Subject: NFL pick'em contest at FC

Joey, you would start at +1, but have ALL games available to pick from, as opposed to our 4-7 games.

I kept posing the question whether to use 0, 1, 2, 3, vs. -3, -1, +1, 3, and it seemed as tho you had decided on the 0, 1, 2, 3. But it doesn't make joining late untenable. Whoever enters late, as you posited, would just be 2 points behind whatever the lowest score currently was. At least I believe that's what you said. That said, it'd be pretty easy to re-calculate (at this early point, pun intended) using -3, -1, +1, +3. And did we/you ever decide how to treat ties? There sure have almost been several of them. Lastly...….what's up with this "y'all" stuff? Endearing, tho. LOL.

you are right... it was supposed to be -1 for missed picks. my bad. I will go back and do the minus for the games. (means I'm sucking even more than before! LOL) well, as far as what was "decided" - there never was a clear confirmation on what the rules were going to be. I was hoping for something more decisive from the peanut gallery, but what ended up was I posted rules, TN made alternative suggestions, and nobody weighed in on those. I had suggested that ties get a zero, and the games are released back to pick from, but if we are doing -1 for loss, and +1 for win, do we even need to? Zero and move on as usual? with the minuses for losses, starting out at -4 from lowest score is more extreme if we are doing -1(loss) to +1(win), but the newcomer will need to have some kind of negative, because he/she has the full array of games to pick from, instead of our 4-7 games. I hope "all y'all" can chime in regarding.... > ties (my new suggestion: zero, games are still removed from picks following 2 weeks) > what is the penalty for late-comers?

Since we're going with the +/- scoring system, the thought occurs to me to ask if it's conceivable that a participant could pick less than 3 picks for a week - to avoid the subtraction of a point. I went back and read "the rules", though, and the very first one says "3 picks" (paraphrased). So I'm not advocating this - just thinking out loud (as it were). Certainly this past week I would have taken that option, and I knew 2 of my 3 picks could go either way. I would still have likely stayed with (either) Ravens over Steelers, OR Atlanta over Cincy, but not both. I actually found myself pulling for the Ravens vs. the Steelers (barely), altho I don't like them either. But...…..these kinds of tough choices were what I envisioned by forcing the contestants to get outside some comfort zone -- and it sure seems to be doing that. And everyone has at least 6 choices this week. Should we tweak the rules to permit picking only two games IF, and only IF the participant has say, less than 6 choices to use? Again, one *could* significantly avoid this problem by looking ahead. I ain't gonna do it; just sayin'. I think I'd vote 'no' on this idea, but I'm just throwing it out there in case the rest of you think it's an enhancement.

Ooop! My bad. I meant Chargers over the Raiders,, which was my only possible pick there. I could not have picked the Niners to win or to lose. So, my three picks were: Saints over Redskins Seahawks over Rams Chargers over the Raiders (At this moment I see the two teams are tied, 3-3, so I am not trying to game the system somehow.)

Ok, here's my latest crazy idea...……. When there's an OT game, instead of the contestant getting a +/-1 (assuming there's a winner in OT), let the contestant have a +/- 1/2. The point being, the teams tied in regulation, so that's about as close as a game can get. Seems 'imprecise' to have that situation be the equivalent of a 40-6 blow-out. Yes, I was the 'victim' of this miscarriage of justice this past week (as was Huffy), but I had actually thought of it before we got the contest rolling; I just didn't post it. "Back in the day" (like, long ago), when I actually bet (truly small amounts of) real money on football, it used to irk me to have a tie ruin what otherwise might have been an excellent parlay card. I don't expect this to get accepted by Rozelle-in-stead, but I'm just running it up the flagpole. Maybe could be used as a tie-breaker at the end of the season?? And yes, I know one could argue that this will even itself out over the season, but I think not; it's just not that common of an occurrence. Kinda like the small, but meaningful gap between 99.3% and 99.7% on 8x4s, for example, just looking for more precision. And yes, I also know that if we'd have added in point spreads, it would have given us that. I came very close to suggesting that, but the logistics of which odds, and at what time, were/are too daunting. And along that same line...…..I mentioned the parity in the NFL a couple of weeks ago, I believe, in the other NFL thread. (I *think* I did.) So, 538's guys have noticed it, too, and have the stats to back it up. [double disclaimer: I do not, at all, use 538's site for help with my predictions, nor do even know if they've been any good this year. That said, I hesitate to post this as other unscrupulous contestants may use it to try and get an edge. LOL]

Nine picks immediately above, and eight of them are identical (meaning picked by all three pickers.) Only pop will be one-up on us or one-down (KC over DEN.) It could be a dogfight at the end, with the two winners having 18 points, then a 17 and a 16. There are a limited number of potential favorites each week, with so many toss-ups. I think next year, we should force a pick on an underdog, or at least reward underdog picks that work out. (Wins)
