In another thread ScreamingStrat was posting about good guitarists. youtube is amazing for seeing some astounding chops.

Matteo Mancuso is a favorite. Here's Matteo with an older guitarist Al DiMeola.

Al Di Meola & Matteo Mancuso - live @ Eddie Lang Jazz Festival 2022 - Monteroduni, ITALY (youtube.com)

Some more Matteo:

The Chicken - Matteo Mancuso - Riccardo Oliva - Salvatore Lima (youtube.com)

And here's a fun thing from Guthrie:

GUTHRIE GOVAN PLAYS 20 GUITARISTS [+TAB] (youtube.com)

He sounds more like BB than BB does! And I never really appreciated how much of a player James Taylor was.

The Chicken is one of my favorite songs. I have written lyrics for it. I want it as my ringtone, where it goes "We're having chicken". I once ruined a computer trying to make that ringtone.

They are awesome and killer but a bit fast IMO for my chicken taste.

Yeah I'm more moved by guitarists who I think have a unique voice (Santana, Gilmour, Beck, Hendrix) than sheer chops-meisters like Mancuso but you can't argue with the def con 1 level shred.

And while I don't hear a distinct "voice" with Guthrie his ability to mimic others' voices is super impressive. I don't think he got Beck and his Hendrix is a little too technical but his Gilmour was pretty spot on.

Altho I'm aware of 'your' Guthrie (and fully appreciate his abilities), to me "Guthrie" means Guthrie Trapp - who interestingly was profusely praised by Beck (the Jeff one, not the purely "Beck" one), at a show when they were introduced by mutual friend Billy Gibbons.  Not long before Jeff passed away.

Freecell.net seems to have great discussion forums.  The music-related are most interesting as many of the people here seem to have highly-educated insights and opinions into music.  (Well, maybe not surprising because of the known link between music and math in the brain.  And, math aptitude has to be a major factor in freecell solving ability.)

Alas,my math aptitude didn't translate well to music.  I never was one with any musical instrument (piano was closest but still a far miss).  Of course, being male, that doesn't mean I can't have strong opinions on a topic I know little about.  If I was on the psychiatrist's chair playing word association and the prompt is "guitar god", I'm responding "Hendrix".  I'm sure there are other great guitarists, but Hendrix is the only one who invokes the primordial lizard-brain reaction with me.  I like Mark Knopfler quite a bit too.

Knopfler is great, he also has a very distinctive "voice."  He's one of the guys that Guthrie imitates. I think it's a pretty solid compliment that you have a distinctive style if Guthrie decides to do his take on you.

Randy Travis did a Knopfler tune and Randy's guitar player copied Knopfler very closely.

Randy Travis - Are We In Trouble Now (Official Music Video) (youtube.com) (solo starts at about 3:12)

And you can find several of Mark's versions on youtube. He plays the solo different every time.

Ok, no more talk about guitarist, let's see what ya got.  This is something I recorded of me playing five years ago, I'm playing some lead over an SRV backing track :

https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/914104581

Today, I recorded myself doing Voodoo Chile which I was going to post but at present I'm living in a apartment and I can't get loud.  I played it back and you could hear the guitar strings acoustically louder that what was coming out of the amp so not a good recording.  I will try again during the week day when everyone is at work.

Anyway, if you're like me and didn't want to create a YouTube account, I went to vimeo and you can down load three video's for free there.....COME ON don't let me be the only one to post a video of themselves, I don't care if it's you playing the kazoo, whatever you got!!

Here's an older track of mine, me playing a Tele straight into that blackface Fender Bassman:

denniscronin.net/tunes/Dawna/TurnYourselfIn.mp3

Then this is me playing an SG Standard into an Arion clone of a Tube Screamer and I don't remember which amp.

denniscronin.net/tunes/worse.mp3

MusiciansFriend was blowing out those Arion TSs for $13/@.  You can spend $2000 on reverb.com but I'd argue you can't tell the difference in a mix.  The TS circuit is extremely simple.

And that's my brother on drums, he's the real player in the family.

From a non-player but one who is deeply immersed in live music: ScreamingStratocaster's video of his dabbling in blues guitar is fantastic. I would gladly buy a ticket to listen to his work. Denny has great style, too. Far too many people who trot out on stage with guitar in hand really suck at their trade. Denny's cuts are great fun.

Thanks, guys.

I really like Denny's gear. It strikes me as a mini version of J Mascis's "wall of giant speakers" that he sets up at Dinosaur Jr. concerts.
