I remember back in middle school. Three of us got called in by the teacher for having the same incorrect answers on a math test. Well, it wasn't a problem for me to duplicate the same incorrect answers. Not so much for the other two. Lesson to be learned, you don't have to cheat to get the wrong answer.

Back in the service, I was sent twice to interview for a position working for the A/V team at the White House. Doing the setups and such for the President's speeches. Both times there were about 20 interviewees. First time was during AIT. I declined because I hadn't gotten to jump school yet. Second time was at Bragg and I disclosed that I had indulged in a doobie in the past, knowing that this automatically disqualified me. They had explained that I'd have to reenlist for 4 years, and my uniform would be a suit. I wonder how that would have changed my life. Another doob also got me in trouble. When I finally got my promoted to E4 it was flagged due to incriminating evidence my Top found. The next month my name again comes up for promotion. I went into the company commander's office and told him that I respectfully decline promotion. He tells me to sit down and talks to me for an hour to convince me to take his promotion. He finally says, look it's an extra 40 a month, you can buy yourself another bag. I said to him sir, since you put it that way, I'll take your promotion. I'll never understand why he did that, but I'm glad he did.

I made a video of my reaction to that. BTW..........Mason is still alive, in his 80s. Most here probably know this, but he also wrote jokes for many TV shows, including The Smothers Brothers and SNL. He was sorta a comedian in the genre of Martin Mull and Steve Martin, mixing comedy and music, altho maybe preceding them a tad. Very talented guy, as is Tommy, of course.

Well, that was here, several years ago. Maybe 2015-16-(ish?). Coulda been a year or so earlier. I think I've alluded to my friendship/relationship with Billy before, but just wasn't explicit. I mentioned my first encounter with him and Don (Julin, his former mando sidekick) in the "old music" thread, but didn't elaborate. So......I first met them in Bristol (not CT, or England, but the one that sits on the TN/VA line), and where they yearly have one of the best festivals there is - the aptly named Rhythm & Roots Reunion. This first meeting was at one of those festivals. Maybe 2012-3-(ish?). I think he was 19 or 20, but looked 16. There are many dozens of bands/artists that perform, so one has to pick and choose. It's kinda like Jazzfest (or maybe SXSW), except smaller (even tho about 20 stages/venues) - yet more enjoyable, ultimately, because of the proximity of the interplay between performers and audience. Fortunately, I had done my research, altho at that time there wasn't much to research. But I picked them (among a few other "unknowns") for me and my friends to check out - clueless as to what I was getting us into. (They were relying on my knowledge and background for ideas outside the more famous 'known' acts.) It was at one of the smaller, side stages, and there *may* have been 50 people there. And it's such a low-key environment there, anyway, that sitting on the front row was no problem, thus being about 10 ft. away from them. Well............I knew within 5-10 seconds (not an exaggeration) that I was in the presence of greatness, and within 5-10 minutes that I had 'accidentally' discovered "the next big thing". One of those musical experiences in life where one incredulously wonders "how is that coming from someone so young?". So I ended up speaking with them afterwards, and learned that they were actually intimidated to come down here (from Traverse City) to play in the South. This was their first real trip South, and they honestly didn't know if they could measure up to what they were stepping into. (This area is a true hotbed of Americana, and always has been. And they were aware of that.) (And remember, Billy seems to have 'inherited' whatever it was the Doc was imbued with, so he knew what was what in that regard.) Long story short............I assured them in the strongest terms that they could quit worrying. I saw them either 3 or 4 more times that (long) weekend, and Billy and I ended up becoming friends, as much as you can be in that sort of milieu. They turned a lot of heads, but that only represented maybe a few hundred people out of tens of thousands at the festival. I even told them I'd speak to some of the movers and shakers in the area to get them gigs around there. As it turned out, I ran into one of my good friends, and the owner of the establishment where that picture was taken, on the streets that weekend. (He's also a performer.) I told him in the strongest way possible that he needed to get them booked (which he did a few months later). Later that same weekend, I also told Billy that he would end up moving to Nashvegas, and be playing with "all the greats" - everybody who is anybody. Whoever he wanted to. He wasn't at all sure that could happen. But I knew he was already that good, even at such a young age. I may even have mentioned Sam and Bela and all that crowd; don't remember for sure on that. So anyway.............going forward, I was able to get them booked around this area, and altho I didn't have the wherewithal to get them booked in Nashville, I was able to get them hooked up with those who *could* get them introduced into that scene. It happened, actually, quicker than I thought it would. But that's the way talent is. Great talent attracts great talent, and it was rewarding to see him get on that track with my minimal little push and encouragement. Don decided he wanted to stay in Michigan, as he's older and all that. BTW...........Don is the real deal with his mando chops. Very Grisman-esque. In fact, he's done some stuff with him; he's that level, just has never pushed for fame and travel, etc. I suspect there's some stuff of them (Julin and Dawg) on gootube, but I haven't looked. So.....Billy "went off on his own" to Nashvegas, and in *almost* literally no time, he had connected with "the guys". So.......after that transition, any time he was in this area (including Asheville), we tried to spend some time together. Not like, hang out for hours, but as much as his schedule would allow. I'll leave it at that. We're not some "best buds", but we have a fondness for each other, let's say. He's gotten too big now, to play the smaller places, but that's ok. He's doing what he was born to do, with who all he was born to do it with.

BTW, Buzz (or whoever), you might want to revisit the clip I posted Fri May 13 23:54:58 2022 in the "old music" thread. It's Billy and Michael Cleveland, but that was before you got to see either of them live. That video mostly highlights Cleveland, and it's just about as good as it gets.

Great story, TN. That picture is a forever treasure. I have had a few brief interactions with some artists, but nothing like that. My "musicologist" friend has rubbed shoulders with some of the giants of the indie world, and booked them for his shows. But that's rare air for most folks. ============ I was waiting at the back of a venue for a warmup act to begin when the "main attraction" was walking out but stopped for a minute next to me. His bass player had to run backstage for her wallet before they dashed out for a quick dinner. I knew that my friend was well acquainted with this artist, so I quickly texted him. My friend responded, "Did you buy his new vinyl? Excellent. Tell him that you want him to put on some of his bass player's lipstick, put a 'kiss' print on the record cover, and sign it." I delivered that message, which was initially received with a nervous/uncomfortable laugh, but he got the joke when I told him who put me up to it. (I guarantee you've never heard of this guy, TN.) And that's one of my best. (shrug)

There is something exceptional about a battalion size jump, over 600 troopers. Now Sicily dropzone measures 2 miles by a half mile. Ten planes staggered one behind one another slowing down to 120 knots at 1250 ft. From the first exit to the last PLF takes less than a couple minutes. Just like that, the skies are suddenly full of nylon, and it is a sight to behold. Now that is something I'd like to do again. Not just in my dreams.
