Subject: Name the Variant

Message:A "new variant" would either be rediculously difficult, or VERY easy (like 6x11, or 7x10, or 8x9), imo.
I don't think we need any new variants.
You could, if you really want to, have some more "winnable" variants. Like, maybe, 12x0, 11x0, 10x0, 9x1,...

Message:Then it wouldn't be "new", it would be "promote one of the existing variants", imo.

Message:I think he means rotating to a new "promotion". He just "promoted" the 7x4 with his MOTF about "Slurpees". More specific would be "promote another variant". I think he wants a new cute name for one that doesn't already have one. Just my opinion, of course.
11x0 - "Shady Baker's Dozen"?
4x8 - "Dry Wall"? (I know, that's terrible and not a real suggestion; just making an example.)

Message:The dry wall idea makes me think of 5x7 "portraits." But then 5x7 is probably too difficult a variant to promote. They're about 85% winnable it would seem from the all time list. If 5x7 is a portrait, mayby 7x5 is "landscape"? The 7x5 is a variant that doesn't get played enough in my opinion--almost as easy as 8x4 but often requires more interesting solutions. If we could go back in time to the beginning of freecell I think I would have liked to see 7x5 be the "standard" variant.

Message:Dry Wall? Well, okay:
He could establish an entire construction-based subset:
4x8 -- Dry Wall
4x4 -- Deck Post
4x10 -- Roofing Sheet
8x8 -- Floor Tile
10x2 -- Rafters
8x2 -- Joists
7x9 -- Walk-in Closet
6x8 -- Door Frame
4x4 -- Bathroom Ceramic
8x3 -- Wall Block

I almost went down that same road as you, Buzz, buy not that far.
Completely agree, ElGuapo. And I think that's a great suggestion all around, name included.

Message:LOL indeed. I almost used that word! And I tried out several others, but settled on "shady", knowing it's not really the ideal one.

Message:Several years ago, we went thru this same discussion, and mrbob's 10x1 seemed to have the most support. I can't remember the specifics of name proposals, but I do believe "mrbob" was always a key ingredient of the suggestions. That 'movement' was player-generated as opposed to this one, so it (obviously) never became accepted canon.

Message:Yeah, I vaguely remember the mrbob discussion. I'd like to pick something accessible like the 8x4, not a no-brainer like the 9x5 and 10x6 which, so far as I can tell, are just strangely popular mouse clicking exercises.
Do you think 10x1 are winnable but us normal folks? I'll try some tonight. I was kinda liking the 9x3 but I'll check out 7x5 too.

Message:The 7x5 is basically right in between Slurpee and Standard in terms of difficulty, and unlike Slurpee you are very unlikely to hit an unwinnable game. Here's a list of variants and their all-time level 10 win percentage, if the idea is to pick something a little more challenging than 8x4.
8x4 91.14%
6x8 89.91%
10x2 86.01%
11x1 83.58%
9x3 77.01%
6x7 67.75%
7x5 62.11%
10x1 42.95%
7x4 32.79%
