I drank this stuff back in the day enjoying liberty in Cartagena, Espana...I had to try it: beer? At 12 percent alcoholic content...whew, the booze burned the back of one's throat upon drinking...not good, but, halfway there to a solid buzz drinking merely one beer (for my then tender liver)...French beer, not Spanish, I suspected...

These eyeglasses may be even better than I suspected...wearing them at a distance of approx. nine feet from the television, I pulled up the Snellen chart from my YouTube app and read all the lines, all the down! I don't wear them for computer usage, they're a bit too strong for anything under five feet distance, but... Wait a minute, I need to sit six meters distance from the chart, not a mere three...

Pater Max entered Haifa University in Israel at age 13(!) - to study astronomy. He wanted to become an astronomer. He later spent time in Rome and Paris, before moving to NY, spending years studying art. But clearly his fascination with stars, planets, etc. greatly influenced his creative output.

Best youtube comment ever: krrrruptidsoless 2 years ago (edited) This has got to be the finest, highest quality most preserved piece of music in the history of mankind. And it's playing through my phone. Unbelievable really. Doesn't sound anything like it's coming through a tin box with a bunch of loose wires screws and panels under a desk in a noisy shop with a hangover... Sounds nothing like that at all. doesn't sound anything like it's coming through a 1-in blown speaker with a crack in a pickup on a washboard dirt road blasting am music at full volume with a bad signal... Sounds nothing like that..... Almost though

When I get a few grand mad money in my pocket I'll go get a pair of mono tube amps (15W or so) with a fabulous tube preamp with excellent phono section, so I can start to spin the black circle, with an outstanding cartridge and stylus...speakers too, undecided regarding those, though...

A worthy endeavor, altho a complicated one. Don't short yourself on the cartridge and stylus - but 'sounds' like you've got a bead on things. IMO, the tube amps are overkill, but I won't argue with anyone who thinks otherwise. Don't know if anyone is making 4-ohm speakers these days, but consider that if you see any available. Speakers may be the hardest thing to decide on, 'cause so much is personal preference, and you need to be able to A/B them.

TN: I really really would want tube amplification, though...I recall a fellow I knew back in University days who had it: such an utterly mellifluous sound with fine fidelity, and noise levels very very near zero! I recall the harmonics giving aural enjoyment unfelt before...(as I lay back enjoying Bach and Strauss, particularly)...

Ok, no argument then. I had friends who did that, and were happy with them - altho replacing tubes is certainly a hassle. One of my profs was HUGE into it, and had about 3 McIntosh amps that he dearly loved and was proud of. When he passed away several years ago, I kept thinking I should approach his wife about them, but never did. Then *she* died about a year ago, leaving only his (somewhat) autistic son. Kinda suspect they got disposed of somewhere along the way. They do give a warm, rich tone. And can sure push the power. I know they (McIntosh) got sold some years back, I think(?) to one of the Japanese cos., and have no familiarity with the 'modern' stuff.

The audiophiles in my circle of friends all prefer tube-based electronics. They are heavier and more fragile but the quality is higher. Solid state stuff continues to improve, so maybe someday. I am grateful that I don't have the ear to hear the difference.

Oh, yes, I agree. Altho I was around a few (true) audiophiles, I never went full-on into it, mostly for financial reasons at the time. But I sure appreciated that degree of investment. And heavily researched my audio purchases, driving considerable distances a few times for hearing different speakers. I may have related the story once before of two friends who would buy an album, play it once whilst recording it to a high-level reel-to-reel tape, and then put the album back in it's sleeve, likely for years. That's IF the record itself had minimal pops and cracks. If not, then back to the store it went for a (hopefully) better replacement. And boy, did they have a system to enjoy their tunes. Wow. I did that, too (returning bad pressings), but was a bit less extreme about it. At some point in the mid-(?) (late?) '70s, there was a period where the vinyl most companies used was *really* bad, and they knew it, but just kept putting them out. To the extent that smaller labels would sometimes tout their better vinyl. I put Soundguard on most of my albums for years (before first play), and I'm convinced that has helped protect them. And most of my vinyl still has the plastic wrap around the sleeve (slit for the removal of the albums themselves, of course). Think I tried Last, too, but liked Soundguard the best. And yes, I know there are those out there who frown on such applications. I also use Soundguard with a special brush to occasional clean my stylus (as recommended). I'm at 'that point in life' where I've been considering selling my collection en masse, but am not 'there' yet.

Klepp, my son is an audiophile of the first order. He has built his own amps and is a serious student of the subject. His playback equipment is top end, but he never bought any of it new. He never drives by a thrift store without going in to browse their electronics. Walking through his home (where the music never stops playing during waking hours) is a gift even to my untrained ear. By the way, if you start getting more serious about selling off your vinly collection, give a heads up. I can connect you with some serious buyers.

I assume, Buzz, the comment about selling vinyl was directed at me, not Klepp, right? Assuming so......ok. Will definitely remember that. But your buyers may not be into blues, reggae, bluegrass, and old-time (which collectively represent probably only ~~20% of mine - depending on definitions. My holdings are quite eclectic, not surprisingly.

Your son is doing what I should have been doing for years now: doing nuts and bolts electronics work in one's own lab, soldering, playing with the O-scope and the frequency generator, possibly even devising one's own amplifier stages--but at the very least following, amending, improving(?) rather complex schematics...and other such stuff I used to love playing around at back when I was an Electronics Tech 3rd class, floating around the Med, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Caribbean Sea...no Baltic Ops though, where I'd have loved liberty, I'm sure...

Hate to think along these lines, Buzz............but I probably need to set up a mechanism, a contingency plan..........like I've already done for my sports card collection. It gave me great relief to get that lined up. Sigh. There are a couple-three options around here, but they don't give me the greatest confidence. I'd like them to ultimately go, whether individually or collectively, to someone(s) who would fully appreciate and respect them, which I'm sure you can grasp.
