Still doing a post mortem on things.  I'll let you know what we figure out.  I was intending to change hosting but lemme understand what just happened before I assign blame.

I guess there is no need for me to come to this page (or 'thread' or "conversation" or whatever it is) every time I read that M-o-T-Fortnight -- the one with the heading saying "server trouble" -- as long as its last sentence is still in the "future tense". ('As of' the last time I checked, that last sentence was still saying: "Details will appear here.")

I mean, if eventually some more or less "authoritative" explanation, or some ['semi-'?] official 'post-mortem' does get posted here, then ... that M-o-T-F would (/slash "should" / "could") probably get UPDATED to say [something in the "present tense", like] "Details can now be found here." instead! ;

(right?)

I suppose that such an MoTF change might be due to something like the "Tue Aug 29 23:27:21 2023" post from SirRambo -- the one saying, in part, "NetCELL Error" -- but I figure that the M-o-T-F would probably *NOT* get changed just to alert readers to a post like *this* one.

This isn't shocking, but figgered I'd note it........

During one of the outages earlier today, I got bumped off, of course, and when I resumed, 'it' had switched me from W8x3 to regular 8x3, and it took me 5 games to notice it.  Stinks.

As of right now, I'm 'stuck' in a weird scenario where I'm playing regular 10x1, but it's recording them as W10x1.  (Yeah, I know, probably some sort of karma.)  I seem to vaguely remember once upon a time this happened, and the solution was to select another variant, play that, and then return.  As of now, if I change variant choice in the drop-down box, but then go back to 10x1, it still gives me W10x1.  Will report back later.........

[update - yeah, that worked.  But clearly, as we've known forever, something ain't right with the game selector stuff.]

My pet peeve is a different, though similar problem: I play only custom games these days. If my game times out, the game resets to 8x4 ever time. It’s a quick fix, but highly annoying when I don’t catch it before clicking PLAY.

For the server outages my guess would be a DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack against his hosting company directly or perhaps another client they also do business with.  The shoe fits with the situation.

We're all busy guys but we're conferring in email about things trying to figure out exactly what happened.  The server locked up hard and had to be rebooted.

Well Mike's not that busy. He's retired. But he has trouble remembering how to use "pwd".  Just joshing, he's still super knowledgeable, just not his priority these days as you might expect.

Could have been hurricane related. Folks around here are still without power and internet since Wednesday. (I was a lucky one, only out one day and no nights.)

I'm not really sure physically where we're hosting these days. The tech support folks all had eastern European names.

I just thought that maybe a few hundred thousand folks all making internet demands on their phones at the same time, when their internet is out, might have an effect somewhere down the line. It's bad! But I guess this happened before that happened. ✔️
