I really enjoyed coming in 1st yesterday, with about 5 minutes to spare. Just for fun, I looked up the game that ended Mastermind's streak: 396/8. It was a little tricky, but not terribly difficult, imo (it is now 1/2). If Mastermind had won it, then he would have come first, because I would have considered him out-of-reach. I would not have sacrificed an hour of sleep just to tie. It's all in a day's play...

I meant to play the WWS yesterday but due to odd circumstances I was off routine all day.
But, my main comment here is that I had figured that being a W9x2 the high score would be much more than just a 36. Either there were a lot of not-yet-won level 5 games or I am just not that familiar with the 9x2.

Thanks Kathy! Just because in the "winnable" variants, all of the games are winnable, doesn't mean that they are *easily* winnable! "Just a 36"??? My average w9x2 streak is 19.6, so 36 is pretty good, imo. I try to play carefully (patiently and studiously), but I still lose a lot of winnable games!!

Further to my comment above, I have sometimes thought that, instead of scoring "top down", it would be more fair to score "bottom up", which would mean that some (or all) of the bonus points at the top would be lost, whenever there wer < 25 players. The ideas are 1) if you don't beat as many players, you don't get as many points, and 2) it would eliminate getting lots of points for small streaks! Here is a little table showing the difference it would have made yesterday (the top 6 scores = 3350 = 41.36% of the points would not have been given, instead of the bottom 6 scores = 525 = 6.48%):

The problem with all of this is that some bright spark will play with multiple nics, just to get the participation up to 25, so maybe I have wasted my time here! Maybe making the scores proportional to the length of the player's streak would work, and would give extra points for the better streaks! Comments anyone, or any alternative scoring suggestions???

Here is what yesterday's scores would have looked like using "Proportional Scoring":
The Proportional Score for Darkosi is = 6000*33/217 = 912.4! For Brandeau, it is = 6000*3/217 = 82.9.
If Darkosi's streak had been, say, 35, then his score would have been = 6000*35/219 = 958.9, and everybody else would have gotten a few points less (proportionally). The point is that, with Proportional Scoring, every game makes a difference in the score (even if it doesn't change your rank)! If firenze had gotten 32, he would still have been 2nd, but then Darkosi's score would have been = 6000*33/220 = 900.0, and firenze's score would have been = 6000*32/220 = 872.7 (70.9 points more, and everybody else would have scored a bit less).

Not that I hate numbers--I'm a stats girl-geek and use stats for analyses in my work. Tony, I'll add my two cents: I vote to keep it the way it is. The times when there are a lot more players, some of them are just playing that particular variant that they like and it just happens that the WWC is being played in that variant. I noticed that a couple of times, where I saw some names that I hadn't seen before or since during the WWC. Besides, that alternate method looks like more work for YOU & you do a lot of extra work already to keep this going.

I always have thought that the "difficulty scalar" for the WWC set up by "free@last" was a bit extreme. 2.5x just seemed a bit much for me, although I liked, and like, the concept. I believe (but don't quote me) at the time I argued for a limit of 2.0. Pulling back that scalar would have some of the same effect, methinks, as the extraordinary range would be narrowed. However, along the same line of reasoning, it wouldn't bother me in the least to lower the scalar on the 12x1 to .75, for example. (Not that I *expect* that to happen, just sayin'.)

Might I point out that I don't think you've explained thoroughly how the "proportional score" is calculated. Yes, it's related to strength length, but you don't (or at least I can't see it above) explain the divisor. In the example you give, it's 217, but I had to study it a few moments to realize (I hope) that it comes from a total of the streak lengths of every player that day. [Although I now see that you have it at the bottom of the column of streak lengths, but maybe could have been better elucidated.] I *do* like the idea that Darkosi's margin of victory would have gotten rewarded. There have been some times in the past where such a margin would have really made a gigantic difference, as back when somebody (Darkosi? (no I think it was someone else)) lapped the field 2-3 weeks in a row. The significant downside to this is that someone with "too much time on their hands" can just play 12x1 or 13x0 for umpteen hours just to run up the score, as I did a couple of times in the latter. I'm pretty sure that serves no real purpose in the easier variants (as it's only measuring time commitment, not skill), whereas in yesterday's 5x8 it helps to delineate the difference(s) more clearly. However, and this makes intuitive sense to me......with proportional scoring yesterday, Darkosi's 33 would have been worth *more than* twice as much as WRAC's 16, whereas with the current model, it's 'only' worth a little less than double. Personally, for such an example, I like what we have now better, as a streak of 16 in 5x8 is pretty laudable.

All that said, there's a bit of elegance to your Proportional scoring idea. However, as in yesterday's example, I think it stretches out the scoring too much. Perhaps on other days with a lot of participation, it may work in the other direction, and intuitively, without doing the math, I think it would. Certainly in something like 13x0 it would. I would be in favor, conceptually, of drawing the top and bottom of the standings closer together. I suspect (strictly on a human psychological level), that someone way down towards the bottom has little incentive to play for points. Make sense?

Your last idea above, decreasing the lower scores faster, also works against my immediately above psychological argument, speculative though it is. I.e., 'separation' at the margin is often real, and should be counted.

Your "bottom up" approach, at least in the example above, seems reasonable. I would like to see more data on how that would play out.

1) I really would like to hear free@last's opinions on this. We (collectively) spent A LOT of time hashing out this method, and it shouldn't be discarded without serious deliberations. He put in tremendous work to get this going, and keep it running. His opinion, should he want to proffer it, would be valuable.
2) I'm probably going to quit playing anyway, so maybe my opinions aren't very important.
3) This is probably too much to ask/hope for, but it would be cool to do some sort of regression analysis, like go back in time 10 weeks, and so to see how the two lists would compare. That wouldn't give all the answers, but it give a better "feel" of how it would affect the overall method of scoring.

I know CubicSprock lapped the field when he set the new daily record in 6x5, and I also remember ValpoJim doing it once (lapping the field). Perhaps Arrheus was the other one I was thinking of above, although in quickly looking back, Darkosi has indeed done it at least once also, simultaneously breaking a daily record.

That sparked another twist on your 'margin of victory' idea. Perhaps real "bonus points" could be given for such extraordinary achievements. Lapping the field = 100 bonus points, for example. 1.5 times second place = 50 bonus points, and so on. However, this works against my above-stated feeling that the top and bottom need to be drawn closer together. So, ultimately I withdraw that suggestion, but there it is in case it strikes a chord in someone else.

WWC weights, I have been thinking for sometime about have a different weights for each variant that would be more representative of the 'actual' difficulty (certainly 13x0, 12x1 and 11x1 are not equally difficult!). 5) I am a little concerned about have current results be comparable to past results. 6) While I like to respect 'tradition', I am also in favor of "correcting past mistakes" and/or making improvements. 7) Thanks for saying there is, "bit of elegance to my Proportional scoring idea".

Here are the results from the WWC for Wednesday, 27 May 2015, in W7x4.
