For an interesting story, google on this guys name. He attached weather balloons to a chair and got up to 16,000 feet over Los Angeles. I've looked at quite a few sites, including urban legends, and this seems to be true.

This may be the best link to follow. It is from the Darwin Awards web site which contains lots of other amusing stories. In particular, an entry from 1995 with a military JATO device is pretty amazing. Anyway, the link is: http://www.darwinawards.com/ and you can do a search on "Larry Walters" or "lawn chair" to call up the story (which is from 1982).

the problem with the Darwin awards is that they are sometimes a hoax, the lawn chair and balloon story is for real.

Roo, You must have started with Mythbusters late they have done that. They had all sorts of problems getting there but eventually did. Keeping the lawn chair stable was a major issue. They needed 55 weather baloons and just about all the helium in the San francisco area. I only picked them up at first by accident as they came on before South Park. huffy

Yes huffy. I've only been watching it for a few months. One of the early ones I saw was about trying to lift a toddler high in the air with many helium filled balloons - the ordinary type - a la Mr Bean at the fair.

After I hit send I realised that you might not be watching them on the same channel as me. Mythbusters is on 7.30 Monday nights on SBS and then included somehow as part of Channel 7’s Beyond Tomorrow. With Channel 7 no longer having any live sport coverage and me finding their programming of absolutely no interest I have not watched 7 for quite some time and was not aware that they were also running some Mythbusters. When they had the Mythbusters Jaws / Shark busting show just before Jaws I was surprised to see Mythbusters appear in the column for 7 and thought “Oh great another good show that one of the commercial networks has grabbed from the govt stations, they will wreck it making room for the ads” As I hadn’t seen the shark mythbusters I watched it and found in the ads that Beyond Tomorrow was including Mythbusters in their show. My boss at work had seen Mythbusters on 7 but not on SBS. Often I think I am the only one in Australia that watches SBS prior to 10pm. (Non-Australians wouldn’t understand that comment but Australian’s would ;-)) After the shark mythbusters they mentioned what they would be mythbusting in the next Beyond Tomorrow and I had seen that show quite some time ago so I assume that 7 is running well behind SBS with the shows.

It was on SBS that I first saw it - the American Graffiti chain on axle one. Like you, I didn't know it was on channel 7 until the shark episode, which I also saw. My sons and I are now hooked on the program and watch it every Monday night. I rarely watch anything but SBS, not that I watch TV a lot anyway.

Might we be correct in assuming that SBS features "adult" (talk about a misnomer!) programming after 10pm? (When the kiddies have presumably already gone to beddy-byes?) Just wundrin', huffy. By the way, it is very discouraging to me how the "lowest common denominator" just gets lower and lower in the programming intended to "entertain" and titillate the public. And the public just keeps eating it up. (Not just the progression of adult programming, but also mainstream movies, fiction and non-fiction books, video games, the list is endless.)

Is it true that Larry Walters goes 16,000 ft up over L.A. and he comes down in L.A? Shouldn't he be blown way out of L.A.? That's like 4 miles up...Can he steer his lawn chair? A LaZboy would have been better, it's heavier and it reclines. He might of accomplished the planned height of 30 feet above his backyard.

Fellow Netcellers, The way I got the story was, that The inventive Mr.Walters realized he needed to come down(what goes up must........) at some point in his aerial excursion, so he armed himself with a BB gun to shoot out some of the baloons above his chair and thus achieve negative bouancy. While not debating the advisability of shooting over an urban environment (what goes up........, applies to BBs also), suffice it to say that it beacme a moot issue when Larry dropped the gun. And thus he rode off into the sunset. Uncle Hanibal

I enjoy the Mythbusters program a lot, too. I think they've generously expanded their criteria for "myth" because they've already done most of the well-known urban legends that can be done, but I still enjoy their choices of experiments. I was a little disappointed at first when they started regularly using "mythterns" to do about half the show while the main guys - Jamie and Adam - do the rest, but I find I enjoy those parts of the show, too. The science is interesting, if not terribly rigorous, and I never stop enjoying Adam's talent for inflicting accidental pain on himself, while avoiding any injury serious enough to make it not funny.

Snowguy, SBS is officially Australia's Ethnic Broadcaster (movies and some other shows are in languages other than English). It seems that often those international movies have a sexual content, certainly not hard core but for years was more explicit than other Australian stations. Sadly many Australians just have that image of the channel and dont even consider it as a viewing option. Now days it has probably the most unbiased news we get in Australia with naturally a very high international news content. It has been getting an every increasing amount of live sport and as its a government backed station there are no ad breaks. They do have ads but its at the end of shows. The station also has a lot of very interesting documentaries. When you tell people you were watching SBS the assumption is you were watching for sex. Since Australia got pay TV (which i dont have) the quality of free to air TV has crashed the majority is mindless drivel as a result my TV doesnt get much use unless there is a major sporting event on. I do watch Mythbusters as they have so many interesting myths like Larry Walters that they cover. Have to confess i do like Simpsons and South Park (if its going to be mindless should be funny with cartoon characters some of those other cartoon ones believe they are funny but i dont agree)

That's news to me, that SBS watchers were equated with being pervs. It's not a perception from others that I ever gained. I know what you mean though huffy. Many programs would never be seen on commercial TV. I started watching SBS seriously when Drop the Dead Donkey was running, over 10 years ago.

Here is a duo of reports on Larry The Truck Driver; one for children learning lots o stuff, including carefulness in adventuring no doubt! Plus, within the page there is a link ("Here is a short documentary video about Larry's flight, by Ted Fisher") to the story as told by one of Larry's friends. All looks real to me. ADVENTURE, a good word to counter "fear of failure". Did the experiment succeed? YES, as an experiment it went in nicely surprising directions, but it was a grand success. Was it safely done? YES, as safely as could be figured out in advance within the monetary and time "restrains" or "parameters". Did he need a doctorate to help us all learn something useful? NO, but he definately qualifies for an honorary doctorate for his useful research, done at his own expense. Should teachers everywhere consider using this science page for their own classes. :D Hallel u YA, for His mercies endure Forever! Coronella

So, two clicks wasn't how the glitch happened. Mystery. Signing out. [Oh. Info on me once asked for: <coronellakeiper@ yahoo.com> for an email contact point, _assumed_ wanted by a few. Sorry I haven't a scanner or current picture of me to post on the pics page, which was asked for. I'm approximately 5'1" to 5'2" depending on whether I have been exercising; 58+ years into life; blue eyes that change colors/tones depending on whether I've had water, milk and o.j. or to much coffee for several days, and whether I've had enough sleep; flab and water logging probably 15# - 25# total, but of the sort that passes for healthy by those who don't know how to notice water logging; body weight about 120# - 130# (depending, again, on caffeination levels and also vegetables and fruits versus no vegetables and no fruits for several days.) Hair: Long, mostly a lovely white but still with some brunette, but with a receded hairline [from once when I tried to pray for a group of others to have an easy time while God turned them back to choosing His will. They were "baptised in the Holy Spirit", tho, so weren't the clueless of the earth, and God did not like my attempt to pray for the willfully rebellious to have an easy physical time(!) -- I have repented, but so far the hairline has been very slow to get right again.] My hair is currently, visually, interesting -- as it is currently hidden by a dark grey winter cap which when wet is lovely for evaporative cooling when walking in 90 degree heat, and also allows strangers to feel comfortable leaving me alone unless they have the capacity to look deeper than simplistic appearances. {: :D Usually seen with a black book-bag style "back pack" of the no-hip-belt variety. I'm planning on going up to 67th and Atlantic here in Virginia Beach, and using the third floor's Meditation Room at the A.R.E. for several days or weeks or until something good drops on me. I am planning on just checking email (see above) once a week; and of continuing to go to Virginia Beach Community Chapel on Sundays, especially as I like the "Sunday School" Missions group. It is called the Acts 1:8 class, and the good news from around the globe is nicely balanced by both short term and long term missionary requests for prayer. People at the chapel have chipped in to buy the equipment and send some folks to sweat in the middle of a jungle to put in a cistern that would actually continue to hold water, and to lay the pipes to the long way off cascading stream. The village had been trouping for two hours a day down and up a steep hill to get as much water as could be carried by hand!! Pictures, testimonies of chapel members' lives changed,.. I like. (But I don't like their web page, so won't give it. Its not the best web page i've ever seen, and it doesn't even remind me of the place or most of the people there.) Interesting happenings in this thread besides the flight of Larry Walters. (But then anything ix originates is usually interesting.) The thread sits dormant for 10 years and TNmountainman decides to post. We also have a post by birdhaus. She was a big-time poster for quite a while, but has been dormant herself for years. And then we have an appearance by CoronellaKeiper, another poster from way back. I remember Coronella as keeping us abreast of God and golf. But my favorite tidbit in here is that one of my favorite streakers, lightning-fast Huffy, watches, or at least used to watch, South Park. I love useless information like this about folks I admire.

i'm just gonna throw this in: if you EVER get the chance to see jamie and adam live....DO IT. i took hubby last year for his b'day...we had a blast. it was relevant, funny, and worth the price. as to worthless tv...by the end of august, all we will have at home are netflix, amazon prime (of which i've been a member forever), and hulu. between those 3 (which, b/t/w, cost me about 10% of what my sat tv bill is) and on demand from my fave channels (tcm, et al)...we will save almost $100/mo...and not have to turn the channel to find "honey boo boo" or some such crap!
