Subject: Denny: a request if feasible

It has been pointed out to me that ones current streak time, that is, the last time you played a variant (and won it?) as displayed on all the current lists, is being updated (to 'now') as a result of playing (and winning?) that variant in a tournament. This is not correct and skews the current lists. If it is feasible to do fix this easily, can you do so? Thanks in advance for looking into it.

>In the interest of fair play, I'd have to side with joeygray's comments above - that streak play >and tournament play should not interact in the (fresh time) statistics but the world we live in >is Denny's world and they do. Everyone who plays tournaments regularly likely knows this but >I can see where players who rarely or never play tournaments would not know this and be >peeved. I really do think it is an oversight on Denny's part, not a deliberate decision, to update the variant time from tournament games. After all, the primary purpose of that column is to age streaks off the current list if they are not current. He already has code that doesn't update wins and losses if it's a tournament game, why not move the variant time updating to that same check. That's why I ask: because it seems likely to me it would be an easy change and it only makes sense. I said 'primary purpose' above but, at least in my view, it's the ONLY purpose of that column. Denny, is there another purpose?

I guess that Denny had no interest in fixing this. Or did he fix it without telling us he did? I dunno. I'll test it, and if it's not fixed I'll go ahead and "fix" my metric to discount any streak that doesn't change for 4 or more straight updates. Starting January 1.

joeygray, Maybe there is a better way to detect it with an extra field. You can fetch how many games have been played by a contestant. You can store it yourself and compare it to the current count. That way you can deal with the probability that you see the same number but maybe a streak has been lost and made again in between.

Very good! Your idea, I think, turns my "fix" into a true fix. I feel much better about it now.

Not (after a short night's sleep) that it's any easier to implement. Oh, well; whine whine whine.

Ok. Beginning with the 11am EST Dec 18th run, my software will begin capturing the number of games played per variant per player, and will record the current date and time along with it. For each subsequent run, if the games-played has increased, the new date will be recorded, otherwise the existing date is maintained. Then, for each streak, only those with recorded dates less than 14 days old will be counted, all others are set to 0 (as if the player did not appear on the current list, which he shouldn't have - Denny's bug.) It will be on the run of Jan 1, 2018 that this will possibly have an effect for the first time. Am considering printing log messages if it occurs but I might not feel like it :) Of course you can still 'game' me for one extra run, as you can establish a streak before a run and then play a tournament/custom/replay after the next run so as to appear one extra time than you should - that will keep you via Denny bug on the current list past when he should age you off but before I will. But it'll age off on my next run, 3.5 days later. Thanks, Hop, for that observation. It did make things a bit easier after all. If anybody thinks this approach is no good, explain it here before the 18th. I'm happy to be shown the error of my ways!
