No, was not there, unfortunately. I was only trying to resist *posting* it, because I just didn't want to foist my own tastes onto others, unless, as in this case, it's so compelling. No, I would be hopeless in trying to resist listening to it - as I've done so approximately 20 times in the last month, if not more......

This sent me on a long exploration on youtube watching all these old videos of Blind Faith and then Hendrix, not sure why the segue. Well All Right is a fave from BF. Derek and the Dominos double album is an amazing 4 sides of great song writing and guitar playing.

True that, but I actually like the live album better. Certainly it's high points are higher, those notably being "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad" and "Let it Rain".... I do not own the Fillmore East album (the Derek & the Dominoes one, not the Allman Brothers one, which of course everybody has), so I can't address a comparison there, although there is a 14+ min version of "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad" on that one.....even though it was recorded over the same two nights in 1970 as the original one linked below. Very understandable and worthy segue, seems to me..... As an aside, does the Dominoes live album outweigh the Allmans "Live at Fillmore East" album? Why of course not. Very little can.

Btw TN, thanks for the video. I've seen both Eric Clapton a few times and the Allman Bros. too, before Trucks. At one of the Clapton concerts the regular drummer was sick so Phil Collins sat in for him; best concert I have *ever* been to bar none.

By all accounts, the Trucks Tedschi Band rocked Asheville pretty hard last night. I wish I could have afforded the steep-ish ticket prices. I know they're doing a couple of CA shows later this month, and then a tour with the Black Crowes later on in the summer....

IF the Trucks Tedschi Band are ever within 100 mi. of Indy I would consider selling my first born...again. He is my present favorite guitar player, next to Clapton and my son.

Here they come: Aug 13 2013 Indianapolis, IN Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn @ White River Tickets already on sale, I think. However, they will be sharing the bill with the Black Crowes and The London Souls. Personally, I'd *much* rather see a full show with just them. You could do that June 18 in Kansas City, but that's quite a bit more than 100 miles. I think upon further reflection, I should have just gone ahead and jumped over to Asheville for that show. I first saw Derek when he was either 13 or 14, can't remember which.

Tedeschi is a Floridian. So jealous that she performs with great frequency in your neighborhood. I downloaded their 2011 album, Revelator, and listened to it on the plane ride home. Fantastic. It reminded me a lot of Bonnie Raitt's music back in the late 70s/early 80s when she was covering a lot of Little Feat. Full, rich vocals, wonderful bluesy backup. They have a live album out (2013?) that is a double disk -- too big for the slooooooow internet I had available. I'll snag that this evening and give it a listen.

Yeah, "Revelator" is solid. Don't own it, but have heard most of it on NPR stations. Have also heard great chunks of the live album and it's nice as well. I haven't seen Tedeschi in many years (she used to play around here a lot, too), but I think she's gotten better with time. And I think her collaboration with Derek may yet be building to it's sweetest spot. I personally prefer older Bonnie, but maybe that's a chocolate/vanilla thing. And I almost hate to say this, but I think she and Derek could use more hooks in their renditions. No question the playing by all parties is sublime, and I heartily agree that there's a strong Little Feat feel. But to me, the grooves aren't as deep as they could be. That's part of why I think they're still on their way to finding their highest calling. Here's a rather syrupy promo for the "Revelator" album. In a followup post, I'll link a rather nice live cut.

Well, Derek and Susan have been strutting their stuff 'round here again. They played a very small place in Boone a few days before Thanksgiving. A cousin and some of my best friends went, but I didn't know about it in time. They said it was great. Duh. And then the annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam just concluded in Asheville (although I don't think Derek and Susan were at it this year, but I'm not sure). One of my best friends in the world hung out with Greg Allman just a bit, and had dinner with him (sort of). Everybody said all 3 nights there were great, too. Lots of recent Derek/Susan stuff on youtube, of which I post a couple here. (Sorry, I know it's not Christmas music.) Hotnurse, how did you like the show in Indy??

...And this is pretty interesting, if a bit disjointed; great audio and video quality from Royal Albert Hall. I recommend making it full-screen. And then Derek and Susan have since done another show in October at the same venue, with some of those tunes on youtube, which you all can find yourselves, if'n you're interested enough. Susan really cuts loose on a couple of those. (Hint: "The Sky is Crying"). Good stuff...

Just came across this "by accident", as these youtube things often happen. I show this mostly for historical interest. This says he was 13 in 1993. Earlier in this thread, I noted that I had first seen him at age 13 or 14. Well, I saw him in either '91 or '92, so he must have been either 11 or 12 at that time. In this clip, one can see that he has more than technique; he's already got quite a bit of the "feel" - the intuitive sense of timing, emotion, and nuance that some hot guitarists never figure out. There are other clips I've seen tonight at age 13 with him actually playing with the ABB, hanging with the big dogs (Dickey (who is now 71 as of this writing) and Warren).

I'm not going, although I could have. I hear tickets are being sold/traded for ~$300. Yikes. hotnurse - will check on that link and post separately.

The video quality isn't all that good, and you might want to jump to about 3:30 or so to begin watching. It's mostly for historical context. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Iq1xw8-PtA

Had a hard time deciding which thread to stick this in, or if at all. It's "old music", but with a new kid on the Southern Rock block: Marcus King. He's got his own band (which I have not seen), but I post this in this thread as it's sort of derivative in multiple ways to the heritage of Trucks and Warren Haynes. First here's some background on the dude: https://www.washingtonpost.com/express/wp/2016/09/29/meet-marcus-king-the-20-year-old-guitar-phenom-who-jams-with-warren-haynes-and-derek-trucks/ And below, see him jam with Widespread Panic at the Wanee festival down in Live Oak, Florida just this past weekend. (And WOW, what a line-up they had this year - including Leftover Salmon doing "the music of Neil Young".) I think he's only there for the first 16:30 or so, and it's nothing revolutionary (and the Allmans already did that revolution WAY back when), but it's nice. Will be interesting to see how the youngster evolves.

Didn't know whether to put this into this thread, or the "old music" thread. It could fit both places. Worth reading - discusses Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen, the old Allmans, etc. If it looks too much for you to wade through, I'd recommend starting at the "Carrying the Torch" segment then.

Niiice. I think I slightly prefer the one I opened this thread with, but love both. Thanks, 'skirts. Traveling thru the history of this thread opens a lot of memory doors. That one of Derek when he was just 13 is simply amazing. On the sad end of things............this is the first time I've watched, or listened to, any Allmans since Greg went away - and I think since Butch went away. Further.....in my Dec. 16, 2013 post above, I mention "one of my best friends in the world" hanging out with Greg a bit before the Christmas Jam in Asheville. Well, he quite suddenly passed away, too, 3 months ago - shortly before Greg. Sigh...........

While we're at it............ Discuss amongst yourselves; "compare and contrast"; etc: The solos on this version vs. the original (from say, the Fillmore). On this one, Derek II takes Dickey's first solo, deftly slipping on his slide at 4:25, then they lengthen the second part so that Derek I (Eric), and then Warren each take Duane's part. I've always loved Greg's 'feel' on the B-3 on this song. In your "compare and contrast" essays, of particular interest are 1) Derek II's technique, 'noodling', and slide vs. Dickie's straight-up searing Gibson; and 2) the difference in Derek I's Strat vs. Duane's Gibson. Obviously there are no losers here. I'm reminded that once Duane said (in reference to Dickey), "I'm the famous guitar player, but he's the good one." Obvious modesty, but just shows what he thought. (Many don't know that some of the most famous ABB guitar solos are Dickey's, and some are, of course, dual. (And no, I'm not trying to say Dickey was better than Duane.) I provide this version from a Fillmore show in Sept., 1970 - a few months before THE (three) Fillmore shows of the album fame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22MRGWnPPIU Not the best sound or video quality, but good enough for comparison. That band had more under the hood than even the best muscle cars of that era. Crazy power. ---------------------------- (BTW Outskirts, thanks again for the version of this thread's title that you posted Aug. 2. With repeated listenings.....it holds it's own with that first one I started this with - or close enough.)
