Subject: Named Moves?

Seems as tho what outskirts is describing is the same as Hop's first Towers of Hanoi example, except that Hop's example is a more general description of the same situation, not requiring the 3 cards to be moved to be sequential. Then..........Hop's second example seems to be *exactly* what outskirts described. When did we move to using chess-like designations for move sequences? Did I miss that?

I saw Spud using it to give some solutions for a couple of times. I copied it from there. Is it chess-like? It makes sense because if you play through keyboard interface you just type them to make a move.

Chess-like is a bit of a stretch for this notation. Maybe correspondence chess (which in this computer age is a bit of a dying breed).

Correspondence chess used little notepads with chessboards printed on them in black and white, and had a set of rubber stamps with inkpads in black and red.

As someone who (semi-) used to be familiar with chess notations, yes. However, it took me about 2 seconds to realize what you were doing. I do believe I remember it being used earlier, but extremely minimally. The mere "67" isn't very informative - unless you're used to it. If I were going to do something like that, I'd go "6-->7", "6>7" or something similar, albeit 'wordier'. I would venture to guess less than 5% of the people who play here use the keyboard. Likely less than 2%. I know it's possible, but can't imagine doing so. (And yes, I know some speedy tournament players swear by it.) And I'm not complaining about your notation - just wondering if there had been some sort of "movement" I missed. I may have to try it sometime now, just to see - altho since speed isn't a concern to me, don't think I'd transition to that. That move-logging method is certainly concise, but much harder to visualize than the 'word picture' outskirts was painting for the same thing (altho that ended up being the *opposite* of concise). In fact, it's really (nearly) necessary to go back and forth between that notation, and a view of the board. (Unless one gets used to it, I guess.)

67 is equivalent to clicking column 6 followed by clicking column 7. You can experient with it. Even you can mix it with keyboard and mouse. So when moving from column 1 to 8 it can be faster to type 1 and click 8 (if your cursor is close to the column 8).

Correspondence chess uses only numbers in similar fashion (but doubled to represent rank and file). For example 1.e4 is 52 54. See link below. The rubber stamps were popular (also for chess problemists sending their entries for a competition), but not mandatory.

What I call ToH move is such frequent thing that I keep coming across it. Here's another example. This time I will not give the solution. Maybe we should call it "32123" because streak of 3 is first broken into 2 and 1 and merged again in reverse order: 3 -> 2+1 -> 1+2 -> 3 Maybe ezize instead of 32123 treating it leetspeak.

When you've got 2-3 cards in separate columns on one end of a wide board, and they need to go to the other end of the board. Instead of one at a time, because you've got enough space to do this, you first stack the cards then move the stack to the other end. Just to save moving back and forth a few times. What would you call that? Tidying Up?

What a good idea!! I'll try to remember to do it!..... THANKS, 🙂!! When I "tidy up", it usually means making unnecessary moves (like freeing up extra columns)! I used to do it a lot. Now I'm a little more aware of "wasting" moves (and time). But, when one is using cards, "time" isn't much of an issue! Today, in the WWC (w12x1), I'm not using cards at all.

I only thought of "tidying up" when I asked what should we call it... but hey, if I'm tidying up at home I'll take all I can carry when it needs to go somewhere else, like to the other end of the house. Or upstairs if I had one. Been doing the move with 12x1w just out of laziness, and I like to line things up more than I need to, and make big super moves just for fun. Thought about making a video for Calico because I think he said in his video that he doesn't know how to do that! But I got that that's just how he plays. Ferrying is good too 😁

Don’t you hate it when you’re clicking really fast and you click on a card (to play it up to the foundation) only to see that auto-move shot it up there already? Then you have to slow down and cancel your “mis-click”. I wonder what you’d call that? Auto-bombed?

I kind of like the offensive rebound. Where your card hits the back of the rim and bounces back to timbuktu. Then you got to chase it down before time expires. Works good in tournaments and hotstreak.
