Ike Davis was acquired from the Mets this month. While a Met on April 5, he hit a grand slam home run. As a Pirate, he hit a grand slam homer this past week, too. Both Home runs were against the Reds. And the most recent one included a broken bat. He has hit only two homers so far this season, and both were grand slams. (Bases loaded, 4 runs scored.) He is only the third player to hit two grand slams in the month of April while playing for two different teams, and the first to do it against the same opponent! The Mets were happy to unload him and his $3.5M plus salary, and now the Buccos fans love him. ---------------------------------------------- Second oddity: The Penguins are leading the Columbus team in the NHL Playoffs, 2 games to 1. In every game, the losing team had held a 3-1 goals advantage, before finally giving up the tying goal and then losing. But I understand the players on both teams would gladly take a 3-1 lead and then chance giving it up!

Since Snowguy has the power and he likes Pittsburgh sports teams. I was a huge fan of the 1960 Pitt Pirates, during college staying up late and listening to their games on WWVA. How could you not love Dick Stuart, he even came to the Bosox. He couldn't field at all. He once got a crowd error on missing a candy wrapper blown at him by the wind. He was colourful. Maz was the best 2nd baseman by far. The announcer was Bob Prince. also Who did you leave out when you made out your NL all star ballot ? Clemente, Mays, Aaron, Frank Robinson ejchap

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, after only four games this series set an NHL record. The first series of any length that four games were won by teams that had to overcome deficits of two goals or more. Again, all four games were won 4-3. We Pirates fans understand how the nation's fans are all hoping for the Blue Jackets to win it. If the Pens keep falling asleep, this will be no problem.

Snowguy: "We Pirates fans understand how the nation's fans are all hoping for the Blue Jackets to win it." Not so. Although I only follow the NHL *very* obliquely, and it's somewhat refreshing to know there's a team nicknamed "Blue Jackets", most of the nation must root against all things Columbus (sorry MikeC) - due to: a) it being very flat and boring; b) being a former, long-time home of a Yankees farm team, and c) harboring and tolerating (if not downright worshiping) Woody Hayes.

TN After graduating from college in 1964, I was the manager for a great basketball coach in college. I coached 3 years of high school basketball, but I decided to leave coaching behind. I didn't think the other coaches and athletic directors were moral people. I was asked to do unethical things. Like in the off seasons to supervise next year's team, which all the cheaters did. Most of these cheaters are in their schools Hall Of Fame. I didn't want to be like them ejchap

This is pretty incredible - 47 assists on 53 baskets by the Warriors..... Most in the NBA since Phoenix also had 47 in a game in 1991. Also, the most points in a game the Warriors have ever scored, and their largest margin of victory ever.

Today's crazy basketball scores on the football field: Pitt 76, Syracuse 61. And yes, that's football (so-called). Yet neither of their basketball teams has scored 76 points in their last 4 meetings. Check out the stats from the link below. Especially read the "my five favorite things" at the bottom of the story. #5 is just incomprehensible, really. Well, they all are for that matter. And Navy hung 75 on SMU. Yes, the ponies are weak, but still...

The Pitt/Syracuse stats sure are staggering! One of the interesting things about statistics is that, if you collect enough of them, you will find some that are very unusual. And, from time to time, records are broken! Some new records in sports are probably due to improved equipment and training techniques (and incentives -- in some sports, millions of $$$ are at stake).

When I saw the Pitt/'Cuse score on the screen crawl during another football game, I assumed it was a hoops scores. It was not until the third time the score moved through that I realized it was a football score. 133 points in 60 minutes: that's a touchdown every three minutes. Pitt's time of possession was 24 minutes -- 2.4 minutes per TD. Pitt had 10 TDs with 20 first downs; averaging 11 yards per play, that meant two plays for a first down, then a TD. Syracuse was only slightly less effective. 1300 total yards of offense. Hello defense? Hello?

I noticed Navy's 75 but also thought the Pitt/'Cuse score was for hoops. Clearly, Syracuse should have been throwing more. Getting 5.1 yards per run was not going to get the job done in this game. Oh, and if the game was on TV, the advertisers must have loved it since it seems like every score is always followed by 2-3 minutes of commercials. In a somewhat related sports oddity, a 60-something white male who lives in the Seattle area and grew up playing football in the streets checked the score of the Sounders soccer game before playing in the freecell Masters and forgot all about the Seahawks NFL game (which, looks to have been forgettable).

Prior to 1967, the NFL record for fewest yards of total offense by one team in a single game was 14, held by the Chicago Cardinals in a game against Detroit. Second place in that category was 16, held by Detroit, in a game against the Chicago Cardinals. Yes, it was the same game. Final score, 0-0. (The record was broken by the Broncos in 1967, managing only -5 yards offense in a 51-0 loss to the Raiders. It was broken again in 1979, by the Seahawks, racking up a whopping -7 yards in a 24-0 loss to the Rams.)
