I assumed Snowguy would just jump on that since he said he was gonna stick around for a while.  Guess another "post and run" appearance.  I believe the rules here allow that for posters emeritus cases....

That all said............additional items of possible interest concerning that Pirate trivia individual are:

His father was an orchestra leader; he was all-state in football in addition to baseball.  Eventually got a degree in Economics from Purdue.  Had a son who became a PGA golfer, and was a 3-time delegate to the RNC.  Pretty interesting stuff.

Wow - that's an even *better* guess.  No, but can't get any closer and miss it - I don't think.  They *were* on the same team for a few years - but not nearly as many years as the mystery pair.  But mostly John was in the AL too many years to have surrendered all that many gopher balls to Hank.  Man, you're really plowing the fields.  Admirable diligence.

Nope.  Cuellar was mostly an AL hurler.  You were *much* closer with your previous guess - and use that crumb as a hint 😉.

Nope.  Gibbon wasn't a teammate of Marichal very long.  And he has no W.S. decisions either way.

Extra hint:  the 'name' player was a tad older, and was on this team more years.  But they were teammates for several years.

Maybe a 'decent' guess, but Fryman never played in a W.S.

Edit:  neither did Bunning, on further thought and double-checking.

And of course you may pose a question without knowing the answer.  Peeps do it all the time.  This ain't no contest; just entertainment, and learning historical knowledge.  Denny has not (yet) resumed payouts. 😂

I'm not sure how far back it's been determined in MLB history (or other leagues), but: which pitchers have ever thrown a PERFECT INNING (i.e., NINE PITCHES resulting in THREE STRIKEOUTS?

I certainly don't know the answer to that, but it's quite a few.  Read a week or two ago of one incident, but don't remember who, or the details.  May have been in a W.S. or A-S game, which is why I remembered it - but do NOT quote me on that.

Yes, there have been 2-pitch innings in professional baseball, made possible by MLB's extra-inning automatic runner rule. Pitchers can end a frame in just two pitches if the first batter hits into a double play and the next batter gets out on a single pitch.
Major League Baseball recorded its first 2-pitch inning on August 16, 2025. Houston Astros relief pitcher Enyel De Los Santos accomplished the rare feat in the eleventh inning against the Baltimore Orioles. It began with a first-pitch flyout that allowed the automatic runner to advance, followed by a line drive to the second baseman who threw to third to double off the runner, ending the inning.

.TN gives the side-eye to that silly automatic runner rule.

I'll just throw this out there as a trivia factoid, not a question.  Since you mentioned Don Sutton above............     He came up as a rookie in '66, and won 12 games.  More impressively, he won AT LEAST 11 games for THE NEXT 17 YEARS STRAIGHT!! 😳

Don Drysdale gave up a homer to Daryl Spencer, I think.

Ok, now to that follow-up question.  Orel Hershiser famously topped Drysdale's consecutive scoreless innings streak back in '88 (that Drysdale record was what was referred to in one of my clues above - and was done in "The Year of the Pitcher" ('68)).  (59 > 58.)  So whose record did Drysdale beat?

Part two of the follow-up:  Mariano Rivera holds the postseason record with 33.3.  The second-longest is still Whitey Ford's 33 - and that one's still a W.S. record.  (Possibly never to be broken??)  So whose record (which would have been W.S. by default) did Ford beat?

It's 33 1/3.

It indeed was a choice, and a close call.  The former was easier, and I don't like the fact that fractions are *very* hard to do in the 'normal' style on computers.  In this case, pickiness not really an issue.  No foul on the play.

Grover Cleveland is wrong, but you're "in the vicinity".

This is most certainly a great place for peculiarities in written scores such as innings completed. On that Mariano Rivera stat above for example, its often written as not just 331/3 or 33.3,but 33.1,strangely enough. If Rivera had gone an extra out its 33.2 and if he wouldve gone one more out its just 34. Guess you can call it "baseball language".

Grover Cleveland was a horse.  6 years he had over 30 CGs - 4 of them consecutively.  'Course that was back "when men were men".......
