Fast forwarding a few decades to today:

As often happens during holidays with family, I saw a couple of movies in the theater this past week. First up was Gladiator II. It was certainly a cinematic wonder, but the plot left a bit to be desired. Strong acting by just about the entire cast. 

Next up was Wicked. I saw the musical in NYC, and it was awesome. The movie version also was spectacular. I'm not always a fan of musicals, but this one was so good. Ariana Grande was surprisingly good in all aspects -- a singing version of a Mean Girl at magic school. 

Escape from Alcatraz is a rarity: a non-violent prison film.

Holy G*d! One of the greatest directors of all time has passed...DAVID LYNCH.

*Mulholland Drive* is one of the 100 greatest films ever made (and I know what I'm talking about).

Of course *Elephant Man* is also nearly peerless.

Of course in the old days I enjoyed the B&W version in subtitled Italian.

This was also a clever 80's comedy, IMO..."Weekend At Biden's"...

"Arthur" I think was the original romcom with the cutest couple. I kept a line from it all these years. "We'll eat cheap disgusting food."

I have been watching various makes of “A Christmas Carol”. A version that was CGI with Jim Carrey was not great. All the effort went into the CGI and very little to the flow of the story. 

A 2019 version from Great Britain is a multiple part series. It puts a focus and interesting re-interpretation of segments of the story. This one is really good! 

"WHEN WE WERE KINGS" currently airing on Story channel...saw its premiere, superb...

I saw its premiere at the student union for free...attended by ~100.

As a kid I cheered when Larry Holmes beat Ali (1979, I think).

Above was sort of unwatchable, but Gone Girl is on SYFY tonight and tomorrow.

(Mature Yvette was super-hot, though...

With elevated volume and closed captioning following Lincoln, as closely as one can.

(Its superiority surely also stems from being faithful docudrama).

Abe Lincoln, Vampire Killer was easier to follow.
