Warriors were down 39 at the half Thursday night. Tonight they were *up* 31 in crushing da Bulls. That 70-point at-halftime swing is the largest since the initiation of the shot-clock era. So says Elias. I have a hard time fathoming it *ever* happened - but that's why we have Hop checking on these things. :)

The Warriors are still playing musical chairs with their lineup. Klay Thompson just returned after missing over a year with injuries. Dramond Green is out with a calf injury. The Bulls are missing players due to the cause that cannot be named. Regardless, that's a wild flip from one game to the next.

Staying with the NBA, Luka Doncic attained 40 triple doubles in the second fewest games in NBA history. He got there in 226 games; Oscar Robertson got there in 92 games. Doncic has 40 career triple doubles for the Mavericks; over the entire history of the Mavericks franchise, the team has accumulated 80 triple doubles.

Like The Big O, Luca Doncic appears born to be doing what he's doing. Dude is 22. The assist which got him last night's (I think) triple double was a ho-hum, in-traffic, behind-the-back bounce pass to his teammate cutting down the lane for an easy basket. Like some of the very greatest players of various sports.........he often can make very difficult feats look easy. And his body really doesn't fit the 'standard' NBA template. His almost looks like a large "dad bod". A remarkable talent, as an understatement.

"But there was one thing that the Bills did that no team has ever achieved in the 102 year history of the National Football League. The Bills had seven drives on offense. And on each and every drive, the Bills scored a touchdown. They didn’t punt, allow a turnover, or kick a field goal all game and the Bills are the first to ever do that."

Well........I wasn't rubbing it in. Was only reporting a fairly amazing stat. But............if you're a fan of the cheaters..............then, oh well. But mostly, haven't the Pats won enough for like 30 years? Let some other teams have some chances. [I do find it surprising that they only had 7 possessions for the entire game. I didn't watch much of it, but that must have been methodical drive after methodical drive.]

Well, I know, and we've discussed this issue here in some depth before. But for me it's certainly not that, as I'm not really a fan of any NFL team. I used to (sorta) be of the Redskins because of their moniker, but can't be now. And I *Iike* Beantown - a lot. It's just a matter of spreading the wealth. Mostly. But the cheating helps say let others have their chances.

So earlier this evening, on "Antiques Road Show", they had a collection of memorabilia concerning the first unassisted triple play, from 1909, performed by Neal Ball of the Cleveland Naps. Apparently Cy Young was the pitcher. Ball's neice was the owner, and the major piece was a silver vase/cup presented by The Plain Dealer, but there was also a large newspaper cartoon sketching out how the play took place. Pretty cool. And yeah, I realize that 1909 isn't "recent", but since this thread is our triple play thread......

A further quirk concerning the chronology of history's 15 triple play occurrences: two occurred on consecutive days in 1927; then it was 41 years before the next one. Kinda like some of the odd freecell statistical events, no?

Lucked into clicking on the Winter Olympics yesterday and caught the skate of Kamila Valieva. She landed a triple axel smooth as a baby’s bottom. Most men struggle on a triple axel. The few women who have ever done so have always looked like they were birthing a baby (Tonya Harding being the only exception). Apparently (and I should say very apparently) Kamila is the skating goddess. She skated again tonight and she landed three quads (and looked great landing them). She crashed on the last quad but d**n - most guys don’t land quads. She is so dang good, she’d threaten to medal in the Men’s competition. She won’t skate again until the end of the week but worth watching. History in the making.

OK, maybe not the best thread to take this tact but Valieva clearly makes almost all past women’s figure skaters look obsolete. She’s a fantastic athlete and she’s extremely graceful and artistic. But, she’s competing in a very small pond. It takes lots of money to get good at ice skating. She had state-sponsored support since she was three. The Nancy Kerrigan’s of the world no longer have a chance. (Money, but not athletic enough). Nor do the Tonya Harding’s (athletic, but not graceful enough and not enough money to get there)

Ok, here's an utterly astonishing one.......................Feb. 8 - Evansville vs. Indiana St. - ZERO offensive rebounds for either team. Like, ZERO. And altho the link I provide doesn't mention it, Indiana St. also was 0/17 from deep. That makes it even more amazing, because when you shoot and miss a lot of long shots, there will tend to be some long caroms, and *surely* you'll gather some of those boards. But no, not in this case. This stretches the limits of credulity, but apparently it's true.

You're probably thinking of Loyola Marymount, who had Hank Gathers (who died late in the season on the court), and Bo Kimble. I think they averaged something like an astonishing 120 ppg. Well more than the great UNLV teams who came before them. And they weren't just high scorers; they were very, very good in general.

Well, the ROC are clearly still cheats. Valieva still gets to skate (partially because she’s not 16 yet). The biggest tragedy is that she still might be the best female skater ever even if she hadn’t been using drugs. Sigh.

The last previous March Madness thread I can find is from 2013. Dang how time flies........ So.....instead of posting a couple of items there, I'll just put them here: 1. When Duke won in S.F. last night over Texas Tech, it was Duke's first tourney win west of the Mississippi - at least I'm pretty certain I heard them say that. They had previously been 0-5. That's a rather startling, incredible stat right there. 2. Most here know this, but worth stating: St. Peter's glorious win tonight make them the first 15 seed (or lower) to make the Elite 8. Although I can't claim I predicted they'd beat KY, I did think they'd win tonight over Purdue.

Well..........as always.........lots of incredible-ness in this tournament. Just a few things: Unbelievably.............................Saturday's game between UNC and Duke was the first time they've ever met in the NCAA tournament. That's a quite stupefying factoid. But remember, until sometime in the '70s, only conference tournament champions could be in the tournament. But that still leaves 50 years or so of both being eligible, and the very vast majority of times both those teams were both in it. It's hardly believable, but true. And this meeting didn't disappoint. Back-and-forth haymakers and drama the whole game, with EIGHTEEN lead changes. Coach K's final coaching game. As a footnote, almost all Duke's players left after the game without shaking hands with the opponents, which is customary. Deep disappointment, but still poor sportsmanship. Kansas's comeback tonight (16 pts.) was the largest ever in an NCAA final game, topping the 15-pt. comeback by Loyola (Chicago) to best Cincy in 1963. Armando Bacot had his 31st double double of the year, tying mega-stud David Robinson for most ever in a season. He's also the first to score 6 double doubles in one tournament. Pretty amazing, but obviously a player would have to be on a team that at least played for the championship, therefore limiting competition. But sadly............re-injuring his ankle with 49 seconds left in the game allowed Kansas the opportunity to score another basket inside, thereby almost assuring the outcome.

There's a nice follow-up to that story, in which the next day, Judge (the hitter of the HR), met with the young fan in the Blue Jays(?) dugout, and the kid was just all tears. Last night................the (Amazin'!) Mets entered the ninth down 6 to the Phillies. The previous 330 times the Mets entered the ninth down 6 or more, they lost. But not last night. They came back to win 8-7. Only the third time in their history they've pulled that off. I guess there was no fat lady available to sing. In general............................for MLB teams, that ends a streak of *857* losses in a row by teams entering the ninth down 6 runs of more. And all that's besides this: https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/06/sport/shohei-ohtani-angels-red-sox-mlb-spt-intl/index.html That's a little bit of a "made-up" stat because it's so park-specific, but still...........
