Chance! Playing the same variant, the chance of getting the same game twice in a row is 1 in 32768, except when you are moving up a level of difficulty -- game numbers (streak lengths) 11, 21, 31, 41 and 51 should never be the same as the previous game, since they come from a different set of games! I suppose there is a remote chance that there could be a level 6 game that is identical to a level 5 game -- it might be 32768^2/52! = about 1 in 1.3E-59!

I have been of the opinion, for a long time, that something more than raw chance is at work in (some of) these cases. I think it happens more than would be statistically expected, but have no explanation or theory - and certainly no proof. Maybe on rare occasions there is a 'stickiness' (how's that for a hi-tech term?) that somehow re-loads a game?
