Subject: Seldom won winnable games.

This one didn't seem too difficult. Was surprised it had only been won once.

Can't figure why ELO's on 8x4 level 8 games with similar % are close to 200 points higher. Same with the next game played 41% game that was about 1500 before I played while similar 8x4 are upper 1600's to 1700's

We likely have the broadest range of individual game ratings in 8x4, because they've been played the most since game ratings started, pushing them higher and lower away from the mean. The other games have a fairly tight range and probably always will.

Guapo, this is why when I’m trying to score elo after a crash, I always pick a climate 9 or 11 or so. Because usually the level 12 has been played a lot and also the level 5 or below, so I don’t get as much elo per win. 

I like that system though, it encourages me to seek out variants and levels of variants that aren’t as often played. 

I agree. It turns out that in most variants the level 7 games were rated most accurately right out of the gate. Levels 5 and 6 were often underrated, and the higher levels were rated higher than they deserved. Level 10 and 12 have mostly come down, so I see the most value in playing levels 8, 9, and 11 usually.

Well done cellmate! Usually I replay such games but with this one I could not contemplate it! One consolation - at level 5 not a lot of play was forfeited!

Thanks seb, I was prepping for todays contest, but that didn't help much. The 10x0 is rough territory. I also had a streak of 9 unnwinnables. For a moment I thought I was playing 8's.

Last Wednesday, this w10x1 game was WAY beyond me!

 I was intrigued by the total plays being so high and looked it up. These are the top 10 for 8x4 level 5. This game is ranked 7th. But how did the top two get to be about double the others?

For interest these are the top five for lowest number of plays in 8x4 level 5.

@Kangaroo, those are some interesting numbers. I'm no statistician, but I wouldn't think that two games could have double the next highest if all games were selected randomly. Not with the volume of total games we're looking at.

thanks. Posting without a game number is kinda useless. I had it there and there then realized I left off the 5 / 83. Then I cut off the even more important part before I posted.

Whoa....   Hard game, but not *that* hard.  Only 'moderately' odiferous:

Once you find the first 3 moves, this game practically plays itsself -- only 37 moves.  But, I'll take it!

Game: 11x0 30978-5;.....  Game stats: 39/2/5.1%/2102;.....  Player Elo: 2315.862 ▲ 1.839.

Moves: 37/90.

Those "first 3 moves" took us probably 40 tries to figure out!

This one was much more difficult (55 moves):

Figured I'd post this because it seemed like an easier than average game for this level 8x3. Must have been a tournament game but was the easiest ELO boost I can recall.

Also, nice win above Tony. Don't think most people would have the persistence or be able to solve some of these even with "help"

another one to add:

Snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! This game was dead and almost buried when I spotted a move which allowed a further move, but still delaying the inevitable, or so I thought. But the diamonds, then the spades cooperated to open the game up!

I've been dealt this infernal game three times since December last year and recognised it immediately because it has all four 2s at the bottom and all aces at the top. A screen shot from December is posted under players' pictures. After winning it the first time I subsequently lost it next time. Today I managed to win it again after recalling what needed to be done. I did not consult the thread mentioning the game in December because I couldn't remember which one it was!

I just got this game in the wwcx competition for today (24/04/2024):

I just encountered this putrid one, also in the WWC, and *ostensibly* climate 6 - but.................not pulling out a deck of cards to cheat..............lost it - just like you did you yours:

These two were enough to decide to not bother with 7x4 today. There were a couple of games between them, but after the second my brain needs a rest.

This one is not as bad as the ones just above, but still worth mentioning, imo:
