Brewski, I think some folks frequent this discussion board for the peace and quiet. Kinda like going to a library not to read but to sit on a couch and and bask in the solitude. In other words, silence is not necessarily equivalent to a lack of appreciation. 

A lot of joke making, sure, but my contention on FreeCell play: in particular, DEMANDING play, staving off Alzheimer's...I do believe it (noticeably) useful mental exercise...shuffling off the proteins sludging up one's aging brain...

The Artemis 2 will be re-entering the atmosphere tomorrow at about 7:30 PM EDT. Live streaming will be available on lots of platforms. 

There’s been a bit of concern with the hear shield, though visual inspections have not revealed any damage.

The reports of the visual grandeur from the crew have been extraordinary.  Duh.  But even more so than I would have thought.

Everything from takeoff to splashdown seemingly flawless. And then their communications with the crews on the water failed. “Can you hear me now?” A bit anticlimactic and undoubtedly frustrating for all involved. 

This recovery is such a departure from Apollo. Four Navy crewmen went into to capsule after the hatch was opened. 

And a bit different from Grissom’s Mercury flight — splash, bang goes the hatch, and Grissom was in the water. 

Last night I was rather un-sober while trolling through the supermarket, and I sampled over a dozen fried shrimp--that weren't actually offered for sampling...eventually someone complained, so I bailed (no repercussions).

Looked a lot like fifty-five years ago. 

Not much improvement in technique.

NASA had the launch fully perfected by the time Mercury was lifting off. The concept of the shuttle was totally cool and completely ridiculous. The astronauts were sitting on a massive bomb that put them into space with a controlled explosion -- all necessary to lift the monstrous shuttle off the ground. The Mercury/Gemini/Apollo splashdowns were crude but effective. The Grissom incident was the only major problem.

The shuttle landings were awesome, but the tiles never ceased being a point of concern. So, naturally, the only obvious technology transferred from the shuttle to Artemis was the use of tiles on the heat shields. And, they continue to be problematic. When the Artemis begins re-entry, it initially bounces off the atmosphere and then heads down again. Artemis I bounced high enough that the tiles cooled considerably and "chipped" due to rapid thermal expansion and contraction. The answer for Artemis II was to control the bounce and avoid excessive cooling. According to NASA, this approach had a 95% chance of avoiding problems. Given that "problems" with heat shields become complete disasters, 5% chance of catastrophe ain't good enough. But, it worked out this time.

After splashdown, the recovery was ridiculously slow. The failed communication systems didn't help, but even upon arrival to the Integrity, the teams took about 90 minutes to get the crew out of the craft and onto the recovery ship. Maybe this was a dress rehearsal for when the crews will have spent time on the lunar surface, and complete decontamination will become necessary. No idea.

An amusing problem was the announcement immediately before launch that the Artemis II software had a bug -- Outlook was not functioning. Errr... what? Not wanting to miss any important emails, like .... emergency plumbers in your area, or huge savings on Dramamine, or sure fire cures for space herpes?

So they had to like, create a new alloy, to get its perfectly desired heating constant?

I sure hope Hop isn't finished...I think he's done fine work on this site.
