My trip to Indy. Part II. Record Store Day. On Saturday (now a few weeks ago), we went to Record Store Day at Luna Music, a couple miles north of downtown Indy. The place was packed with hipsters, aging hippies, and everything in between. The weather was fantastic -- sunny and cool. We had about an hour to browse their vinyl (new and used) before Mike Adams was scheduled to perform live in the parking lot behind the store. My son, who is well connected and quite the player in the Indy music community, spent the entire time talking with just about everyone in the store. I met a record label owner, a ton of local musicians, and (a big highlight for me) I was able to meet and talk briefly with "Dodge" of My Old Kentucky Blog. MYOKB is one of the top music blogs in the country and, as such, was tapped to have a two-hour weekly show on Sirius-XMU (satellite radio's indie music channel). Dodge does that show every week, and I've been an avid listener for years. MYOKB also has their fingers in a big fraction of the live music that rolls though Indy through MYOKB Presents, including the Sufjan Stevens show that night. Dodge was a bit distracted playing dad to his two lovely daughters, but he was kind enough to chat for a minute or two. After buying some ancient music (a $2 used Judy Collins lp), some new music (a Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings 7"), and a t-shirt, it was time to head to the parking lot for Mike Adams's show. Mike is a big dude, about 6'4", who loves to perform. He plays a tiny electronic keyboard and was backed up by a drummer, bass, guitar, and another keyboard player. He is a local indie hero and a bit of a regional sensation. I own one of his cassettes (that I cannot play), and a bunch of his music in digital format. Clearly, the crowd of about 150 had his music, too, because half of them were singing with every song. One college kid in the audience never missed a note and even had some of Mike's dance moves; I was later told this kid wants to start a Mike Adams tribute band, no doubt both flattering and puzzling to Adams. It was an excellent set that left the audience very happy and buying more of his music. (Pitchfork seems to love Mike Adams; you can find a number of articles about him there. Click below to listen to "I'm Worried.") We slowly made our way out of the parking lot, back in the store to find a couple more albums for my kid, and back to the car. It was time for dinner and on to the Sufjan show -- subject for Part III.

I bought a compilation of Indie and Indy artists (all are Indie, only some are Indy) and was listening to bits and pieces. I bought it to support a cause (see the link below to the compilation), so I was not expecting much, but I found myself drawn in by the great songs by big names: Kishi Bashi, Serengeti, of Montreal, and Son Lux to name a few. There are a couple of sleepers that I just love. The first was a really good live cover by Deerhoof of Canned Heat's "Going Up the Country" that sounds a lot like the live version from the Woodstock album. I cannot find a live version of any quality -- they mic the guitars but not the vocals(???). This one isn't bad: https://youtu.be/j4lEtGCJRvs?t=52s The next song is really nice. It's about woman wanting to get back together with an estranged lover and the obstacles involved. It's called "Unzip Your Skin" by Strange Cat. A group that's been around for a while (since 2011) is Unknown Mortal Orchestra. They are a band out of Oregon by way of New Zealand and generate a lot of buzz with each album. Their newest release is Multi-Love, and is a bit of a quiet collection. The title track is very nice (https://youtu.be/bEtDVy55shI?list=PL7sTTVmRCc-MihxM8TVS-kewwJ7IB-zCd) but I prefer the more derivative, "The World Is Crowded". Link below.

A group I heard yesterday for the first time is sosi. I have no information on them at all. (There is a music project in Minnesota called Sisters of Sound Initiative -- SOSI -- but I have no idea what the connection might be, if any). Anyway, this one is a stress-relieving, ambient piece. The lead vocals are nicely woven into the piece. Other songs at their bandcamp page are similar in approach. Hollyvinyl Gable put together a video for the song: https://youtu.be/hP6VZb0CRn4

Caught me some more Parker Millsap a few nights ago. Posted a pic. I'll spare you all the one of us together.... He and band were as tight as last year. Maybe looks slightly less like Leonardo DiCaprio than he did a year ago, when the resemblance was quite remarkable. And just such a nice, humble guy. All of 22 now. I convinced several other peeps to also check him out, too, and like me, were astonished that someone so young could write such songs, and perform them with such nuance and inflection that normally would only come with great experience and seasoning. One observer friend of mine, with perhaps as many (or more) musical experiences under his belt as I possess, quipped "It's like seeing Elvis in 1955". I do think *that's* an exaggeration, but you get the picture..... (And not that he's similar to Elvis; more that he exudes that kind of originality.) If he weren't so earnest, sincere, nice, etc., one could have the thought that now someone *else* has been "down to the (Hwy. 61) crossroads". His compositions are just that preternatural. Eerie, sez I....

So much excellent new music floating around this summer! Bully is a band getting a lot of splash these days. Alicia Bognanno is the lead singer and adds a rough edge to the gritty music. Their new album is "Feels Like", and just about every song is showing up in important places -- all my favorite music blogs and the standard review sites (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone). Rolling Stone did what all old people do (me, too) by comparing Bully to a slew of old faves like Chastity Belt, Colleen Green, Courtney Love. meh. Bully has their own sound; let's not overanalyze. The link below allows you to stream each song on the album individually or stream the entire album if you have a Spotify account. If you have to listen to just two songs, try "I Remember" and "Too Tough."

The Parrots are a group from Madrid, Spain. They are described as Garage Punk, but that's not an apt description. The recordings are raw, the vocal loose, and the arrangements simple. It's a great sound.

I heard this song a couple of months ago, identified it with Shazam, and just sat on it. I was busy, other music came along, and I didn't hear it again. But, I stumbled over it in my Notes to Self, and here we go... Rhye is an R&B/Dream Pop group with a really low key sound. The members are Robin Hannibal and Michael Milosh (Dane and Canandian, respectively). They've been together for about 5 years, but have only one album to their credit, but it's a good one. "Woman" is an album that would be perfect for times when your brain was too busy to be yanked and tugged. "Open" and "3 Days" are outstanding cuts. I have linked to a live version of 3 Days, and you can find their music all over the interwebs.

This song grabbed me from the first chord. The lyrics and the music (and the title) drew me in. Click the link below. I'm including the lyrics (rare for me) ====================== I'm digoxin from the foxglove plant The last remaining VX from Anniston I'm NaCN and I'm DDT Tap into your spine I am a chemistry It's a gas, a sarin for high tea A C4H10FO2P puts you on your knees A sulfur dichloride with ethylene I say it again: I am a chemistry She doesn't need my help poisoning the well beneath the rue leaves She only needs my help pleasuring herself beneath the rue leaves My mama told me not to fool with oleander And never handle the deadly quaker buttons again I am chemistry (When you least expect it) I am chemistry (That is when you get it) I am chemistry ====================== The online lyrics give the third line as "I'm an ACN and DDT", but that makes no sense. With my first listen, I heard "I'm NaCN..." which would be logical. Chemicals abbreviated ACN don't fit the context of the rest of the music; NaCN pellets were used in US gas chambers. Which brings me to a question: How does the "rue" reference fit into this song? I have a guess, but I'm interested in hearing from those who might have a different perspective. (For the really adventurous, here's the music video. Be forewarned, it ain't rated G: https://youtu.be/7XzqCUbiPc4)

Just learned of a tour that goes on most of July and August this year that some of you may be interested in: "Wheels of Soul". Tedeschi-Trucks Band *with* Los Lobos and North Mississippi All-Stars. Although I like them, I'm not a giant fan of Los Lobos, BUT, I *am* a giant fan of the Dickinson Brothers and the All-Stars (note: Duwayne Burnside, son of R.L., is no longer playing with them). Looks like most or all of the shows are festivals or amphitheater-type things, so that makes it a bit harder to fully immerse oneself (in IMO), but that's quite a line-up. I highly recommend the All-Stars if you ever get a chance to catch them. Like much good music, live is better than whatever's available on youtube, but in their case, it's even more true than usual. 'Course it helps if one is into the North Mississippi hill country style of blues, but that *should* be a given...

I was listening to a Regina Spektor concert (rebroadcast), and between songs she made a comment that everyone should be mindful of the importance of voting because "I come from a place where that isn't possible." I was busy with other things, so it was simply an eyebrow raise followed by carrying on. But then she started singing in Russian, so I stopped what I was doing to dig in a bit. She was born in Russia and moved to the US during Perestroika. Interersting. You may be familiar with her theme song from Orange is the New Black, "You've Got Time." Here's a somewhat enigmatic song of hers, "Sailor Song." The lyrics are PG-13, so be warned.

If you had kids or ever turned on a Top 40 station in the decade of the 2000s, you heard The Strokes. This was the collaboration of Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond. They were very splashy among the teens/20-somethings with marginal crossover into the indie world. The influence of The Strokes was undeniable for a lot of groups that followed them (like The Fratellis). Daft Punk is an odd group that does weird electronic distortions and performs in space helmets. Basically, I can't tolerate more than about 30 seconds of their songs. For whatever reason, lately I have been hearing a little-played collaboration of Casablancas and Daft Punk called "Instant Crush." It has the electronic production influence of Daft Punk the far superior song writing and singing of Casablancas. It's not bad. It's an acquired taste.

Two for the price of one. (continued in the next post) Some weeks prior to the release of "I, Tonya," the biopic of Tonya Harding, Sufjan Stephens released "Tonya Harding", a tribute to Harding that was originally slated to be part of the movie but later dropped. The song is bittersweet and haunting, a classic Stephens song.

Ear worms can be inexplicable but sometimes make their way around. Every time that "Apocalypse" by Cigarettes After Sex shows up on my radio/playlist, I crank up the volume. This dream pop/shoegaze band from El Paso formed in 2008 at UTEP, later moving to Brooklyn, languishing in obscurity until having a bit of a breakthrough with an EP, "I". That EP never made it onto my radar screen. In 2015, they released a single, a cover of REO Speedwagon's, "Keep on Loving You," a version that is true to Cigarettes After Sex's style but bears little resemblance to the original. They followed up with shortly after with another single, "Affection." "Apocalypse" is a cut from their only true studio album, "Cigarettes After Sex." I was a bit surprised to see that the YouTube video (audio only) of the song has over 5,000,000 views. Driven by curiosity, I checked out their "Keep on Loving You" video (29 million views) and "Affection" (41 million views!!!?). This is an astonishing number of hits for an indie band.

In another thread, I mentioned that I had the great satisfaction of seeing Madeleine Peyroux in concert quite recently. I spent the entire time grinning like a child in a toy store. It was a close call........but like I 'splained, it's really a new version of old music. But it wasn't different enough to qualify for the "really different covers" thread. I decided the newness of the interpretation trumped the actual age of the song. And I think that was the correct decision - altho I wouldn't quibble with someone thinking otherwise. If one goes back (or well remembers) the selections in the "old music" thread, they're virtually all old performances, mostly decades old. Using that criteria, it definitely fit better in this thread.

Here's something that may not appeal to a lot of you, or even most of you, but I'm a sucker for a nice groove, and especially a groove with a B-3. I know Hammond is out of bizness, but Suzuki(?) sort of "reinvented" that sound electronically some time back. So I don't know if this an original B-3 or not, but it's sure got that incredibly smooth and gently-vibratoed sound. Some limited shots of the band live show a Technics keyboard, so I can't prove it's a B-3 on this recording, but if not it's just as sweet. Interesting backstory on this band and album: https://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2016/08/23/490958536/the-tragic-turn-of-the-frightnrs-first-and-last-record And yes, although it sounds like '70s Kingston, it's 2016, so "new music".

Glad you like. I feel 'guilty' posting new music, and yet I can never make time to dig into more of your suggestions. But......in fact......I tried above on the Mountain Man (and no, not because of the name) cut, but it's been deleted (or whatever). Maybe you can re-post it from another source, if you think worthwhile. I've got another, yet completely different cut/band I'm considering sharing, but it's one of those cases where overall it's not so wonderful, but there's a really nice guitar groove that's compelling. Oh what the heck. Noelle Taylor I believe is the guitarist, and she's got what to me is an extremely pleasing tone - somewhat reminiscent of Dickie Betts (altho she plays a Fender and of course he wielded a Gibson) and/or that whippersnapper Derek Trucks. But someone else I simply can't place is who she reminds me most of. To be clear.......this is not any 'endorsement' of the band as a whole, or that she is a master - just that this groove pleases me. Jump in at about 2:15 and dig it for about the next minute. S.C.-based.
