Here you go: ====================== No hits, no prob: Bucs win with 0 hits, top Greene, Reds 1-0 PITTSBURGH -- — In what's quickly become a lost season for the Cincinnati Reds, this really was the ultimate misery. Prized rookie Hunter Greene and reliever Art Warren combined to allow zero hits in a complete game, but it didn't count as a no-hitter — or even a win. Instead, the Pittsburgh Pirates eked out a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on three walks and a groundout for a 1-0 victory Sunday. "It would have been great to have a different result, but it is what it is," Greene said. Ke'Bryan Hayes' RBI grounder helped the Pirates become the sixth team in big league history since 1901 to win despite not getting any hits. It last happened in 2008 when Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo of the Angels lost while holding the Dodgers hitless. By Major League Baseball record-keeping rules, Cincinnati's accomplishment isn't an official no-hitter because its pitchers didn't go at least nine innings.

Thats the first I've heard of that situation not counting as a no-hitter, but it *is* a rare circumstance. So that means that there can never be a no-hitter in these rinky-dink 7-inning "baseball light" doubleheader games, right - unless there's extra innings? Reminds me of poor ol' Harvey Haddix. And of course Ernie ("Let's-play-two") Banks rolls again in his grave..........

I’m a huge Athletics (aka Track and Field) fan. A US high school sprinter may have run the fastest non-PED time ever in the 200 meters. Crazy fast. 19.49 seconds. I’m 99% convinced all faster times have benefited from PED’s. My only question is if US High School Athletics has the high level of drug testing as exists at the college and pro track levels. Erriyon Knighton is his name. My big worry: You just can’t go below 19.6 without PED’s. Is he a cheat or a phenomenon?

Wow! Have not heard of that dude. *Generally* speaking...........such testing is in the province of the academic authority concerned, which would be the local school board - so likely a very hit-and-miss situation. It's possible some states will test at the state level for state meets or something, but I don't have any info on that. "Upon further review"..............looks like he's already turned pro. See link. He's also 6'3" - so really already "a full-grown man". Read the last couple of paragraphs of that linked article. Aiding wind on that 19.49 was 1.4(m/s), so helped a tad but still legal. How come this hasn't been bigger news?

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi tonight became only the third pitcher in major league history to serve up 5 HRs in one inning. After a 3-up, 3-down first, the 'stros did the deed in Fenway. First time Houston had smacked 5 dingers in an inning, and first time the Bosox had allowed it. There were boos. Eovaldi allowed only 15 HRs last season in 32 starts, but has allowed 14 already this season - the most in the majors. And oh............the 'stros won 13-4.

Time will tell ... Gary Martin's 3:57.98 is truly outstanding. Fourth fastest all-time for a U.S. high schooler outdoors and sixth overall. The four minute barrier is not quite as huge as it once was. Martin is the third this year to break 4:00. Ryun broke it five times in high school, with his fastest being 3:55.3. Alan Webb holds the U.S. high school record with 3:53.43. As for the overall record, Webb holds the U.S. record with a 3:46.91. The world record is 3:43.13 by Hicham El Guerrouj.

Yeah, but it *was* a foul on Wiggins. It was inadvertent, but he caught Doncic pretty good in the adam's apple with his off-arm. Was shocked they reversed the original (correct) call. I truly think they caved to the awesome 'sentiment'(?) of the moment. And it *may* have affected the outcome - altho not likely. Reminded me of the one Morant threw down in the previous series. Which was actually a tad better.

The Warriors 21-0 run last night in the first half was the longest in the Finals in over 50 years. Previous record in that time frame was 20-0, by the Warriors in game 2 in 2019. Somewhat curiously...................Curry bagged only 3 of those 21 points, being on the bench a good bit of that time. Juan Toscano-Anderson is the first person of Mexican descent to win an NBA title - and he did it with his hometown team. Jayson Tatum is the first player in NBA history with 100 turnovers in a single postseason. [Not that Tatum was somehow a huge drag on the Celtics. He had a bad 6th game, but Celtics wouldn't have won a lot of postseason games without him. He just always has a lot of touches.] One could go on and on about the Curry superlatives, but I suspect most already know all or most of those.

BTW......................Frank Schwindel is a "position player" (1B), not a regular pitcher, so that's an added tidbit. The Cubs are very short of decent pitching these days, and they were down something like 17-3(?) at the time, so.......... It's also not his first pitching experience. I think maybe his third(?).

What this headline refers to is a little bit one of those "made-up" stats (and I'll let you all ferret that out) - but what's more noteworthy (imo) are his more general pitching stats over his last 6 starts: 0.45 ERA and 58 Ks in 39 2/3. That's Koufax-ian or Gibson-ian.

July 3rd, the Angels Taylor Ward hits a single. The left fielder tosses the ball to second base. Ward sees the first baseman ahead of him so he casually walks back to first when thew second baseman throws to the catcher Martín Maldonado who had snuck behind Taylor Ward. Maldonado tagged Ward out. It's the first time in MLB history that a hitter singled only to be tagged out by the catcher. If you're scoring at home that's a 9-4-2 putout. mrbuck

It's possible mrbuck suffers from directional dyslexia - also known as directsylia - for which no shame is necessary. More likely........when mrbuck is not on the mound, he sometimes fills in in left field, as they like to have his bat in the line-up. (Which is not to imply he's not also dandy in right.) So probably, he was just imagining himself making that play.

Besides the Ukrainian Woman's High Jumper, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, going high in the Brussels Diamond League Athletics event last week, Washington State native Kara Winger went long in the Women's Javelin in Brussels, unleashing a last-round throw of 223' (aka 68.11m). Her throw set a new American Record, is the longest throw in the world this year, and the 12th longest throw ever. Take out performances with hints of PED's and it is likely a top-5 performance all-time (IMHO). Interestingly, Kara is planning to retire. Hopefully, she'll reconsider since she has been, "in-the-zone", this year.

From ESPN: Under-the-radar game of the week............ You're forgiven if you didn't have Fordham at Ohio circled on the TV schedule Saturday, but the Rams and Bobcats put on one heck of a show. Both teams had more than 600 yards of offense. Both had more than 500 passing yards. Both had more than 100 penalty yards. Final score: Ohio 59, Fordham 52. But the score was hardly the best part of the action. The highlight was Fordham receiver Fotis Kokosioulis, who finished with an astounding 320 yards receiving on 13 catches, four of which went for TDs. And he did all that despite lugging around all those letters on the back of his jersey. Amazing.

The Broncos/49ers game tonight is a painful sight. Current score 7-5 at the end of the 3rd quarter. You would never guess from this exercise in futility that the QBs had both been to the Super Bowl. At the half, there had been a total of 10 punts, more than the number of first downs. In the 3rd quarter, 49ers QB Jimmy G threw a pick six from his end zone, but it was negated by the fact that he inadvertently stepped past the back line for a safety.
