me to argue against the choice of Rolling Stone. Ms. Bombay, who has a much deeper appreciation for composition than I do, sides with Rolling Stone. I know we have a number of music aficionados out there (maybe it's that music <=> math connection), is Rolling Stone right?

Seems like we discussed this once before - maybe not specifically this album only, but in the context of "best album" or something like that. But a quick search doesn't find the one I remember. (I did find the one you started about "Best Rock n' Roll Songs Ever", from 2011, which is somewhat relevant, I guess, but might muddy the water here. I can link it if anyone wants to see it.) Anyway......that's a good question. It's most certainly right up there, and one would be hard pressed to name another higher. Certainly (no offense), either Sgt. Pepper or the White Album are the ones most would rate best of the Beatles (with "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" close behind (although not as much for me)) - and that eliminates 70-80+% of the competition right there. That said, for consideration, the "Woodstock" movie soundtrack album, and "Hair - original Broadway cast" have to also be way high. Curiously, as the "Woodstock" movie is actually more impressive visually with the music, should that disqualify the album? (No; but made you think!) As I'm sure you all know, "Pet Sounds" is ranked as the greatest by several reviewers. I personally disagree, but it's got to be among the top 3 of most 'influential', and in some important ways instigated/spawned/prompted Sgt. Pepper. Obviously it comes down, in large part, to personal preference, altho should it really? What about "Are You Experienced?" "Live at Fillmore East"? "Tommy"? "Babylon by Bus"? "Highway 61 Revisited" or "Blonde on Blonde"? One could certainly make a strong case for either of those Dylan masterpieces. Strong comp, but ultimately........it may very well be Sgt. Pepper. It just covers about *all* the bases, has stood the test of time (as if these others haven't), was so ridiculously revolutionary, and just sort of hit the whole world with a body punch that still reverberates these 50 years on.

Rubber Soul has always been my favorite, imho. But, all albums by The Beatles are way up there on my list of favs, r&r or otherwise. My #1 album, on my list of all genere, is still The Wall, next would be Brother's In Arms.

A couple of years ago, I had Adele, Lady Gaga, Train, Jason Mraz and the like turned up fairly loud on a little ghetto blaster as I was cleaning the kitchen. My senior-in-high-school daughter came in and asked me to turn it down a few notches for she couldn't hear her own music in her bedroom, down the hall, with the door closed. I asked her what she was listening to and she replied "The Beatles"
