I almost added on my post that your wisdom and expertise might be required for this. Not quite as weird as section 12.73.4, which spells out what to do when a UFO lands in both/either fair and/or foul territory - but in that direction. On my third reading, I think I absorbed it, but even as an ex-ump I don't think I'd have imagined it depended on which throw resulted in the tag. I suspect that specificity was added after I hung up my clicker and chest protector - back when they started the curious practice of building fences, when the batsmen could no longer request the location of pitches, and when the wearing of top hats by fans fell by the wayside.

Yes, it really happened ("went down" 😆). Tonight, a good-sized goose landed in the outfield behind the second baseman, laid down - and they kept playing, temporarily, tonight in the Dodgers/Padres playoff game. Apparently first time a goose has been in the playoffs since Gossage back in '81. Lots of funny memes and jokes 'flying around'. Seems like there's been so much interest that links have changed, etc. You all are smart enough to figure it out.........

In 2014, Ray Rice was seen in a security video hitting his fiancée in the face, knocking her unconscious. Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The general feeling about the incident was that the NFL acted appropriately in tossing him from the league but too slowly. In January of this year, Alvin Kamara and two others were captured on video viciously beating another man, including hitting and kicking his unconscious body. Kamara continues to play football in the NFL. His trial has been delayed, probably until the off season. The Ray Rice incident had a proper and rapid outcome. It would be nice to think that the NFL was making a statement about domestic violence or violence against women, but the Kamara case tells us we are delusional. The NFL banned Rice because they didn't want the negative publicity. Kamara nearly killing a man is not a PR problem, so he continues to play. .puke

Before tonight......the Yankees were 167-0 in their postseason history entering the 9th inning with a multiple-run lead. Now 167-1 after the great spirited comeback by the-team-that-some-of-us-will-continue-refer-to-as-the-Indians. Tennessee outlasted Alabama earlier today in a simply incredible, instant classic, 52-49. Those 52 points were the most scored against any Alabama team since Sewanee (another Tennessee team; now known as University of the South) rang up 54 on them in 1907, and the third-most ever scored on The Tide. I thought about posting that stat, too, but don't think it's as remarkable as they make it sound. Remarkable, yes. But remember, the playoffs are a relatively recent phenomenon. Thus far fewer chances for such a scenario back when there was just one postseason event (W.S.). Also......with just a plain ol' National League and American League, it was quite a bit harder to have such a 'lead' over the winner of the other circuit. Generally, the respective winners of each league would have won ~90-105 games each, so very rarely could a W.S. have been played with a 22-win disparity. As more teams and divisions got added, of course the chances would increase. But still........the number of teams making the playoffs with 22+ fewer wins than the best record isn't tremendous. To win your division these days, except in extremely rare cases, you're gonna have, say, ~85+ wins. And the best record of all teams participating is gonna be maybe 105-110. So 'opportunities' for a team to beat another with 22+ fewer wins would again be few. Not gonna take the time to look it up, but I would guess even the chance of that happening since divisional play started would be no more than 12-15 times. Purely a guess. Heck, maybe less than 10.

The Yankees, being down 3-0 to the Astros, decided the team need some inspiration. So, they showed the boys some highlights from the 2004 ALCS in which the Boston Red Sox rallied from 0-3 to win the series in seven games. Their choking opponent was the Yankees. Interesting strategy. It turned out kinda similar to 2004 with the Yankees losing a late-inning lead to lose the game and were swept from the series 4-0.

I watched an interesting football game on the tube last night between Central Michigan and Western Michigan. At the outset of the broadcast, snow was falling heavily. The field was covered with roughly 4" of the stuff, and the grounds crews were able to only scrape out an outline of the field along with the goal lines. Everything other marking was completely obscured. The snow was coming down so hard that the players on the sidelines had accumulated about 1" of snow on their helmets. The snow mostly subsided by halftime, and the crews were able to begin removal. However, they exposed a thick layer of ice, and footing was nearly impossible. It was a close and entertaining game. Western won on a late safety and FG, 12-10.

Previous record of NBA teams in the last 20 years when trailing by 9 or more with less than 35 seconds remaining: 0/13,884 - kinda like a climate 10 4x4. Now 1/13,885, as Luka outdoes even 'regular' amazing Luka. This triple double is quite astonishing.

"when trailing by 9 or more with less than 35 seconds" Your link says: "The Slovenian star scored 10 points in the final minute of regulation time and added seven more in overtime to pull off the most improbable of wins. " Is it less than 35 seconds to score 10 points really or about 60 seconds? I remember a game where one team came back from 9 points down (thanks to 3 three-pointers) in the last minute and won the game in the extra time. (IIRC it was USSR against Yugoslavia during Europe or World championship).

Sorry, I don't understand the question. Altho they don't give the score when the Mavs were behind, it was apparently 9 down. And they won the game, so that qualifies as meeting the criteria of the stat - best I can tell. Do you have a typo and meant 60 points instead of 60 seconds? I don't see where 60 seconds is involved. Further...........I suspect they only scored 9 points, not 10, to send the game to overtime. Sorry - I'm missing your point.

Coincidentally................tonight LeBron became only the second in NBA history to score 40 or more in consecutive games after age 35 - the other being MJ.

This oddity is the logical conclusion of the climate of certain team sports in the U.S. Quick background: My son briefly played soccer in high school. He and I realized early on that for him to continue to play, I would have to follow the lead of other parents and kiss the coach's a$$ continually -- invite him over for dinner, pressure our player to bow to the coach's every wish, and God knows what else. I refused to play this game (which was fine with my son because he despised the coach for a host of legitimate reasons). The other parents fawned over the coach, doing what was necessary for their kids to play. The coach called me at home many times with lots of pressure that my son was not falling in line. The coach benched my son for the five of the final six games of the season, despite my son leading the team in scoring by a wide margin, which is rare for a center midfielder. The coach played him in the final half of the last game of the season, and he scored two more goals. That was the last time he played competitive soccer. He changed to distance running where he won a bunch of state honors and a D1 scholarship to a top school. Gratefully, running is based on performance, not politics. My son's case is hardly rare; it is too frequently the norm in high school (and younger) team sports in the US. Naively, I thought this was limited to high school where the kids and parents lived in the same house. It would never carry over into collegiate athletics and certainly not the pro level, right? Wrong, wrong, wrong! The coach of the USMNT is Gregg Berhalter. The team had a reasonable showing in the World Cup despite fielding a very young and inexperienced team. Little did we know that a pair of "helicopter parents" with personal information on Berhalter from decades ago were pressuring Berhalter to give their son more playing time: "Danielle Reyna, wife of former United States men's national team captain Claudio and mother of current international player Gio, says she told U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart about USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter's past domestic violence incident because she was frustrated by comments made about her son after the team's elimination from the 2022 World Cup." That's right, mommy was mad that coach didn't play her baby enough and made some critical comments. During the Cup, she told Berhalter to play her baby or else; he didn't, and she made good on her blackmail. The brief details of the violence incident are that Berhalter kicked his girlfriend in the leg during an argument 30 years ago; they have been married for over 25 years. Domestic violence is serious business, so Berhalter is suspended pending an investigation. How did Mommy Reyna know about this case? Because Berhalter and Daddy Reyna played on the same USMNT for years and roomed together; Mommy and Mrs. B also roomed together. tsk tsk This is isolated to this one strange incident, right? Nope. Emily Kaplan, NHL reporter for ESPN, commented yesterday that this happens all the time in hockey. I would be willing to bet heavily that it occurs frequently in the NBA were the sons of former superstars are beginning to populate the teams. Pardon me while I puke. 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Hitting 40/40 FTs is certainly on oddity - or more properly a unique event. Jimmy Butler (who hit 23 of them) also notched one of those sort of "made up" records by being the first player in NBA history to score 35 or more with 6 or fewer FGs.

Despite his perfection from the FT line, he hit a blistering 6 of 17 from the field. As a team (the home team, btw), Miami had 40 FT attempts compared to 21 for the Thunder; Miami shot 39% from the field compared to 48% for OKC. Those extra 19 FT helped the Heat quite a bit, as did the Thunder's 67% FT shooting. Just another night in the NBA.

Point being it may or may not be exactly still the same figures - but *his* point remains. "For those who think the NET ranking is an absurd metric.......Clemson beat Va. Tech Saturday, for the second time this season. The Tigers are 8-1 in the ACC, while Va. Tech is 1-7. Clemson is #59 in the NET; Va. Tech is #55." Apparently Va. Tech actually leapfrogged over Clemson by losing to them. Clemson stayed the same, while Va. Tech jumped from 61 to 55. That's nuts.

Corollary to the above: FDU (Fairleigh Dickinson) is only in the tournament on a technicality. Merrimac actually won that conference, but because they're still transitioning to D1, they weren't eligible. Beyond that..............they were 4-22 just last year and started the year ranked #355 on KenPom - near the very bottom of all D1 teams. Thus this upset is arguably one of the greatest upsets in sports history. I'm not saying that it is, but it's way, way up there. Also.........FDU has the shortest average height in the tournament. 😯 And according to one report, there are no more intact brackets - with the first round not even over. A bunch of randomly-generated brackets might have done better. 😄

The Disney megaconglomerate announced thousands of layoffs across all their enterprises, including ESPN. Their last round of big layoffs at ESPN had a negative impact on the ESPN product, particularly their reporting staff. They fired competent, big-name personalities and brought in a slew of very young, untalented talking heads. The new recruits who managed to survive and thrive are now a decade older and much better paid. We will likely see another purge of mature talent and an influx of giggling twenty somethings recruited from local tv stations and the internet. (I wonder if Scott Van Pelt, a very popular and highly paid late night Sports Center host, will survive.) I have always wondered why some upstart network has not stepped up to compete with ESPN.
