Subject: really different covers

Sorry, I have to disagree with your assessment; however, can you be more specific about what your issue is with the previous versions presented or what is it about your version that you feel makes it that much superior? The original idea of this thread is to present the versions of the same tune that are the most different.

For my money, no one could possibly sing "Over The Rainbow" better than Judy Garland - it's almost perfection. I'm surprised no one has mentioned any remake of one of the most covered artists of all time - Bob Dylan. Especially since you could make a strong case for the following as the epitome of rock-n-roll music. I think Rolling Stone magazine picked the wrong Dylan song asnumber one on their list.

The thing is, the Dylan version is really, really good. But, Hendrix saw an opening to do something a bit different and definitely jumped through it. Having Hendrix on guitar replacing Dylan on harmonica works for me. But, it likely doesn't fit into the "Really Different Covers" theme like the UB40 version of "Red, Red Wine". FWIW, my favorite Dylan doing Dylan song is Hurricane. Can't imaging anyone doing a better job on that track.

I am really afraid of what the reaction to this one is going to be. The only claim I make for it is that it is very, very different the BD's original.

Well, it's about as different from the original as you can get, I'll grant you that. Comedy? Satire? Were they really serious? Just don't know. However, it is interesting to note the shots with the character that looks like the prototype of the GEICO caveman, that Shatner's Boston Law character is not that different from the Star Trek Days, and that all of them seem to spend a lot of time clutching their throats. All in all, I'm voting for comedic spoof.

The song below has been covered by numerous artists (most notably by 10,000 Maniacs). But, the first release of the song falls into that dubious category of "Not quite a cover". The original author couldn't quite see the song making it onto his album-in-progress so he gave it to a fellow rock-n-roller who made it her own and it ended up being her most recognized hit. Since the original version was never released, it's hard to call it a cover.

Listening again to the Humming House clip from above (June 6, 2014), I thought I had also at least mentioned the other one from that session that I think is "killer". Kinda thought I posted it back then. Sure stands the test of time (imo). One of the very few bands that I could have seen multiple times, but somehow passed on. Knew too late how good they are. On tour all around the country right now; maybe I'll get another chance sometime.

Mildly embarrassing correction. I *did* see Humming House, at a festival, here - in 2014 - on that very night I posted their first video (June 6, 2014). Which is why I found that video -- I was researching them before seeing them. And....I was scattered around that night, and trying to multi-task with family and friends, so....I kinda have an excuse, but obviously I should have remembered it better. I'm sure nobody here cares, but I just want the record to be accurate. My bad.

From the "Is this really necessary?" department: Dr. Demento released his 20th Anniversary Album celebrating his long career in radio, consisting entirely of playing novelty songs on his syndicated program. That was in 1991. My how time flies. Dr. D gave us Weird Al, so it's all good. As a reminder that he's still got a pulse, he announced the release of a Demento-styled cover album: novelty acts covering punk songs and punk groups covering novelty songs. Contributing artists include the Misfits, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts, "Weird Al" Yankovich, the B-52s, and William Shatner. Shatner probably considers himself a punk artist, but I'm thinking Dr. D has him filling a different role. The clickable link is to Shatner's version of The Cramps' "Garbageman" (original: https://youtu.be/0N2-jV189Zs) http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/joan-jett-weird-al-tapped-for-new-dr-demento-box-set-w511278

Although these guys are/were *somewhat* a novelty act, they're actually very competent/excellent players (when they want to be - as witnessed by two of them being Bernie Leadon and Russell Smith). I don't think they're "together" anymore, but apparently were quite a draw at some of the festivals several years back. Obviously (I hope), their name was a play on "Run DMC", which was big at the time. For those few who dig this, there are several more similar ones on gootube. Their live shows were quite a hoot with great music - or so I heard.

Didn't see *that* coming. Seemed like that cried out for about 6 more minutes, but I guess they made their point. I think it loses almost all of it's ferocity, but it just goes to show once again (which is part of the point of this thread, after all) that 'interpretations' of the same song, landscape, etc., make life a little more interesting. Another thing I didn't see coming was when I changed it to full screen -- first time ever that just that action brought up an ad with the full screen. gootube just can't get enough, can they? google, who's motto once was "do no evil", has become an extremely evil organization - imo, of course. Tangent: reports are that the recent two nights of shows (Tedeschi/Trucks) in Asheville were as splendid as would be expected.

The path that led me to this song was a bit long and tortuous, but thumbnail sketch: Dr. Demento and John Cafiero were being interviewed by Yahoo news about their new album, "Covered in Punk", where punk bands cover novelty songs and novelty bands cover punk songs. Dr. D is the novelty end of this, and Cafiero (punk producing legend) is the punk half. Cafiero was rambling on about how he stumbled upon the idea and teamed with Dr. D for the project when he mentioned Klaus Beyer, as if everyone in the universe knows who Klaus Beyer is. Apparently, Beyer is a German punk icon whose lifelong goal was to cover the entire Beatles catalog in German. He had two major hurdles: he cannot sing, and he has no musical talent. Thus, a punk legend was born. I give you Klaus Beyer "singing" Eleanor Rigby (in German).

I had the extreme pleasure of watching Richie Havens perform that cover live in a very small venue in Denver in about 1973. No idea if he used the same musicians, but the arrangement was identical (the same arrangement he used for the single, which made it to #16 on Billboard's Hot 100. Great selection, TN, but the bar had been set pretty low. (Beyer did a cover of the song, but I won't be posting that link.)

Not as different as some, but definitely different. I ticked another item off my live music bucket list and saw Madeleine Peyroux in concert. Small venue, great seats. She played one of my favorite songs, and one of my favorite songs by her. The original was Bob Dylan's from "Blood on the Tracks." I can't find an online version of the studio recording, so you'll have to play it on Spotify or whatever. (There are live versions out there but .... Dylan has a magical way of slaughtering his own songs.)
