A musician friend recommended I check this out. It's Jerry Lee at the Palomino Club which was in LA. This is about the same time period I saw him at Jazzfest (late '80s) - from about 8-10 ft. away. Altho I'm not really a Jerry Lee fan, as a whole, I can sure admire his originality and talent. So seeing him up close was quite the experience. He's a force-of-nature kind of guy - both good and bad, obviously. His flourishes and seemingly intuitive keyboard stylings are kinda fun to see here.

Jerry Lee has done one of the best, and one of the worst live performances I have ever seen. The best, was when he headlined the halftime show at the 1982 Liberty Bowl in Memphis. That game (at that time) always has a huge half time show, 30 minutes. Also was Bear Bryant's very last football game as head coach of Alabama. We had to set the stage at mid field in 90 seconds during the commercial break. He rocked the house down. Had everyone in the stands dancing. And the worst was at a bar in Charlotte, ~ 5-10 years later. From the beginning, you could tell he absolutely did *not* want to be there. One of the most abysmal performances I have ever seen by anyone.

This is 'kinda' fun, kinda weird and awkward, kinda juvenile at points, but is certainly an interesting time capsule, as this was recorded either the last evening of Woodstock (I think), or the very next day. Stephen, at least, still has on the clothes he performed in. But neither David nor the Airplane guys do, best I can tell from comparing to on-site pics. And Joni wasn't there, of course. Not one of Dick Cavett's better interviews, imo.

Saw Animal Collective quite recently, nearing the end of their latest tour. Although they didn't play this song, it's the one with the most mileage on YouTube. They are awesome in concert, but know what you're getting into. Their albums and performances remind me of an old post by Denny in which he showed a picture of a sound/loop machine played simply by pressing buttons. "Is this still music?" was his comment. A portion of the crowd at Animal Collective was leaning toward "not music" and steadily trickled out during the concert.

Not sure why this would be in the "Old Music" thread, but I subjected myself to that full video. And can see why peeps were leaving. I couldn't begin to stomach a full set of that. I mean..........it's not *bad* per se.........just fairly quickly boring. Some of the visuals were trippy, especially the last quarter of it, but I can certainly see why Denny posted what he did. And I tend to give pretty wide latitude to the term "music".

AIC, Dirt, vinyl, 1080, ahhh...(listening to this album repeatedly in its entirety upon its very release (as I sailed the Med/Persian Gulf back in '92 as a USN electronics technician third class) saved me from ever, ever touching hard opioids...the pain in Layne Staley's voice is utterly and pitifully palpable, in tracks "Sickman" and "Dirt" and "Down in a Hole" particularly... ...though I do admit to enjoying opium-laced mary jane *once* back in the late 90's...took me three days of brushing teeth to get the taste and hard urge to re-smoke out the mouth...KIDS, YOU LISTEN: don't do it, else you'll pay... I suspect roughly two-tenths of one percent freecellers being opioid addicts--roughly one-tenth the national average (id est, 1 in 50........................though I may be being rosily optimistic in those estimations, considering the pill-popping ease of addiction these days...

Dinosaur Jr. rolled into my neck of the woods, and I had the pleasure of seeing them. They're getting on in age, but still put on a great show. The twenty-somethings (all on the floor in GenAd) really liked the energy but few had any idea what they were seeing. After the recent discussions here at freecell.net about tubes vs solid state for amps, I had to smile at J Mascis's towering wall of Marshall amps.

I went to a John Hiatt concert as a return on a debt to a friend who him. I am familiar with some of his music, but I never took the plunge until this show. The concert was great. The audience was filled with big fans of his, and he performed with great energy. For me, the star of the show was Sonny Landreth. That man can play a guitar, and I couldn't take my eyes off him. The clip below is from a few decades ago and features Landreth.

Very curiously, after our earlier discussion, I listened to maybe about 5 selections (of Johnston's), then put it out of my mind. For a few weeks, when out of nowhere (altho probably not really), I had the urge to listen again, and played his stuff for an hour or more, non-stop - which was 'enough'. So? So.........since then, maybe every 3 or 4 days, I hear snippets of his style, or influence in widely disparate other music. Always maybe 5-8 seconds or so. Quite strange. And I'm not at all implying that other artists have somehow sampled his work, or even were influenced by it. Or even that it *sounds* like his stuff. It's just that I hear a cadence, voice inflection, or something, that rings a little recognition bell. I can't ever remember experiencing this phenomenon with an other artist. And it's not like I love his stuff. I don't hate it, either - it's just so distinctive. It's actually somewhat eerie, and makes me wonder if somehow something got tweaked in my subconscious. Landreth and Hiatt comments to come...........

I've never seen John Hiatt, despite having chances. He's one of those artists I greatly admire, but don't 'like' all that much. I think it's his voice, but am not totally sure. I sorta put him and John Hammond both in that same category. He (Hiatt) sure is a big chief talent magnet, tho. Landreth can indeed smoke it. Saw him at one of the Jazzfests, altho not as the headliner. Sort of the ax-for-hire. But can't remember whether it was with one of those blues conglomerations or with one of the zydeco acts. I know.......bad on me (and unlike me -- but Jazzfests are such sensory overloads; hard to keep track). He's got all the tasty licks, and doesn't try to showboat it. Plays with all the bigwigs down in N.O. and around Lafayette. Most serious music lovers (and other guitar slingers) know him, but John Q. Public generally doesn't.

First about Hiatt: "He's one of those artists I greatly admire, but don't 'like' all that much. I think it's his voice." What voice? He kinda sounds like a handful of gravel inside a hubcap. But, highly entertaining. Landreth: In the opening tune, I swore I could hear a fiddle playing, but there were only four performers on stage with two guitars, a bass, and the drums. I realized it was Landreth teasing his guitar with his slide to give it the fiddle sound. TN, I don't have to tell you the range that he displayed in the 80 minute set, from hard-driving southern rock to straight up folk to coaxing bizarre sounds out of his instrument that I have seen only a few times before. Finger tapping, hand patting, holding the neck with his slide while picking above, bringing his slide all the way to the bottom and picking on the tiny space remaining. And it wasn't just noise -- it all fit in the songs and sounded fantastic. The other two members of The Goners (who have backed Hiatt off and on over the decades) were solid but not spectacular. I would never have seen this event if not for repaying the favor to my fellow attendee. Glad I did. Next up for us: Bela Fleck. The opener was Calder Allen, grandson of Terry Allen. Calder has a bit of a whispery voice, but appears to be a good writer. He was accompanied by Charlie Sexton, a bit of a legend in his own right.

Here's some smooth and powerful stuff from Sonny and Derek #2 (and no, that's not Derek #1 on bass, altho it looks like him; that's Dave Ranson). Not much slouchin' goin' on here - just a lot of mutual respect. For those not hep........Congo Square is a (very, very) historic spot in N.O. - and was where the first few Jazzfests were held. You can look it up to learn the history (of the square), if you wish. Point being, Landreth is steeped in the essences of Congo Square. The Nevilles wrote/codified the song, and it's a N.O. staple.
