[Just now saw your question.]  Hmmm.   That's not something I'm gonna know.  Especially since I haven't kept up with baseball the last 25-30 years or so.  And managers are often on the periphery for me anyway.  That said..............back when one of my cousins and I were rivals in the AL (he ChiSox; me Indians), I was *very* familiar with those guys - Fox, Aparicio, Minoso, etc., etc.  And their manager was Al Lopez - of whom I have many cards, too.  Only because I don't have a mental list I can pick from, I'll have to guess Lopez purely by default, knowing there's only a miniscule chance it'd be him.  Did LaRussa manage them for a while?  But that wouldn't count because his stints with the Redbirds, and anybody else, for that matter, weren't in the glorious Kelly Gold and white of Finley's A's.  He ALWAYS looked out of place in any uni but the A's - therefore I'll ignore any later-on credit to him on that basis.  To the point of being hard on the eyes, even.  Guillen, 747??  And that's only 3rd?!?!  Then maybe it's some old-timer back in the Black Sox days or something.  Only guess I got, really, is Lopez, and virtually no chance he'd have anywhere close to 747.

Lopez had 1410, so probably him, but there's one other of note.

That dude lived in Tampa until his late nineties.

Edit: and LaRussa 678, so he's number four.

Edit: Lopez, actually only 840.

I'm shocked Lopez had that many, but they had a lot of good years there.  I'd bet it's somebody back before 1940, and maybe way before that.  But that's *purely* a guess.

Can you be a bit more specific on what you mean by that?  I *think* I know but don't trust myself.  Just extrapolating my suspicions...........might be the ChiSox.  Orioles a weak contender.  Maybe the Indians for a short period when they could throw those 4 (or 3.5) great arms at you.

Thinking a bit more about your question...........I believe my answer holds water.  I'm intuiting that you meant more pitching, less power, more running, better defense, and such.  Maybe trying to win more games 2-1 rather than 8-5.  So.......assuming that's what you meant, what I wrote above is reasonably accurate.   It's pretty easy to 'leave out' the BoSox, Yankees, Tigers, Angels (depending on how far back you mean by "back in the day"), A's, and Twins.

Altho my passion(?) for the Indians waned ~90-95% when they dropped their archival moniker, there's still a residual DNA-esque remnant.  Not to mention they're still standard small-market underdogs.  And yes, still favor the Braves in support of their Native American name.

Exult for Pinella's Reds??  What you talkin' 'bout?  Where'd that come from?  Altho Cincinnati is likely the best place in Ohio, that ain't sayin' much.  And just like Indy and Lubbock are forever tainted by bobby knight.............the Rednecks are forever tainted by their redneck legacy, intertwined and enhanced, of course, with/by Marge. (Altho that's a bit mitigated by all that not being *the* big deal in Cincy that bobby was in those places he haunted.)

Saw my first ML game at Crosley Field - I think.  And I was entranced, even being young.   Close between that and Baltimore for first.  And it may have been 2 games; not sure.  (Baltimore was 2 games.) But the "BRM" days were already more than enough to be against them.  But........since that's a privately-owned team.........can't criticize the city and its denizens as much as in the knight and hayes cases (Columbus).

And since that was way before the bad stuff, I wasn't anti-Cincy yet.  Frank Robinson was on that team - among all the others of that time. Thought I had a game program and yearbook from then, but haven't seen them in decades......

Did you read the rule I posted?

*Anytime* a runner is gonna be out by a baserunning error in such cases, an appeal *has* to be made.  If a guy on third just takes off for home (with less than 2 outs) before a fly ball is caught, that run's gonna count - UNLESS the defense appeals it.  Same with a missed base.  It's up to the D to challenge it.  So *IF* the D had thrown it to third instead of first, then *that* runner would have been out rather than the one on first - and the run wouldn't have counted.  The "4th out" rule allows the D to supplant that (original) third out with the guy on third leaving too early IF THEY HAVE NOT YET LEFT THE FIELD.  But in this case they had.

A certain pitcher twirled a no-hitter vs. Cincy in June, 1971, in Riverfront.  It was the second time that month the Reds had been no-hit.  The first time was by Ken Holtzman of the Cubbies.  (And Gibson threw one vs. the Pirates later that season, too.)  But this particular effort was extremely noteworthy for an additional reason.  1)  Name the pitcher.  2)  What additional factor made it extremely noteworthy?

Since there have been quite a few no-hitters, I'll give a head start by saying this pitcher was with the team from The City of Brotherly Love.  Not a 'big' name guy - but one with a nice long career.  Not HOF..........but logged over 200 IP 9 times, and over 1500 career Ks.  WAR over 30 but I won't say how far above.  Also won a W. S. game - aaannnd......one of the very few players to have played in both the LL World Series and *the* W.S.

[Hint:  not Bunning; not Lefty.]

CORRECT on Rick Wise!! Only a walk kept it from being a perfect game.  A side note............Wise's first MLB win was the second game of a double-header.  The first game of it was Bunning's perfect game.

Now.........what made that no-hitter extremely noteworthy?

As to Torii Hunter.........yes, familiar with the name, and I believe even with that catch - altho I had also quit watching the A-S games back then.  But he was after I quit paying much attention - except for the playoffs.  But knew he was a great player.  But glad I didn't try to figger it out.
