How is it possible to have such a high streak in winnable 13 x 0? There are frequent unwinnable games. Am I the only one who keeps getting them? Can’t they be taken out?

Elbe, Sounds like you are playing the normal 13x0 rather than the winnable version. The All Time best streak in regular 13x0 is 197 (which is quite amazing) not near wasjun’s streak in the winnable variety. The difference between the two is exactly what you are looking for. There are no unwinnable games in winnable 13x0. So when you’re ready to play, don’t click on Lucky 13 or 13x0. Make sure to choose “13x0 winnable” which is one of the options for games to play. According to your recent play, you've lost two winnable games since 8/22 and both had winning rates above 85%. Unless you're referring something prior, all your other losses were streak mode. James might be right. there is a glitch that'll switch modes on you.

Ah, that’s what it is. If you look through your recent history you lost a couple of unwon (probably unwinnable) 13x0 games but both were NOT winnable 13x0. You were playing the streak type. But as redberet says, there is a glitch on freecell.net that will change you from winnable to streak. The only clue is that in the bottom right of the board it will say “streak” rather than “winnable.” But the top still says Winnable, even though it’s a lie. We have never been able to figure out exactly when it strikes, but I’ve gotten to the point that anytime I’m playing a winnable variety and I step away from the game for a while, I play something else before I come back to it. That way I can be sure it’s actually a winnable game. Another frustration is that the little “streak” or “winnable” that appears in the bottom right corner doesn’t always show. I sometimes reload the page to make sure it is a winnable. Very annoying bug. James

Thanks Hop for doing this. My winnable ranking is taking a beating since I lost my 12x1 streak. I have been focusing on getting it back. I lost another. 3 moves into it I was stuck. And it didn't look like a hard one so I didn't give it full thought. I don't really play for ratings, more for streaks. But I do pay a little more attention to my rating at work. I used to give up easier, especially if I wasn't on a streak. I often play when I have a few minutes between patients. And on hold with an ins. company or lab.

Mr.Fixit has informed us that play of the winnables is only a very small percentage of the overall play. Something like 5%? (Although that's been awhile, so maybe it's changed.) As it should be. Or more properly, it should be like 0.0005%. I actually feel more strongly about this now than ever before. It's a perversion. It actually takes away maybe something like 30-40%(???) of the skill of the game - for the harder variants. And since we play this game to test our skill and/or patience (and/or persistence for those few who use aids).............................................using the 'aid' of knowing that a game is beatable causes the player to miss out on a significant part of the challenge. Indeed, as some of us have made the point all along, it *is* "freecell lite". That said...........I'm glad those who indulge in this perversion actually enjoy it, and that it brings pleasure to those. I'm just sayin' - they're missing out of part of the experience. Making something easier is not the same as making something better. IMO.

As long as it has meaning to the person playing, then that's enough for me. I feel anyone playing 10x6 knowing they're going to win should take pride in their streak. That being said, my personal best in 13x0 is 152 streak and 859 winnable. The one I'm more proud of is the one I'm not likely to break. Winnables are training wheels that are harmless in the long term.

We know they're "harmless" to ethical players. But we also know that they're attractive to those who are not above "getting a little help" - to those who seek out "winning" as a goal with *perhaps* less concern to how that goal is achieved. Which thus is opening a door to the dark arts. And to be clear.............this is NOT NOT NOT meaning to imply most of those who play winnables are of this mindset, or indulge in these things. Only that those who may be less scrupulous are much more likely to 'enjoy' the winnables'. It's just the nature of the beast.

The invention is a perversion. Not those who play such games. And yes, I know it was a inimical, perhaps(?) exaggerated choice of words. There's nothing wrong with playing those games for their own sake - or for one's own enjoyment. The problem comes with the temptation to exploit their susceptibility to the use of tools *for one's own self-aggrandizement*. And that is aside from my main, initial point. This one ^^^^ has been made over and over again. I'm just saying that one who plays the winnables is missing part of the challenge. A challenge separate from, separate from and beyond, the overall challenge of beating a freecell deal that you know can be won. In fact..............very often that challenge is the harder part.

I agree that it's an additional challenge. Just yesterday I played one 10x1 and it didn't seem winnable at first. I would enjoy playing more of them but you have to fix the Elo rating for unwinnable games first, there's no way around that. Then you can exclude the winnable variants from Elo and then we'll see more plays for the standard variants. I hope this happens. Meanwhile I'm enjoying this competition. I'm competing against the best streak players this site has to offer so it's not meaningless.

Interesting point - and it is a version of a perversion - but totally different in that within each universe, the challenge of not knowing (regular), or yes, knowing (winnable) doesn't change. Yes, changing a deal from climate 10 (random), to say, climate 7, may make a deal winnable that otherwise wasn't. But from the perspective of the player analyzing that climate 7 deal.......he or she still has no clue as to whether it's winnable or not (assuming we're talking about a reasonably difficult variant here that contains unwinnables). So that part of the challenge hasn't been negated. That work still has to be done. The percentage chance of it being winnable has changed, in general, but since climate 7 is still "climate" and not "weather", that player still wouldn't know what the dealer was dealing that day. Make sense?

In my parlance.......the term "winnable" refers only to that *created* universe - not the 'organic' one deriving from the utterly high odds that any 10x6, for example, is gonna be winnable by very, very high mathematical odds.
