Subject: So how do you post a hyperlink

I've searched posts both subject and body and in the FAQ they said to cut and paste into the box at the bottom....there is no such box on mine.

Copy the link to the clipboard.

Type a description for the link or past the link from the clipboard. I assume so far so good.

Now select the text you have typed or pasted. There should pop up a menu. For example you can make it bold or italic or underlined  or

colored or click the rightmost one to paste your link you have already copied to the clipboard.

I'm using a macbook, so it may be different from the operating system you are using.   On the only other message board I post to, I just do a cut and paste and it works. Not sure how to access clipboard on my computer.  I guess didn't understand the instructions that I rec'd after googleing it....it said do "control + command + v" which didn't work for me.  I do appreciate your reply and giving such detailed answers, I guess I will keep reading and trying and eventually i'll accomplish it.  thanks

If you can cut/copy and paste, that should be OK. Forget about the clipboard.

And you can select a text, right? I point the cursor to the start or the end of the text, press the mount button and drag the mouse without releasing the mouse button. Or even click to the start or the end of the text, press and hold shift key and start marking the text with the left/right arrow key. A menu should pop up for you. (At least that's how it works for me)

ChatGPT has this to say for it:

To create a hyperlink using Summernote on a MacBook, you can follow these steps:

  1. First, make sure you are in edit mode within the Summernote editor on the webpage.
  2. Select the text or image you want to turn into a hyperlink.
  3. Click on the "Link" button in the toolbar. It usually looks like a chain link symbol.
  4. A dialog box should appear. Enter the URL you want to link to in the "URL" field.
  5. Optionally, you can specify the target attribute (e.g., _blank to open the link in a new tab).
  6. Click "OK" or "Insert" to create the link.
These steps should allow you to create a hyperlink using Summernote on your MacBook.

The first step should be OK when you are writing a post here.

- How can I select the text or image on a MacBook?

ChatGPT:

Selecting text or images on a MacBook is quite straightforward. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Text Selection:

    • Place your cursor at the beginning of the text you want to select.
    • Click and hold the trackpad with one finger.
    • While holding down the trackpad, drag your finger across the trackpad to highlight the text.
    • Release your finger when you've selected the desired text.
  2. Image Selection:

    • If the image is selectable (for example, if it's embedded within the Summernote editor), you can typically click on the image once to select it.
    • Some web applications may have specific ways of handling image selection, so if clicking doesn't work, you might need to consult the documentation or help resources for that application.

If you're having trouble selecting text or images in a specific application or webpage, it's possible that the application has customized behavior for text and image selection. In that case, referring to the help documentation or contacting the support team for the application might provide additional guidance.

This is how I do it (and unfortunately, Denny, our master and leader, has not seen fit to give detailed instructions on how to do this).......

I think you can even edit your original post with the SRV mention pretty easily.  But I'm not in the Apple universe, so can't say for sure.

First, click on the "Edit your post" thing at the bottom.  Then highlight/select your link that you already posted, and then right click, and TWO menus will pop up, and unfortunately again, they often overlap each other.  So it's like Hop says above, But you have to *find* the correct of the two menus.  One will be, as he notes, all about color choices, etc.  But the other, smaller, linear one has, at the far right of the box, a smaller box with the hyperlink symbol.  Click on that, and then it'll open a 2-choice 'menu' about how to display your hyperlink.  Generally people choose the one that says "open in a new tab".  Do that, then go back to the bottom and click on "update your post".  Hope that does it for you.

You don't have to right click. Upon finishing your selection the menu automatically pops up (as can be seen below).

It's been mysterious to me since Denny initiated this feature.  At first, it seemed like indeed, often it would "turn into" a hyperlink "on its own", but that phenomenon dwindled, and almost never happens now (my experience, at least).  So.....when I post a link from my phone, I have to wait 'til I get on my 'real' computer, and go thru "the process" to turn it into a hyperlink.

I came very, very, very, VERY close to adding "What we need around here is some better mansplanation."  Denny, for all his wonderful talents, and the bells and whistles he's added to this playground, is NOT a mansplainer of all these bells and whistles.  So, no, of course my response is not a mansplantion, 'cause I do *not* know how these things he throws in work.  That's the problem(s).

Alternatively...............................some good womansplanation would work just fine - or perhaps be even better.  Altho womansplanation tends to be in short supply around here throughout this site's history, unfortunately.  IMO.

Womansplanation

When a man who is my friend IRL for @ 40 years so I know him well and he knows me well, starts ordering me around like he is wont to do, I have to remind him that I'm not his personal assistant, nurse, secretary (when he tells me to google something for him) or any of that, and sometimes I have to ask if he has a broken arm, leg, or failing brain. So I think I'm being kind to strangers on the internet when I offer them help that they asked for. But I'm not your search engine.

I didn't know this. Because I never add a link that way. I copy the url, but I don't paste it directly. I enter a description text for the link and then select it using the mouse, a menu pops up and I select the chain option to enter the link details.

Your approach is more elegant and takes full advantage of the software, resulting in a link embedded in text. I greatly prefer reading posts created with the method you describe. I rarely on links that are simply plopped into the textbox with no explanation, no context, or no title.

No, it's not. I post links, in a similar fashion, on multiple other sites, and in emails, etc.  I've *never* encountered this problem anywhere else.

Clearly even Hop, who is quite internet-savvy, didn't know it.  AND...........I just a short while ago I tried to post the link about the new discus record from my phone - and it still did not work as a hyperlink, even when adding a space.  (I came back and edited it on the PC.)  So there's more to it than even that, altho that's apparently more a phone vs. PC issue.

And..........it wasn't me who didn't know what the "clipboard" is.  On top of you being dead-wrong about the hyperlink issue being "instinctual".  Enough.  Go find some other windmills or strawmen to tilt at.

Buzz: "Are your most severe problems while posting on your phone, TN? I seem to recall you saying so."

Yes, by far.  For some reason, I've always been unable to specify a certain amount of text to highlight.  One word, yes.  Or a link, yes.  But not, say, a paragraph or sentence.  Therefore, I cannot call up the 'double menu', one of which is the links manipulations.  And..........as I noted earlier.........*almost* never will a link I post from my phone show up as a hyperlink.  It *has* happened, but very rarely.  And that, as I showed yesterday, is not affected by adding a space after the link.  There is definitely some secret sauce, or combination, to getting all this to work correctly.  But I know, as Denny has repeatedly told us, there are so many configurations of software, hardware, atmospheric pressure, and alignment of planets, that it's hard to get everything all (non-planetarily) lined up at the same time.

Further, to add to some comments others made yesterday about the "dialogue box", and it being "in focus".  I've NEVER seen it out of focus.  But what *is* a problem is that one must put the cursor right in the top left corner of the box in order to begin typing.  When Denny added the capability of doing links this 'new' way, he never told us that not-tiny detail.  I got pretty frustrated trying to post stuff there for a week or so, and somebody (you?) instructed me of that nuance.  How could one be expected to guess that, when heretofore, putting the cursor anywhere in the "box" worked?!?  So........no, that was nowhere near "instinctual", either.  [And NOT trying to open that discussion back up again.  Just documenting another lack of a proper mansplanation.]  But I'm completely unaware of the box ever being out of focus.
