You guys didn't realize that this thread was turning into some sort of awesome indie music blog, did you? I gave you the review of St. Vincent, and she's blowing away audiences everywhere, including stints on late-night teevee. I talked about how Cloud Nothings is starting to make rumblings, helped by the Rolling Stone interview -- and the fact that I put $10 in their "cookie jar" after their gig. After I helped launch her career right her at Freecell.net, tUnE-yArDs gets record of the year (see link below). Awesome! I like this quote from the link: "The album 'who kill' by tUnE-yArDs was just named record of the year by voters in the 2011 Pazz & Jop poll. I'm guessing this doesn't mean much to more than (maybe) 10,000 people in the entire country. In fact, if you effortlessly understood 100 percent of this article's opening sentence, you can probably skip the rest of the piece." Well, I read the opening sentence with a cheer, and I should have skipped the review. (It is a bit critical because he doesn't like the style and he had never heard of her. So, why did he write the review?...) Anyway, it is my pleasure to keep you up to speed on the new and exciting, albeit obscure, music in the indie scene. By the way, my son will be releasing two new EPs in the coming weeks. He plays with two different groups who coincidentally decided to record. Exciting stuff!

This is not brand new, but today I heard a few of the cuts from the latest Fleet Foxes album, and I thought I'd share them. The first is Helplessness Blues http://youtu.be/KyP0DACgdgc , which is a typical Fleet Foxes song. Lots of harmonies, sort of a resurgence of folk rock. Lorelai http://youtu.be/CVyLukxXKIc is a great song about a relationship. They remind me of some of the groups from the 70s with a similar sound. My sons had the fortune to see them in concert in a bar a couple of years back. One of my kids love them and was hyped about the concert. The other kid (who prefers "hair bands") was not happy and was loudly complaining about how he was stuck in some greasy dump having to listen to the likes of the Fleet Foxes, at which time the lead singer turned around and apologized for his misfortune. Hee hee!

A recent sensation occurring behind the scenes is Lana Del Rey. She has popped up on the internet, though she certainly has not quite gone viral. She has also made something of a bimodal splash on various indy music outlets: one of the most popular indy music bloggers, "Gorilla versus Bear," stated that the most amount of hate mail he receives during his weekly two-hour stint on XMU (Sirius/XM station 35) is when he plays her music. Lana Del Rey does nothing for me simply because I find her ordinary and boring. I chafe a bit when they play her on XMU because it is abundantly clear that she has the single focus of launching a pop career. Her songs are heavily produced, and the sound is much too clean for the taste of the run-of-the-mill indy music devotee. It's not a big deal, and it happens every now and then. Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend certainly benefited from their indy following before making pop inroads. I have avoided posting anything about Lana Del Rey here because she is not interesting to me. That is, until she made her television debut on Saturday Night Live. I was pretty stunned to hear that SNL would risk putting a live mic in front of a performer who, as far as I know, has never had a big tour and has yet to release her first album. Her performance on SNL was gawd awful. She was off key, throaty, incessantly wiggling nervously, playing with her hair, missing musical cues, and generally horrible. This is why you play basements for a couple of years, then small though real venues, then gymnasiums, and finally big gigs before you roll the dice on live television. What a mess. (See the review and links to her SNL performance below). I have no doubt that those haters who sent poison pen emails to Gorilla vs Bear were delighted to see her crash and burn. I feel sorry for her and hope that both she and SNL learned an important lesson.

Ever hear of this one? I heard the song first by a group that evidently put a vid on youtube that had gone viral... I never saw the vid (until yesterday when I went looking), but they were on the Ellen Show, 4 ppl playing one guitar. I liked the song, and yesterday I heard it on the radio twice, so searched for it. Well, come to find out, it was a group of friends doing someone else's song. The "imposters" were Walk Off the Earth, doing a song by Gotye. (Goh-tee-ay) On the Ellen Show, Walk Off the Earth all got Fenders - one for each.

I just checked their website and actually there bio is quite impressive. The name *is* pronounced "mouse", named in part for a dead mouse that Joel Zimmerman found in his computer and changed to deadmou5 for entrance into a chatroom. Guess I need to give it a serious listening but doubt if it would be something I would download.

A fun group that has been out for a little while is Tennis. It's a husband and wife duo from Denver, and they have quite the following on the indie circuit. They are creative with something of a pop sound, but they do not pursue the pop scene or pop audiences. They have a sound that is similar to St. Vincent but not the edge. Tennis is really easy on the ears with Alaina Moore doing all the vocals and Patrick Riley providing a lot of the creative drive as well nice guitar work. They just released their sophomore album, called "Young & Old". The song "Origins" is receiving a lot of air time on the indie radio channels (http://youtu.be/Qapnomk2sys), but "Deep in the Woods" is the only official music video I can find. The video is definitely interesting. I downloaded their album from Rhapsody, and it's very relaxing. A solid thumbs up, but don't expect this to be a challenging selection.

Korean new music. The younger generation is really into romantic ballads...first generation to grow up in the post-arranged marraige culture. Cloud Nothings are really catching the attention of a lot of folks. Here's an interview by ABC. It also has a link to a video of the second oddest song that Cloud Nothings played when I saw them. "No Future/No Past" is not a song you will be humming on the way to work in your car. It could, however, be the soundtrack to one of your nightmares.

Yesterday evening, I saw a new HP laptop commercial that featured the Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun." I was pretty amused by this, but it also is dynamite advertising. The new laptop is supposedly designed specifically for music, and true music freaks really appreciate the song they've used. As I began scouring the interned for the ad and a YouTube video to show "Blister in the Sun", I quickly discovered that I was not the only one so taken. Click the link below to see the commercial and a live version of the song from a long time ago. (this post, although about a HUGE indy band, really doesn't belong here, being old music and all. sorry for that)

The Violent Femmes are still iconic among the indy crowd and others. If you get a venue full of hipsters and the guitarist plays the opening riff from "Blister in the Sun", the crowd will answer by clapping out the drum response. However, playing the entire song apparently is a violation of a sacred covenant among hipsters. A few indy anthems must never be covered. Arcade Fire got a taste of this when the dared to cover "This Must Be the Place" by Talking Heads. (Scene from recent movie: KID: Can you play "This Must Be the Place" by Arcade Fire? CHEYENNE (Sean Penn): You must be delusional. "This Must Be the Place" is by the Talking Heads.
