That organization, seems to me, are virtually always in "buy" or "sell" mode - to the extent of having blinders on concerning where their *current* status is. Yeah, *that* year, '72, the Phils were BAAAD. They only won 59 total, and no other pitcher won more than 7 games , OR even was above .500 W-L. So that was the first of Lefty's four Cy Youngs. And how did Philly get Carlton?? By getting him from Busch's Cardinals for the aforementioned Rick Wise.
So..............back to the unanswered question of what was so remarkable about Wise's no-no that he threw against the Reds in '71. Well, only 4 guys in ML history have hit a HR whilst twirling a no-no. Wes Ferrell (1931), Jim Tobin (1944), Earl Wilson (1962), and then Rick Wise (1971). Pretty rare event. BUT WAIT - it's even crazier than that! HE HIT TWO that game! WHILE SUFFERING FROM THE FLU!! And he was only 1 walk away from a perfecto game. So unless baseball regains its sanity and gets rid of the DH, it'll never happen again. Yet more to follow..................
Addendum: When I was researching that '72 Wise and Carlton season earlier, I hypothesized that perhaps Carlton's 27/59 might be the modern record for 1 pitcher winning the highest percentage of a team's games. Sure 'nuf................

TN, you know the rules...mercy ending to any lopsided game...seems seventh or later leads of twelve or greater maybe a "mercy" rule (SOLELY at loser's request, OF COURSE) make sense...albeit a tad disrespectful to those who slog through the 17-2 games?

No, don't know "those rules" - for MLB. "It ain't over 'til the Fat Lady sings", and all that. I think it's ok for LL games, or high school, even - or at most *maybe* small college ball. I'm betting 98% of MLBers would be against such a 'rule'. One doesn't get to that level by "giving up". I agree with the sentiment, but no, I don't buy into that one. By that point in a career, a decent number of position players have done some pitching - as you likely know. And if they haven't cultivated 1 or 2 of those.................with the limited number of pitches a lot of guys throw, that's on management to 'solve' that situation. IMO. That's *one of* the beauties of baseball - the uncertainty of the outcome until that Fat Lady finally *does* sing. Impractical, yes, or at least arguable, but part of the 'beauty' of it - just like the occasional 17- or 22-inning game *used to* be.
Futbol and hockey suffer by comparison, with their shoot-outs. Again, IMO. I understand that philosophy, if one can call it that - but it's trying to make a round peg fit into a square hole.
I was rooting for the Mariners, too, but mostly because the Jays had already had a couple of turns. Toronto is a pretty cool place - altho maybe not as much as it once was. Seattle, too, tho, so no advantage there (pun of course intended). The sadness that was Sick's Stadium doomed that one *before* it ("the ball") got rolling.

But it's clear Gary Sanchez can pitch at times as well as his at times (<average) defense behind the plate...but wow! Vaughn's knuckler was impressive...in slo-mo replay I SAW ZERO BALL ROTATIONS!
I won't bother to 'game out' whatever MLB does from here on out. It almost doesn't matter to me since they've truly ruined a large part of the game for me. (And the players also deserve a good share of the blame, with the two "S's" - "strikes and steroids". There's now *at least* one whole generation, if not 1.5, who don't know what they're missing. Oh well............

I didn't realize Abbott had lost more than he's won. 21 games under water with a 'decent' WAR for how long he was in the game. But that '96 season *killed* his stats in that regard.
