Actually why set unwinnables to 4000? Why isn't set to a bigger value? Why are we so mean? When I lose (2725) to an unwinnable rated at 4000, I still lose 0.005 points. If lost: New player rating: 2.724,995 New game rating: 4.000,005 How 'bout setting it to 1000000 (yes, a million)?

Hop, here's the relevant piece from our email conversation a month ago: We've been slowly moving to a model where we instead identify the actual unwinnables using cellmate's lists. Soon I hope we can speed that up, but it's a multi-step process and there's an order to it. 1. Fix tournament reporting so we don't ruin the fun of hunting winnable games once Elos become a giveaway about what's winnable and what isn't. 2. Add the Select field to my Elo Fiddle tool so I can much more quickly put overrated games back at an appropriate rating now that we know they're winnable. 3. Redefine the level average (initGameStats) as the average of just winnable games, meaning it excludes all games rated 4000 or more. 4. Using cellmate's lists, taking one game level at a time if we have to, set unwinnable games to a rating of 4000 (not 3999), even assigning ratings to unplayed games. 5. I manually correct any games rated 3999 or below based on a rule of thumb that assumes unbeaten games will be beaten once when played twice as many times as the current plays (treats an 0 for 30 game as a 1 for 60 game in other words). ... 8. Profit. [OK, that's an old internet joke.]

So we're partway through step 1, but still need to mask the tourney game selection board and the players' Recent History page. Step 2 is done. Step 3 can't be skipped. We could easily add a step 6 that tells the server if player loses to 4000-rated game not to exchange points at all, so the number itself doesn't mean anything.

But if I go to the zeros listings link given on this page ( https://hoppi.neocities.org/freecell/competition-scores-joey.html?inx=9 )... I don't find myself anywhere on those lists. Are the lists only for daily play? Is there an historical record somewhere, where I could keep track of my progress or lack of progress or see evidence of decrepitness closing in on cognitive functions?

HoldOnThere! : "Are the lists only for daily play?" That's a live standings page. And looks like you have currently two active streaks (You need at least three). If you click "i" icon in that page, there is an explanation for it.

"To be listed in the page one of the following should be satisfied: User must have streaks at least in half of the variants. User must have placed in a podium spot (the first three spots) taking the ties into account. In other words all the colored spots are listed." That's in general for the listings on that page. And since the "Zeroes" competition has 6 variants, that means you must have *active* streaks in 3 of them. For the 11-sums, for example, there are 8 variants, so one must have an active streak in at least 4 of them. And since you've (M.P.) not been actually playing (in the parlance of most here) here much yet, streaks "age off" after 2 weeks of no play in any variant.

Thanks red. As usual I blew the chance of an early winnable 8x0 (13792), on my 29th game of this new set. I had it all worked out but managed to miscue when it counted! However 90 games later I got the jackpot with 29854, so 119 tries is easily my best of the three. I've got my eye on Darkosi's record of 19 wins at 8x0, so only another 16 fortnights to draw level.

I just tried an 8x0, but it looked unwinnable... only one move, a black 3, and after that no moves. It is difficult enough to do the mental gymnastics to go as far as you can to solve a solvable 8 x 0... but to waste your time on an appearing-playable but unwinnable game... that's a wretched thing to experience!!!... except you won't know if it is an unwinnable or not, even after you have made the effort. Oh well, back to banging my head against the wall... but I won't know if it's a wall or a thicket I'm up against... so far the 8 x 0's all feel like re-enforced cement.

Once the first one went over then I had a fortnight to get the other two over, once I got them over, then it was pedal to the metal. They flamed out at 119, 123, 152 respectively. It's a fine line between letting a streak go stale or overplaying. It sure sucks losing at 99 I tell you. Glad it didn't happen to you seb.

Thanks for the help Hop and Kumquat and TNM... It's still confusing for me, and the 10's 9's and 8's are too tough. It's like chess though... I read someone's comment about that recently. I played chess over the decades. Postal chess in the 60s, tournaments in the 70s, in the 80s I was playing in German bars while sloshed, with my German-speaking Army buddies betting on me... thinking through the slosh is difficult... The Freecell zeros games (10,9,8) require deeper thinking that is a little beyond what my brain is capable of. One thing I noticed was that after an hour or two of non-productive headbanging on the zeros playground, tournaments seem easier.

Uberman's current score 337. A 8x0 win: 337*2 = 674 A 9x0 win 337*log2(2+1) = 534 Looks good to me.

Well red, I think Uberman's strategy is the right one - for him - for now. Keeping his base (11,12,13s) intact while going all out for the sky. The 10s are an important link and getting to 4 was strategically sound, but I can see the day coming when it will require a 6 combined with a 3 for the 9s.

For me I think the most important part of the base is the 11x0s, which probably sounds obvious. The 12x0s and 13x0s have their unwinnables, sure, but you can usually rack up a decent streak pretty quickly with those again regardless. The 10x0s aren't too bad as you know the streak's not going to be super long anyway, but getting near the top streaks in 11x0 always seem to be a struggle, as some no doubt found out yesterday in the SSC. I was lucky for this zeroes competition in that I already had a decent 11x0 streak running, but I feel like once that disappears it will be the hardest one of any of the variants to replenish. It'd be nice to reach 3 in the 9x0s, but I feel like that's only going to happen incrementally ie. I don't think I could stomach the fight a la Buzzy in reaching 3 in a single day. I'm really tempted to try and go for broke with 10x0s this week, but not sure yet!
