I doubt that Betelguese will go supernova on us in the near future (in human terms), but how cool would that be? Since my early years of science learnin', that's something I'd always hoped I'd get to see in my lifetime, but knew unlikely. That and Haley's, which I did get to see, but was pretty much a dud for all the years of anticipation. For background on the gravity waves aspect of this, go to the thread "Big, big, BIG (science) news", which I started nearly 6 years ago now, with the first legitimate evidence of detection of same. I would link it below, but I'm on a smartphone that doesn't handle multiple tasks like that well, especially on this site. Easy to find, and I did not overstate that case, as time has shown. Other sources have noted that large stars like Betelguese can undergo such intensity variations, but this one seems a bit odd, so who knows?

Maybe. But less weird (imo) than when they *tried* to replace the crowd noise at sports venues during the COVID big surge when no fans were allowed. That was surreal, and (imo) was a bad decision. How about replacing it with the sound of a bullwhip? I like that better. Or even the sound of a whiffle ball being hit by a whiffle bat. Reeeal plastic-y. These sound like things Jack Handey would say.

Geez. Reminds me of back in the day when radio broadcasters for baseball did not travel with the team. They used the pitch-by-pitch news feed to improvise. The "crack of the bat" would be something simple like a pencil striking a block of wood. I think that this is returning (more below). As for the proposed fake bat sound: for the majors, I think the player gets to choose, just as they choose their walk up music. Let them choose any sound they like that lasts less than one second, and it can be anything. A cash register (cha-ching), a dog bark, baby cry, car door slam, water drop, breaking glass, toilet flush, crinkling paper, their wife's voice, the Road Runner's "meep meep". It would be fantastic. =============== A lot of sports on television use remote broadcasts. Maybe all the talking heads, sometimes just one of them. They get the video feed from the local source, and then start yammering. It's not horrible. During the dark days of the pandemic and the only live baseball was from Korea, the broadcasters entertained us starting at 5 am from the comfort of their own homes. For the first time in a long time, I listened to a radio broadcast of a baseball game in my car. I had a long drive, and I saw that the Cubs were playing. So, I fired up TuneIn on my phone and streamed the audio through my car stereo. It wasn't the happy experience I desired. The play-by-play was littered was ads proclaiming that every moment was being brought to you by a sponsor. The first occurrence was when the broadcaster described the colors of the uniforms. "The Cubs are wearing their road blues with white letters and blue caps. The (home team, I don't recall) are wearing maroon with white letters. These colors where brought to you by Dutch Boy Paint." That drew a nasty obscenity from me, but it never stopped. Every moment in the game had a sponsor, and it really took away from the atmosphere. To the point of this mini-thread, this radio broadcast used the same noise for every pitch, regardless of the outcome. "On a 1-1 count, here's the pitch (clack) that misses for a ball. Here's the 2-1 pitch (clack) and a swing and a miss. And the pitch (clack) he drills it deep into left center and off the wall..." With today's technology, he could have a cheap sound board with a "thump" for a pitch hitting the catcher's glove, the standard crack for solid contact, and maybe something softer for a foul ball or weak grounder. (Or, the custom, personalized sound.) I lasted about 2 innings before going back to music.

And thats only 1 example.......... Changing gears.............. I would like to have tacked this onto the old "Investment in clean energy" thread, but that got woefully hijacked, so I'm sticking it here just by default. It's deep, weighty, and complicated, not to mention long, and is sorta a very sketchy road map of all the places this new Inflation Reduction Act could possibly lead, in the realm of energy production and pollution abatement(s). If one is unfamiliar with all these issues, it can provide some significant background. It's *almost* apolitical, mostly delving into the different ways the carbon capture 'games' could play out - thus more an economics (with a side of chemistry) outlook. This act **could** be the first real blow struck in turning around the current mad dash towards unsustainable higher global temperatures. It paints a picture of the vast variety of possible solutions and pathways forward. There will undoubtedly be dismal failures (which of course will be isolated and ridiculed), but, hopefully...............actual successful technologies will emerge and be proven. Another way to think of this is that it gives license to big energy, and innovative start-ups, to figure out what works and what doesn't (in terms of sending that "bad air from China" back, or at least mitigating it). This will require some chewing, for those concerned enough to try and absorb most of it. Really a well-written article. Will be interesting to look back in 10-20 years to see the winners and losers emerge from all these ideas.

Ye olde bismuth, element #83 in the periodic chart, is the element with the highest atomic number (or mass) thought/presumed to be completely stable, radioactivity-wise. Meaning it wasn't radioactive; it didn't perform internal alchemy on itself and become something intrinsically different. However............less than 20 years ago, it was discovered, after much work, that it was actually, technically radioactive. Yes, that's the same bismuth that's in our Pepto-BISmol. The reason this was discovered is because scientists were looking for it, because it's atomic structure should cause that to happen. (Too complicated to 'splain.) Well, the reason it was so hard to discern is because it has a very long half-life. Like a VERY long half-life. Like an extremely absurd, almost unfathomable half-life. Like longer than the understood age of the universe - maybe as much as a billion times longer. So on the order of 10^19 years. That's the longest-half life of any element that decays by alpha decay - which sloooooooowly turns it into Thallium. So you're pretty safe slugging down your Pepto - except the subsalicylate part can cause problems for some folks. In fact, the human body as a whole is more radioactive than that bismuth is. [An isotope of both Xenon and Tellurium (and maybe 1 or 2 more - not sure) have even longer half-lives, but maybe 'only' a hundred or thousand times longer, but they go off via beta decay.] So where does this bismuth come from, other than the earth? Well.........since it's a pretty heavy element, it *had* to be made in the interior of stars - that loooong ago blew up in some fashion. Far and away the most common (and stable) isotope of bismuth is bismuth-209. It's what's known as a "primordial nuclide", which means it was around before the planet earth - or even our sun. Formed under really extreme processes in the centers of red giants (and probably supernovae, too, but that's debatable), i.e. well after all the hydrogen has fused and so even iron (normally the heaviest atoms formed in 'regular' fusion) then begins to be squeezed into larger atoms. So the bismuth atoms in that Pepto were formed in the centers of really huge stars. I think that's just fascinating. Of course the same could be said for gold, silver, lead, etc., as well. As a sidebar........concerning primordial nuclides........argon makes up ~1% of earth's atmosphere. Some of that is primordial, mostly argon-36, which also was created in the centers of stars. But most of it is actually from the radioactive decay of an isotope of potassium (therefore not primordial). That decay is very slow, too, so no worries there, but I just think that's an interesting factoid. This little chemistry/astrophysics lesson brought to y'all by little ol' me. πŸ™‚πŸŒŒβ˜’
