Yeah, difficulty starts to invert fairly quickly above 10. I remember thinking I should make it actually generate harder deals but like I said, 30 minutes was about what I invested in thinking about difficulty levels. If you've every tried the winnable solitaire here, that was quite a mess trying to figure out how to make those deals solvable by humans. There are lots of deals the machine can solve but which are very tricky for humans. Lots of cases where things seem to be going good until suddenly you're hosed. I recall having to do a number of things to try to make those deals more manageable but it's still pretty darn tricky even with the rules tweaks. Denny

Can we assume that the values in the columns are actually unwinnable, and not winnable? It makes sense that a few thousand games for 12x0 difficulty 10 are unwinnable and none for 12x4 difficulty 10...

So there is only one unwinnable at level-10 of 9x3? That's surprising. I need to convert these numbers back to number of unwinnables because my code has been written based on number of unwinnables. Are you able to give the game numbers of unwinnable games for some variants? Like 9x3, 10x2, 7x5 level 10.

Thanks a lot, very interesting data. It's funny that on level 1 even 5x2 and 6x1 one of every 7 or 8 games is winnable. Also an unwinnable at (not playable here) 5x11-12... From a practical point of view, the number of unwinnables for some 6x or more variants in markedly different than previous results. For 7x5 you have (levels 5-12) 0,0,0,0,2,5,2,9 whereas free's solver had 0,0,1,5,16,30,n/a,n/a. For 6x7 (levels 5-10) it's 0,0,0,0,0,1 vs 1,2,5,5,11,19. What's the 13x1-12 unwinnable and what are the 7x0-10 and 7x0-12 winnables?

Now 7x5 is similar to 10x2 in that it gives you better chances to play at level-11. I find it hard to believe that 7x5 level 11 has only 2 unwinnables. If that is correct I will switch to level 11 in 7x5. I have updated my page with these results. You can click the variants to see the calculated "expected streak length" and "expected percentages".

i went to 14 just to see if the trend to harder continued after 12. Seems to up to 14. The algo was designed for 1 thru 20. i read somewhere that the games started to get easier approaching 20. Most likely because the abundance of high cards made it easier to build downward and get them out of the way. it will fail for 0 and 21. The next 10 less than 0 or greater than 21 will trend the other way back to level 10 and stay at level 10 for all levels thereafter.

Here's another screenshot. This is a position I got to in a failed attempt and you can't solve it from here, but it's what got me on the right track. If you pretend that you can make one impossible move then the game can be solved (although that in itself is not trivial). That gives the idea of changing the order of moves so you can get to the same position as this except that the impossible move has already been played. It still probably took me 15 attempts after having this idea to actually making it work as you have to be very precise - and of course at that point I didn't know whether it was the right idea or just another dead end.

FINALLY managed to figure out 9x3 10216-10. I was becoming kind of obsessed with this game, to the point where I was even thinking about it away from the laptop, making moves in my head having pretty much had the layout burned into my brain! With Spud's hints (thanks Spud!) I knew what he meant but it was the actual execution that was the tricky part, obviously. I eventually got into a position where the cards were laid out almost identically to Spud's second pic, but with one string in a different column, which proved crucial.

*Really* not trying to make a federal case of out this, but........................let me just pose the question: Since cellmate is 'finding' these solvable difficult deals, and naming them, and then they're being solved, doesn't that corrupt the database? He asked this question (worded differently) in another thread, but I let it go. I just now tried to sort 4x4-10 by winning percentage, but the "Win%" clickable column thing doesn't seem to be working. (Or at least it doesn't show any having been won.) But since (I think) these aren't counting for streaks, then they aren't really "solved" according to Denny's database?? Am I interpreting that correctly?

It doesn't affect streaks. It does affect that particular game stats. Only thing it does "corrupt" is cumulative game stats for that certain variant and level (no 4x4s over level 5 have been won until yesterday). Which isn't really significant over a small sample. The sort by win % works, but only one way, with the non-solved (0%) games always on top. You'll find the solved ones at the bottom of the 4x4-10 page, and on other variants on the last pages, for example to see 4x4-5 solved games sort then go to pages 326-328.

Its good Hop! Its nice to have both. For easier variants unsolved can be interesting. For harder solved. Ah, you're right. I'm used to sorting looking for the lowest percentage wins. I knew something wasn't jiving. But still, I believe this does qualify as "corruption". It's *nothing* like if they counted for streaks, of course, but it gives a false impression of "solvability", no?
