Hey, guys! After the first day, the awesome and mighty PITTSBURGH PIRATES were tied with the lead of their division! AND tied with the BEST winning percentage in the National League! After their second game, they now reside in the middle, with a 50% winning average. After their third game.... :( (Oh, well. We are expecting much better performance in the 22nd Century.)

Interesting, Ann and deadwing. If the Pirates end the season at .500, it will almost be a rousing success. If the Cards end at .500, it would be seen by many in St. Looey as a major disappointment. Expectations. Sigh.

The Tigers won their first two homegames. yay. Real men play baseball while all the other men play football because they are so brain damaged from playing football that they no longer can recall what real men do. (which is play baseball...just in case you couldn't keep up.) hee-hee. There's nothing more inspiring than a triple play or a home run on what would have been the last pitch of losing game that turns the game into a winning one. man, I love spring!

I love baseball as a spectator, which is why I'm really disappointed in the Pirates' management and ownership over the past couple decades. You get to sit and anticipate the next pitch and the next play. And then as each play unfolds, you get to ponder and discuss it. It's almost like there are many scores of individual little games. The fielders position themselves in anticipation of every pitch. The pitcher ("bowler") has to decide on many pitches whether to throw the ball suddenly to first base instead. The runner tries to sneak out into the longest possible "lead" off the baser while minimizing the chance of being "picked off." The ball is hit, and the runners have to decide if it might be caught, or if they should take off running full throttle. Then they have to decide whether to try an extra base. How good is the fielder's arm? Will he hit the cutoff man or try to throw it all the way to third base from right field or to home? OOps, the ball was dropped. Should the runner try for another base? Or, in a close game, how about a suicide squeeze play? Should the pitcher try to eat away at the corners of the strike zone, or challenge the batter with his hardest ball? Or instead make it look like a fast ball and instead throw a "change-up" where the pitch comes in slower than that, with the batter swinging too early? Then, you have a "run-down" where a base runner has been caught off base. How will he (and the fielders) handle that? Will he be tagged out, or make it safely to a base? And if there are other runners on base, what should they do? And, chatting with other fans, and even arguing the merits of players and plays... Wow. (I hope major league baseball comes back to Pittsburgh soon.) But in the meantime, there is minor league Washington Wild Things, high school baseball, high school and summer league girls softball, youth ball... (Sigh)

Had an interesting thought Snowguy, When it comes to games, you prefer the pastural, easy going, slow developing sport of Baseball, I on the other hand prefer the aggressive, violent, bone-crushing sport of Football. When it comes to everyday life, we are exactly opposite, I believe in negotiation, discussion, and time to think things through. You, on the other hand, prefer immediate action, control, and gun violence. Maybe during the next seventh inning stretch, you can sit back and ponder just why we feel this way. Just a thought.

BTW, I grew up in Philadelphia Eagles Territory, I hate the Eagles and although I am not a fan of Pittsburgh, I have always held a deep respect for the Organization, the Team, and most its fans. There is a rich tradition in Pittsburgh and I accredit that too the hard working Middle class citizenry. The Eagles come from a working class city as well, but somehow the fans are different. Maybe I'm being unfair here because I've spent more time on the Eastern end of Pennsylvania, but for the most part, in my humble opinion, Pittsburgh fans outclass Eagles fans. I , too, am a Fan of a Team with deep traditional roots and class. Go Packers!!!

My question is this: which division is the strongest? This question will be best answered after the World Series has been played; then, choose the strongest division from those in which the World Series champ is not a member. If necessary, we can take a poll in October.
