Here's a list of what this person considered 43 of the most iconic short stories in the English language: https://getpocket.com/explore/item/43-of-the-most-iconic-short-stories-in-the-english-language
Unbelievably "A Christmas Carol" by Dickens didn't make the list (is it too long? maybe belongs in novella category). I never get tired of this story, a true classic. I also watch it every year at Xmas....by the way the best version is the one with George C. Scott as Scrooge, it sticks to the actual written work plus I always liked George and thought he did his usual fine job!
As far as the list goes, I must admit there are some things on here I've never read but I'm glad I have list to go through, I'm sure I've missed out on some great reading here. I'd also be interested in the some short stories you like that didn't make the list or ones on the list you really love. One of my favorite short stories is "the Pension Grillparzer" which is included in the book "The World According to Garp"...it's a mind blower and funny too!!
Very interesting article. Good to see an O. Henry selection in this list but I was hoping for "The ransom of red chief" instead. That was my Mom's favorite.
I'd also have to bump something off to get Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" in there.
