Night before last, UK hosted Evansville in Rupp, and was an appropriate 25-point favorite. The Purple Aces had heretofore gone 0-33 against top AP top 25 teams on the road. While being ranked #1, UK was 39-0 at home against unranked non-conference teams. Also, UK had not lost as #1 against an unranked, non-major conference team since 1950 - at home or on the road. And so.........of course the Purple Aces pulled the gigantic upset or I wouldn't be posting this. Even more..........Evansville's win is only the 4th-ever win for a DI team to have their first victory over an AP top 25 team to happen to be over the #1-ranked team.

In these days of one-and-done in NCAA BB, it's a bit presumptuous to even have a pre-season and early season polls. Especially because human voters are extremely prone to holding onto their opinions even after evidence accumulates against them. Maybe UK will turn out to be a top-5 team but maybe this is evidence that they are going to have struggles over the year. That said, this is still a huge, huge upset. I recall reading that Evansville only won 11 games last year and were picked to finish 8th of 10 in their conference this year.

Wow. 1/28, and 1/4 FT. And yes, such definitely qualifies for this thread. Without taking time to go back to the beginning of the thread, I believe there have been other accounts herein of futility. Certainly the Rockets failings at 3-pt. shooting at the end of that finals game was discussed - at least I believe it was in this thread. On my phone now so too difficult to search.

The women's college futility record, btw, is a 56-2 halftime score from three years ago. But in both cases the powerhouses eased up considerably - last week's game finished "only" 97-29, and the final score for the other one was 87-35. Btw, I keep track a few NBA "oddities" files, some are 20 y.o. Given a few answered on Quora on stuff like that, not sure if anyone here knows/reads there. For instance, you wondered if 4 players scoring 23+ is a record. I know of at least nine games in which a team had 4 players scoring 25+ (the record is 4 with 28+). The last two were in 2005 and 2006, and all others between 1960 and 1973.

I'm 'led' to Quora from time to time, but find myself FAR too easily sucked in to the array of interesting tidbits. On the other hand.........there's a few responses there that are quite the waste of time. Refresh my memory on my question about 4 scoring 23+. I'm sure that had to be NBA, but I don't (quickly) find it in this thread - altho I suspect it's here. While we apparently both are enamored of odd stats and extremes, I've not taken the time to record such things - at least not in the last several decades. My favorite book growing up was "Guinness Book of World Records", not surprisingly.

Ha - I had checked pages 5, 4, and 1, but was following a game live so didn't want to invest more time in it. So.....do you record this stuff in your own records (as you're made aware of them) for your own interests/purposes, or also scan feeds, etc. for them? When I had one of my browsers crash recently, I had about 6-7 tabs open in Quora, all having to do with science stuff, mostly paleoanthropology and such as that. Unfortunately, that site requires cookies to keep reading something, and since I hate that, I usually only get to read the first few sentences of things. Oh well....... Altho like many, I follow the NBA most when the playoffs roll around, I've always been interested, especially since I've played the game a lot. Ultimately, college basketball is more interesting, as it's more unpredictable (slightly), each game means more, and (in general) there's more team play (which is also why I've really enjoyed seeing the success of the Spurs and Warriors). I think the NBA would do well to shorten the season by about 15-20-25 games, but then (like freecell) the historical records would be all thrown off. EVERYbody knows the season shouldn't last from October to June, but the financial hit to shorten it is just too much to swallow. Just insane.

The 49ers and Saints combined for 94 points yesterday. That's the most combined points in a match-up of teams with at least 10 wins in NFL history. Previous record was 86 points in the 14-1 Packers' 45-41 win over the 10-5 Lions in Week 17, 2011. Crazy game. Also.........Lamar Jackson of joey's Ravens is now only 23 yards away from Michael Vick's single-season rushing record for a QB of 1,039 yds. And is, after yesterday, only the second QB to have gone over 1,000 in NFL history.

Ah, the Matt Flynn game. Never has a player made so much money out of one meaningless game. Watched it live, that was fun. The exact 1000 total pass yards (Flynn 480, 6TD; Stafford 520, 5TD) are still an NFL record. The 11 combined passing TD tied a record, since broken by Brees and Eli (7, 6) in the Saints 52-49 win over the Giants in 2015. As for the "at least 10 wins" of the Niners-Saints, that's only because it's later in the season than the record 54-51 Rams-Chiefs MNF from last year.

Drew Brees. For those not paying attention..................he passed both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in career passing TDs last night - for the all-time record. But what was really even more remarkable (since we knew that was about to almost certainly happen anyway), is the completion percentage on his passing attempts. He broke the completion percentage (>20 passes) set by Phillip Rivers just last year. Rivers was an absurd 28/29. Brees topped that with 29/30. He completed his last 22, and so if he should complete his first 4 next game, that would set that record, too.

It's amusing that before last night the career TD ranking was Manning 539, Brady 538, Brees 537. Brees is on pace to break once more his own record for single season completion percentage (currently 75.8%). He holds the top 3 marks all-time and 5 of the top 7. It will be his sixth season over 70%. Before he broke the record for the first time, a decade ago, there had only been 4 such QB seasons all-time (and the first two only played 8-9 games): Baugh 1945(!), Ken Anderson 1982, Montana 1989, Young 1994.

Well................there's so much to report from yesterday's NCAA playoff games it's hard to know where to start: Previous to yesterday, Ohio St. was 76-0 in games in which they had a 16+ pt. lead. (Something seems wonky about that stat, like there needs to be another qualifier, but that's what I heard them say after the game.) As to Joe Burrow and LSU's destruction of the Sooners....... Bowl/SEC records: Burrow set a new FBS record for touchdown responsibility in a bowl game (eight) Burrow tied the FBS record for passing touchdowns in a bowl game (seven) Burrow tied LSU and SEC single-game records for passing touchdowns (seven) LSU broke the SEC single-game record for touchdowns as team in a bowl (nine) College Football Playoff records (a somewhat small sample size, of course): Burrow was responsible for eight total touchdowns Burrow threw seven touchdowns Burrow had 403 passing yards in the first half Burrow had 515 total yards Jefferson registered four receiving touchdowns Jefferson had 227 receiving yards LSU scored 49 points in the first half LSU scored 63 total points in a game LSU registered 692 yards of total offense LSU and Oklahoma combined for 91 points, the most in regulation I actually think there were more than that - I'm just not gonna track them all down. All that said........................the Ohio St./Clemson game was absolutely one for the ages. A true gladiator-fest.

With the NCAA cancelling all winter sports tournaments (e.g., basketball) and all spring sports, a lot of college seniors were having their last hurrah taken from them. The prevailing thought was, "OMG, that sucks! College sports are important, but we must press on to the next phases of our life." And then the NCAA decided to go full on stupid: they are granting an extra year of eligibility to all spring sport athletes (but not winter). This is the warm and fuzzy solution, but the consequences are far reaching. 1) All affected sports will now have two freshman classes and five active classes in total (and the complications of "red shirts") 2) The affected programs are not required to honor the scholarships of those athletes who were in their final year of eligibility. A senior who returns next year may do so with reduced or no scholarship funds. 3) Coaches now must decide how to handle recruiting of high school seniors, next year's freshmen. The coaches must honor existing commitments, but unsigned freshmen will be facing a diminished scholarship pool. 4) Full-ride scholarships for the non-revenue sports (and that's everything but basketball and football) are far less common than in basketball and football. The seniors will be deciding if they will return for another year of college and all accompanying financial burden. We live in interesting times.

This is a recent sports broadcasting oddity, but I think it is worth mentioning. And this thread is not likely to have any business for a while.... My television is permanently tuned to ESPN, even in these times no sports. I finished watching a recorded show and pressed the Live TV button to exit the DVR. I was shocked to find that ESPN was broadcasting the movie, Secretariat. I was stunned. I am fairly confident that ESPN has not aired a Hollywood, box office movie in decades. Maybe ever. Back in the day, ESPN stood for Entertainment and Sports Broadcasting Network. I am certain was watching ESPN within days of when the network went live back in September 1979. Their concept was to broadcast sports and other stuff (I cannot recall anything but sports). I cannot fault ESPN for entering the movie broadcast biz. Nearly every sporting event on the planet has been cancelled, with rare exceptions like Sumo Wrestling in Japan (in empty arenas) and some baseball in a few Latin American countries. None of the sporting leagues will even give a hint as to when they might start up again, but it will be a minimum of two months. Maybe ESPN will broadcast some reruns of Box de Mexico from the late 70s. I watched it then, I'd watch it now. (Cabezazo means headbutt in Spanish. It's good to know.)

I think I remember "Raging Bull" being on not more than 5-7 years ago, and I think others, too, such as "And When We Were Kings" (awesome; discussed earlier on this board, for different reasons). Maybe I caught a glimpse of "Hoosiers", too, once. And going WAY back, seems like I remember "The Longest Yard". Now it's possible those, or some of those, were on ESPN2. But I believe some movie airings predate that channel. And one just can't get much Australian Rules Football these days (at least in the U.S.).

The ruling from official scorekeepers (as stated during the game) is the only time that error could be reversed is if the ball would have been a home run had the fielder had not touched it. In this case, the ball would have dropped in for a single or double, not a HR. However, the exceptions to that ruling are legion. For example, the legendary ball bouncing off the top of Jose Conseco's head for a home run. In the absence of Conseco, that ball falls into the field of play. But, that was not the call.

Hmm. I don’t necessarily think the Conseco ruling was botched. They’re always calling hits when fielders lose it in the lights, regardless of whether it was touched by the fielder or not. I mean, logically there’s no surer “error” than when two guys look at each other and the ball falls between them, but that’s usually a hit too. When it hits th fielder’s glove official scorers are much closer to calling an error but still not a slam dunk.
