Subject: logged in as wrong name?

There are two reports of being logged in as the wrong name. Nothing has changed but I'm trying to figure out what could have happened.

One person says "when I try to log in" so that suggests they were logged out (or cookies were gone). You should never need to login, the cookie lets the browser remember you.

If you can give me any more information about what you did, that would be useful. Like did you actually log out? Or do you run any kind of cookie scrubber or delete cookies when you close your browser? What is the exact name you normally use?

And when you do login, make sure you select Registered and don't just take the default of Anonymous.

If you need to force login to happen again, go to the Logout page and make sure you actually click the button to log out. If you don't click it you remain logged in.

P.S. I have the default set to Anonymous because other game sites just let people start playing with no fuss so I was trying to do that here. And registering a name actually requires several steps and that's a hindrance to new players. Again, unless you're somehow deleting cookies (or actually logging out) you should never have to login.

I did a Google search for "cookie scrubber extensions" and there are tons of them. Make sure you're not running one (or more) of them or at least make sure freecell.net is on the OK list.

For many years my login routine was slightly faster: My player name was anticipated on the login screen; I quickly typed my password and hit "Enter". Now, the enter key doesn't work. You have to mouse over, then click on the displayed Enter field.

Several times when I rapidly did my old routine I began playing (or was about to start) and saw the screen was displaying someone else's playing name, not "AshburnAJ" (my own player name).

You should never see a login prompt, it should just remember you. What browser? Cookie scrubber?

I have Verizon as the Internet provider and often use a Freecell icon on a Google page if I don't already see Freecell on my home screen.

AshburnAJ -- I'm afraid that doesn't tell me what I need to know. From your note I'm going to presume you're using the Google Chrome browser.

After you've launched Freecell, go to the three dots upper right and click on it. Go down to Help (near the bottom of the list) and hover over it. A flyout menu will appear. Select About Google Chrome. This will confirm you're using Chrome and will show the version. If those instructions don't work you're probably using a different browser. Instructions will be similar for the other browsers though probably.

After we know what browser you're using we'll look for cookie scrubber extensions or anything else that might be keeping you from getting auto-logged in like should happen.

Oh and if you can tell me the page you're starting on for Freecell that would be good. After you click on your Freecell icon, look at the gray bar up very top and tell me what address you see. For example it might look something like: freecell.net/f/c/dgame.html (see the orange rectangle below)

Thank you for the clear instructions. Your expertise is all a foreign language to me.

Yes, I'm using Google Chrome. That flyout menu revealed this message: "Relaunch Chrome to finish up-dating. Version 151.0.7922.174 (Official Build)(64-bit)" So, this may be a component of my issues, yet I may have experienced the login with the wrong player name prior to the recent Chrome update. Not usure.

The address I'm using is exactly what you suggested I'd see: freecell.net/f/c/dgame.html

I'll relaunch Chrome in a minute.

I was somehow switched to another user name about a month ago and all attempts to fix the situation failed so I just played under that name but everything was slower and I hated the cards on the phone.  Suddenly yesterday I was able to logout and login using my username and password.  Al. Is working great now - speed is back and cards good.  Only annoyance now is the tournament notifications.  They are a PIA on phone as they cover up cards and slow play.

Ash -- that's probably not horribly out of date but go ahead and click Update.  Then we're going to check for extensions to see if you've got anything that could be scrubbing those cookies.  Again go to 3 dots upper right, halfway down you'll Extensions. Hover over that and you'll get a flyout menu and then you click Manage Extensions. Tell me what you see.

shoreylj -- in the game click the gear icon upper right and you'll see options to turn off tournament notification, control card speed, and select "no mobile cards".  Everything that bugs you.

And if you ever need it, just go to the logout page and click the Logout button. Go to Play and you'll get to login again and specify the right username.

Under the heading "All Extensions" there are just two info boxes with the following text:

  * Cisco Webex Extension  -  Join Webex meetings using Google Chrome.

  * Google Docs Offline  -  Edit, create, and view your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations -- all without internet access.

Each box shows a toggle switch currently in the "on" position. Each box allows a click on either "Details" or "Remove". Please let me know if you think they're a problem. It seems unlikely to me.

Those should both be OK. I'm trying to figure out how to help you and figure out this issue and we could get super nerdy but honestly the most reasonable thing might be to just use a different browser. Microsoft Edge seems totally fine. Just type Edge in the Start/Run box on your system or click the Edge icon (see below) and after Edge launches, put in freecell.net. Login once and you should be good forever.
