Frankly, StupaPlinth, this board is pretty dead for myself. Talk of solitaire bores me. Ratings, sports, resident and visiting trolls, all bore me. There are corona virus threads that got trashed and deactivated. You can still find them but I'm pretty sure can't post on them.

No we don't fit in...at all. But that's the point for me. I came back to express my appreciation for this board and these users. I learned so much about the art of argument here. And it is an art, debate is an art. I learned new words and new ways to use them here, from maab and that whizkid in Baltimore. Words like venom, acrimony, rancor, miasma, pique, anathema, pernicious, bête noir, vitriolic, caustic. I learned the term "strawman argument" and I can recognize them when listening to politicians and their supporters (ehem Jim Jordan) to this day. When I listen to an interview with a politician, I can recognize the dodges, the deflections, and when a politician "leads" the interview and the interviewer. The higher in office, the better they are, including world leaders and charismatic dictators/authoritarians. Thirteen or so years ago, when we were arguing about the morality of the US using torture, if waterboarding is torture, during the Dubya Bush administration, some here were actually in favor of it. Who would admit to that today? This was the only place where I could really get in with Vietnam vets, why they fought, I've never really understood them, being a pacifist and coming from a Christian peace background and education and having Vietnamese relatives born in the North. It is only when I stepped away from here that I realized what I had learned, I didn't see it when I was in the thick of it. I realized it when I went onto other discussion boards and I could see I was more sophisticated, a better writer in that I could express my viewpoint directly, concisely, and humorously (albeit biting) in the comment forum provided by Washington Post. I've even had direct communication with the journalists that wrote the piece. When I look back on those years, I have no resentment, just grateful to all of you who help form my opinions. I know Denny had a hard time and my apologies but now it seems like a perfect storm for me, the forces that came together at that time, this place. And to maab, I just want to say, "I am in the right, then and now." because of you, lol, lotsalove moo.

Very eloquent, StupaPlinth. Most (but, gratefully, not all) of the big thinkers and interesting folks have moved on. A few remain and make this place far more palatable than, in the words of our fearless leader, "other places where you could discuss this."

I used to be in charge of programming, well, for one program anyway. I got my start way before Mr Microphone (which would be a damn good screen name if we were no longer limited) as a nine year old selling cards and gifts on air as the child's voice for a AM radio station, which is why I know so much about boomer memory joggers. Here's one and it's...

They don't put doilies on muscle cars and hogs, the proper terminology is pinstripe. I had a buddy back then who really went overboard, he had his name painted in cursive on the side. Not something I'd do but still you got to admire a steady hand.

I've got to say, I've probably done 100s. As an old school sign painter, our proper terminology for "cursive" is "script". And I know a bit about pinstripe. Most script names under the window I did were on race cars or semis. The Steadiest Hand
