Hey, ain't no thang. It's not like I've never missed anything. I just wish I had more time to explore your musical suggestions. But...........................in that vein...... Check the "NFL again" thread for your post: "In an interesting bit of news......", then backtrack to the previous day where Snowguy had already initiated that train of thought. We're all human. Except Denny.....and maybe mickyiw and/or CubicSprock. And mrbuck, of course.

TN, not that it matters either, but sorry that I didn't remember your post about Parker Milsap. I accidently ran across him through a friend here who told me to check out The Devil Makes Three and I found him through that link. No matter...he is great and I haven't heard anything he's done that I didn't like. You are lucky to have seen him live!

Since I know Buzz likes Tedeschi/Trucks (well, especially Tedeschi), then I'll note that Parker is opening for them at the Ryman in two weeks. Sold out. Quite the feather in his cap to be on the bill with them already. He's also playing at the big "Forecastle" festival in Louisville, hottie, in July. Better to see him in a small club, methinks, although I suspect that may not be possible much longer, if at all now.

What different musical worlds we inhabit! I had never heard of Sam Smith until tonight. (Note again that I haven't even skimmed the surface of most of this thread, but I still hope to get in deeper one of these days.) I haven't watched the Grammies in over 20 years, I'm sure (except maybe tiny tidbits by 'accident'), but for some reason I had the tv on that channel ("60 Minutes"?) when they came on, so I just sort of kept it on as background for most of the show, watching more than listening - to see what all kinds of stuff they be doin'. I couldn't tell you who won what, or even what the categories are now. But....that said.....my observations (as if....) are that popular music these days is as much about dancing (more choreography, really) as it is singing. And the singing seems more about having a good voice than being creative (and I know that's a serious generalization, but still....). I don't doubt that some of the performances were great, or at least fine, but it just doesn't seem to be about "THE MUSIC" in the last 20-30 years [cue anybody's parents saying almost the same thing, I know.....]. I know there's honest, sincere, quality music being made these days (and I'm sure there's some in this very thread I've yet to discover), and perhaps there was even some on that show, but it didn't appear to me to be mostly along those lines. "Personalities" and "personas" have overtaken the "music" in terms of importance (supposedly, if the media had/has their way) - and I find that very sad. When such events are more about what someone is wearing, or what actions they did (apart from purely performing), then we've all lost, whether we know it or not. Notice I'm not going to mention any names, but all this personality-driven 'entertainment' industry is so far far far away from good, quality, sincere, meaningful musical expression as one can get - allowing for, I'm sure many exceptions. "Rolling Stone" fell long ago; I guess it's just the way the world works..... End of soapbox sermon. Sorry.

Sam Smith's time as an indie performer lasted about a minute. From about the time I posted his music here to when I went to the fridge for a something to drink, he exploded into the pop scene. It's not every performer who, without buying a new calendar, goes from completely unknown to being sued for by Tom Petty for ripping off his music. I have very little interest in "dance" music or those who spend a lot of time choreographing dances for their songs. St. Vincent remains an indie idol. She has done the circuit a lot of indie performers take to get exposure and make a living -- Letterman, Saturday Night Live, endless radio interviews -- but remains true to the music. (Her biggest fans read with amusement when SNL viewers called her SNL performance a "trainwreck;" it was St. Vincent at her finest and out of reach for many.) I have never watched the Grammy Awards show. I assume it's like the others ... that I also don't watch.

Well Buzz, I *do* like to watch the Grammy's, mostly because I like to see fashion and I like a bit of drama once in a while. I enjoyed seeing ACDC do the opening performance. I liked watching Lang Lang accompany Pharrell with Happy. I liked watching Sir Paul on stage along with Rihanna and a-hole Kanya do a number and I also like Ed Sheehan. I do think that the awards are a farce when it comes to who deserves what in music. I, personally, find you to be more of the resource for new music.

It seems that I'm in some sort of music gyre. Good songs keep spinning around in front of me until I acknowledge their presence. hottie clued me in that my reluctance to watch the Grammys was my loss, and she hinted why. Anyway, I was walking through some store (Walgreens?), and a song came on that really caught my ear. I had not heard it before, and I really like it. It had hints of Bonnie Raitt/Little Feat with a touch of Susan Tadeschi for flavor. I quickly opened Shazam, and was standing slack jawed at what I was being told. This was Rihanna, Kanye, and McCartney singing FourFiveSeconds -- debuted at the Grammys. Holy crapoli. I really, really wish I had seen that live. But, below is a link to the performance. Tick one up for hottie... on my own thread. Damn.

Well, I saw it, and don't know what the fuss is about. It *was* an interesting confab, but I couldn't get into the music of it at all. I will agree that Rhianna does sound a tad bit like Bonnie (sans slide, unfortunately), or Tedeschi, but I fail to hear any Little Feat in there. Obviously I can't know this, but I have a hard time imagining Sir Paul being gung-ho about that whole thing. Not that he would ever admit to that. Sheer speculation on my part. His lyrical contribution probably consisted of: "Then I heard you was talkin' trash Hold me back, I'm 'bout to spaz. I'm FourFiveSeconds from wildin' And we got three more days 'til Friday I'm tryna make it back home by Monday mornin'." LOL. I had never heard of this "Shazam" (other than a pretty darn good, off-and-on rock 'n' roll band around here, preceded by "The"). But I see that it's a music-identification service. Great idea. Too bad it's an app, but that's another story. Many times in the past that capability would have been nice to have; I really learned something there. Amazing that that works. Further, I had never heard of Ed Sheeran, either, but I *did* like what he did. To me, that was about the only music on the show I truly liked (with the disclaimer that I didn't pay full attention much of the time). Even though it's not real close, somehow he was reminiscent of Simply Red, although (imo) not as good.

From New Albany, Indiana yet (a fact I did not know until I started digging). They formed about 4 years ago just across the Indiana border from Louisville. They've managed the usual tour of Letterman, Conan, World Cafe. They have gotten the attention of Dodge of My Old Kentucky Blog, which is where I encountered them. I'm Ready...loved the photo clips and I think I saw Bruce Jenner back when he really was Bruce. Also, I swear I saw Yo Yo Ma and Mr. Rodgers...? I loved this music with the video. Sufjan...loved the acoustic guitar; reminded me of the guitar in Family Of The Year's tunes. Thanks guys, that was well worth the time. From the "Was this necessary?" department: 1) Scarlett Johansson has formed a group of decent artists (though not necessarily playing their best instruments) and released an album of pop songs. Sort of dance, electronic glop. Loves me some Scarlett Johansson, but, no. (If you really want to hear this, Google "Scarlett Singles" -- Singles is the name of the band) 2) Win Butler, the super tall guy from Arcade Fire, also DJs under the name of DJ Windows98. Okay. Whatever. But, as an homage to the Grammy Awards, he put together a mashup of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and Beck's "Loser". This piece has no value other than the fact that it exists.

In stark contrast to my post immediately above, we have this: A brand new group is releasing a new album, and their first single was debuted by Pitchfork late last week. The group is called Pfarmers and is a collaboration of pivotal members of Indie, iconic groups: Danny Seim of Menomena, Bryan Devendorf of The National, and Dave Nelson who has toured with St. Vincent, David Byrne, The National, and Sufjan Stevens. Some of the motivations behind the music are given in the Pitchfork article. Here's a link to the Pitchfork review: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20218-carrie-lowell/ The album centers on the death of Stephens's mother, and many of the songs chain you to his misery and drag you through the dirt. This is a remarkable masterpiece by Stephens. "Fourth of July" is an emotional tour of his mother's death through the eyes of his stepfather. Following the trend started by "Kasimir Pulaski Day," beware of Sufjan songs with holidays for titles -- they will leave you in tears.

^^^[Sufjan's album opened at #7 for the week on Billboard. Lofty stuff for a guy who is indie to the core and never courts commercial attention.] A song from St. Vincent popped up this week that's been around for some months but escaped my attention until today. Apparently is was background for the credits at the end of an episode of Girls (a tv show I don't know). This is a nice tune from Annie, but certainly not typical of her style. The absence of her guitar leaves me anxious. Normally, I don't like posting videos for a song, but this one is different. This song is a departure for her, and the performance on Fallon just feeds into that. The choreography for her (as simple as it is) is new to me, but apparently there was lots of dancing in her latest tour. And, she has radically changed her look. When I saw St. Vincent perform in Chicago a couple of years back, a number of the Northwestern boys kept chirping, "Marry Me, Annie!" which I assumed to be a request for the song from the album with the same title. The more I watch her, the less I'm convinced that's the case.

My trip to Indy. Part I. Kero Kero Bonito. So, last weekend was a big one for me. I traveled to Indy to visit my son over a quick weekend. I flew in "after" work (I was no longer working when I left for the airport, but it was not quite quittin' time). We had a nice dinner at one of his favorite restaurants in the artsy district of Indy, and then we went to his house, that he shares with a couple of other musicians. Both of them are guitarists for bands I've put up on this thread; both are scary smart and deep into their music. While my son finished of some cover art for one of the albums he's producing, I had a really interesting talk with the roomies. The conversation went immediately to music we like and hate, and the we landed quickly on Kero Kero Bonito. I told them I initially found them revolting and self-possessed, but their more recent projects have left me confused. Their style has changed, the lead singer suddenly developed a British accent, etc. I confessed to suspecting that I was missing something really important, and there seems to be a lot going on under silly pop facade of the tunes. The two were initially curious how an old b@stard like me would even know who they are, but moved quickly to explain what was going on. Officially, Kero Kero Bonito is a project by two producers and a fronting vocalist. But, that's boring and improbable and likely to be untrue. Reality lies closer them being an art project by a collective of musicians -- all talented, some famous -- who take a morbid pleasure in producing mass quantities of ultra pop music, likely underneath the amorphous shroud of PC Music. KKB showed up at SXSW and put on an infectious show that all those in attendance praised endlessly. I am getting the impression that the touring group is something of spinoff of the Milli Vanilli concept, though the diehard fans aren't buying it. The fans are convinced this is the real deal. Mkay. I'll never buy any Kero Kero Bonito music, but I have new found respect for a group that can pull this off. The boy and I went to see "It Follows", an odd sort of art flick bundled as a teen horror film, which I discussed on another thread.
