Here's a pair for you: Janis Joplin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApfKglyNjyA Faith Hill http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=faith+hill+piece+of+my+heart&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 The Faith Hill version is way too sweet and upbeat for my taste. It doesn't begin to have the emotional impact of Janis' version. I csn't remember the source of this song, think both are covers. Guess I'll have to did out my old "Cheap Thrills" vinyl and check the credits.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Make it stop! Sweet jeebus, that was awful. That makes "Rick Roll" seem like hard-edged. (Janis would find it amusing.) The original was by Erma Franklin in 1967. Her version is similar to Joplin's, but Big Brother and the Holding Company sent it through the roof. Joplin's interpretation was edgier and more soulful than the original. I found it on Rhapsody; you can also listen to a lower quality reproduction on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAErTuWXG6U

Tnx, Buzz, saves me digging through some dusty boxes. I like the Erma Franklin version, but I agree - Janis is edgier and there's a lot more anguish in it. Speaking of covers - Here's another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQSe2mYOlbE&feature=related In the same vein as Franklin. Probably #2 spot, IMO. And another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlyWO-jEjhw&feature=related I think she may be trying too hard to sound like Janis. I sort of like it though. And another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM_4NR_Oee8&feature=related And another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljawxIsM8Rs&feature=watch_response Any Pink fans? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55OPeF3vyN8&feature=related Another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcnYOXhpzwI&feature=related No comment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thkr2jzkoIE&feature=related and many more.... I think Faith Hill's is the worst of the lot, or at least next to last.

It's working now. My son (a musician) loved Tenacious D when he was around 14 years old. I'll have to ask him what he thinks now. Jack Black's wide-eyed goofiness in that video is very much the same character he played in Shallow Hal. Maybe that's the real Jack Black.

The first version, close to what the composer intended, is performed by Orquesta Sinfonica R.T.V. Espanola. Narcisco Yepes, using his 10 string guitar, is the soloist. One can see an obvious advantage to this guitar around 7:15.

The second version is Miles Davis interpretation of the Concierto. My first experience with this piece of music was by the MJQ. I didn't realize that it was originally written for quitar until I heard it at our local symphony in 1992 or 1993.

Hm. So, an Aussie band called the Rock Lobsters is some sort of tribute for the B52s, and they do a cover of Stairway to Heaven in the style they assume the B52s would have use had they covered Stairway to Heaven. Alrighty then. Since we're in the mood, follow the link to Amazon.com and listen to the samples of a variety of talent-free folks who have covered Stairway to Heaven. My favorite is the one who tries to channel William Shatner's talky-singy thing. Leave your musical taste at the door.

Here is a cover for the one above. This is from Șatra în Asfințit which literally means 'tribe into the sunset'. These people are the 'Țigani' that are largely in Romania but can be found in other FSU countries as well. And, Yes, they are same people known as the Roma in western Europe. I enjoy this music very much BTW.

No idea what Ice Cream for Crow was supposed to be. The Zappa link was merely another link to the Beatles imitators. Here's the link to Zappa's cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1vfGoy4-Rs As for cântec: muzică ţigănească -- Borat might find this to be a real toe-tapper, but he prefers to hit gypsies "very hard" with an SUV.

Sorry about the wrong link. Ice Cream for Crow is one of Captain Beefheart's (aka Don Van Vliet) original numbers. Very interesting and influential musician, always too edgy for most. There are some cover bands running around, again largely unknown. One name brand cover I know of is "Peon," a guitar solo number covered by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Tip o'the hat to Dr. Bombay and luxfero getting us back on track. One of my kids was totally into Marilyn Manson. ew. This video portrays him doing a fusion of Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas while apparently under the influence of opium or lysurgic acid diethylamide. As for Neil Diamond, I was clueless that he wrote Red Red Wine. Two points for Neil, who seems to like singing about wine. His Cracklin' Rosie is my favorite song of his. (I am amused how some of the dorks posting responses to Diamond's Red Red Wine on YouTube are under the impression that the reggae version of Red Red Wine was performed by Bob Marley. snicker)
