I play a variant of 8x4, but whereby I DON'T USE the ace places. Is this a known variant?

If I understand your question that would be called 8x4 0 variant. On this site that doesn't exist but there is a 9x4 0 and an 8x4 1. I hope that helps. If not others may chime in.

hotnurse, I don't think you understood his question, and NEITHER DO I! How can you not use the "ace places". On this site, the Aces tend to go to the "ace places" automatically (as do a lot of other cards)! Maybe he meant "freecell places", in which case, he is essentially playing "8x0"??? However, your terminology is a little off: It is not "8x4 0", or "9x4 0", or "8x4 1". They are called "8x0", "9x0" and "8x1"! And, "8x0" actually exists, but has apparently only ever been played by 5 players.

hmmm, the stats for 8x0 level 5 games show about 30,000 have been played at least once, but the five players only account for a couple thousand. anonymous players don't affect the stats so i'm missing something. replays wouldn't explain it either. anyway, looks like about 28 level 5 games have actually been won.

He might mean a game like spider, where the whole object is to pile up a suit without ever playing aces or any other cards up (in spider you only play completed suits.) However this seems incompatible with the alternating color rules of freecell. Maybe you win if you pile up all 4 kings down to ace alternating? Anyway, can't be done with this site's freecell engine.
