Yeah, he sorta got better. LOL. He's been touring a lot with world-class dobroist Rob Ickes the last few years. Including this performance. Coincidentally...........this is the very first song "my boy" Billy played when I first experienced him. Billy's vocal chops are far superior. And technically, this is not a "really different cover", I just think it's a train-of-thought thing. Not to mention, this is quite smokin'.

This is new stuff from Bruce. His new album is a mix of soul and gospel covers. This one isn't necessarily all that different from a production standpoint, but it is certainly a departure for The Boss.

I hesitate to post this, because the video and audio quality are not top-shelf, but it sure fits the thread title - and it's weird and (way) interesting. "My boy" Billy (as Billy the Kid) chose to spend Halloween in Asheville again (I didn't attend), but some great/incredible stories out of his shows (he did 3 consecutive nights - again, with a different stage set each night). Like much craziness, not surprisingly. Much hope among the attendees that they'll put out a concert video or album or something. Supposedly no way to appreciate what it was like live. Which of course if often true, but apparently this was way past the standard on that.

I'll let listeners follow their little noses to see more, if interested, such as "Battle for Evermore", "Ramble On" (not bad at all), and others. After all, Halloween is about taking on alternate identities, right? Some seem to think it was an almost transcendent experience - all the phases and transitions he and band(s) went through, and Billy was just apparently overwhelmed at the end of it all.

Some say the best, or among the best, shows they've ever seen:

This one is not all that different from the original, but the differences are interesting. The original "Cookin' at the Continental" was written by h Horace Silver originally recorded in 1959: https://youtu.be/aoLP_US4Bxc

A fantastic cover/tribute was arranged by Mike Abene for the GRP All-Star Big Band in 1994: https://youtu.be/xUIU4-dhaA0

In mid-2022, as part of his first studio recording in a decade, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band covered this jazz classic and the cut leads off the new album, "12th of June." The arrangement surprised me with its adherence to the original with some really fun additions solos by slide guitar and fiddle.

The harpist in the video Hop linked above, Indiara Sfair, is considered world-class. She also does some duets/duo stuff with the guitar guy, Tiago Juk. Her style seems slightly 'theatric'(?) to me, but that's just my own personal taste (which is more blues-oriented). Lots of her on the 'net, for those who want to hear more of her prominently featured, but I'll leave it for each to follow their nose for those examples.

Here’s an odd cover but anyone ever see the clip of Jessica Lange covering Bowie’s Life on Mars?  ..I love it.    It was for a show, American Horror Story. Only watched a few seasons AHS and didn’t like that one, but adored her cover. Apparently she didn’t need direction, I read somewhere she just showed up that day and did her thing. Folks liked it so much the show creator made it available on iTunes.

Here’s a link to vid: https://youtu.be/2zX0lxiM8Xo?feature=shared

I also LOVE the Fiona apple cover of the Beatles’ Across The Universe she did for the movie Pleasantville.    My fave director, P.T. Anderson, directed the music vid:

 https://youtu.be/CmlnO1EwCT4?si=d_OM2sNGvrtikZ6J

I’d *normally* not accept a cover of either of these already great songs, but I love them both.

Just rewatched the F. Apple cover, man it’s so good. She’s such a badass, imo. And PTAs vid is a beautiful way to encompass that song. Akin to a prayer you can watch. And a nice lift for those days when the world seems a bit divisive.

The Fiona Apple cover certainly made a splash. My son received a bit on an eyebrow raise when he proclaimed to me that it was much better than the Beatles' original.

The Jessica Lange cover was, as you said, odd. It might have sprung from someone telling Lange: "I want you to sing that song as if you are Madeline Kahn channeling Marlene Dietrich."

Back to Pleasantville: I never watched it, and I was surprised to see Jenny Lewis as part of the cast. I have only known Lewis from her singing career with Rilo Kiley and as a solo artist.

Why are you surprised to see Jenny, Buzz? She’s also a badass! She prob liked the movie’s themes. You should watch. We have similar tastes I think and it’s a beautiful film. For the time especially, I thought it was great. Is still great, imo. Not too heavy but not as cheesy as it looks.

Has a beautiful message, basically to shatter small mind sets and learn to embrace that which lie outside the norm, which has been done many times yes, but I never tire of it bc it’s a good one.

I’ll prob rewatch today. And listen to Fiona & Jenny, ha. Thnx for reminder on Rilo Kiley. Haven’t listened to either in a while but both played major parts in soundtrack of my teens /early 20s.

Ps, to your son’s credit, I’ve known musicians who felt cringey to say they like her cover as much as og. It does feel like heresy to ever declare a Beatles cover as better than theirs, esp a deep one like this.. It’d be diff if it were poppy-maxwells silver hammer or similar. But Apple held her own w this, folks have to give it to her. + I don’t think she was so bold to try for better or even as good, but as a nod to a song she loves. Glad she wasn’t intimidated to try. But what can you expect, it’s why she’s a badass.

PSS- had a roommate whose sis looked near identical to Fiona. Also know a pretty decent Lewis doppelgänger. Life must have conjured them based on playlists, ha.

My hometown NPR station (operated by the local college) was bit off the usual path. No classical music hours or local gardener talk shows. They were pretty much alt-rock when they weren't broadcasting the NPR news programs. And, they had a weekly reggae program. I heard that song more than a few times. Top drawer!

Alison Brown has always been underappreciated by the world at large, but she's always surrounded by *the best* talent.  I've been a fan for a long time, buuut..............I'm not always a fan of her choices of music and stylings.  For me this falls into that category - but I think "that's just me".  Quality rendition - and not a bad idea - but just doesn't grab me.  For those few here who like bluegrass, check out virtually any of her more 'mainstream' efforts.  NOT that there's anything wrong with this.

I don’t disagree about the choice. I found this video while trying to convince a friend to make a road trip to see her. Thought I would share it here while I had the link on my clipboard.

She is far more capable than than she shows in that video, but I have tickets!  The venue is intimate to say the least.

I don't think I've ever seen her as a headliner, but almost certainly saw her with Alison Krauss's Union Station band (way back when), which is guys with deep ties to here.  And I may have seen her as part of some conglomeration at a festival or something like that.  She'll often play with "all those Nashville cats" - the usual suspects - but I expect you'll be seeing her with her usual band.  An intimate venue sounds (pun acknowledged) perfect.

This may sound weird (altho maybe not to you).........but I've always thought of her as an 'intelligent' musical explorer - a thoughtful experimenter.  While she's done (and does) her share of straight bluegrass, I think she's really most fond of the more progressive newgrass - my groove spot.

"'Intelligent' music explorer." I like that.

She has a reasonable eductation, collecting a couple of certificates from programs of some repute. No Berklee, but she's managed to limp along.

I *guess* a B.S. from Harvard and an MBA from UCLA qualifies as "a reasonable education".  LOL.  No one would question that Bela is an intelligent musical explorer.  He's waaay out there on that scale.  In fact he (along with a very limited number of others) pretty much defines that metric.  Others' mileages may vary, but I'd put Alison maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the way to 'wherever' he is.

Edit:  to be clear, not meaning on the intelligence part, just referring to the "explorer" part.  They're probably about the same place on the intelligence metric - not that I'd know.
