Subject: Tournaments as head-to-head

So maybe we could combine the current tournament scheme with the head to head idea. We could consider a head-to-head challenge as a sort of invitational tournament, as opposed to (in addition to) the open tournaments we have now. 1) Somebody would create a tournament and get an id. 2) He would share the id with whoever he wanted to go head-to-head with. 3) Anybody could actually play the tournament if they know the id, but it's the creator who decides the official participants, which means who is listed in the results. He could change the participant list, among all the people who signed up using the id, up to the start of the tournament. This would allow him to share the id on the DB but still limit it to whatever set of people he wanted to head-to-head with. 4) He would be able to set the start and end times, anytime after getting the id but before the start time. The interval could be as long as you like. 5) Presumably the tiebreaker of complete-time would be eliminated, it would just be who won the most, and a tie is a tie. 6) In specifying the tournament, deadly and blind would be selectable for any of the tournament types. I personally think the existing types make a pretty good set but maybe Denny could make more, maybe just a fully parameterized creation choice box. Sound good?

Could be -- but using those ideas could mean that there are 100 or more mini-competitions going on simultaneously. *That* would be seriously complicated.

Yeah. It's up to Denny to say. The big hurdle is whether the software can operate more than one tournament at a time. The difference between 1 and 2 may be immense (or maybe not), but the difference between 2 and a thousand is probably nothing.

Would you be allowed to use a deck of cards in these tournaments?

I sure hope not! Too much work already! On the other hand, it would be nice to have the recognition.

Heh. Here's the thing on that, mister inquisitor sir. These are invitational. So I would expect that people whose playing style the creator disagrees with would not be invited or accepted. If somebody along the same lines invites you, you would not accept. If two or more people all of whose styles you disagree with face off against each other, you wouldn't have to care. That's what I would expect. Of course we have no more protection against clandestine methods than we do now, but maybe there's enough honor that wouldn't happen.

If I understand your question aright, I reply that the fact that in English the pronoun 'he' stands for both 'he' and 'she' even without a constant reminder of that fact, does not offend me nor give me a whole lot of sympathy for those it does offend. While recognizing any opposing view in this matter, I plan to live out the rest of my life and then shuffle off the coil without feeling any offense or guilt.

I can't imagine any situation in which Dede would be excluded from anything, right? (No offense to those others here of that particular persuasion; she would just be an obvious proxy for the question.)
